Merged: Singletary Fired

29 posts in this topic

Singletary fired? Oh well, I am sure he will get a defensive coordinator job somewhere. maybe a Cowboys, or Broncos? Broncos D sucked since they let go of Mike Nolan.

Now Time for new GM to be hired and new HC. I won't be shocked to see Bill Parcells, yeah thats right BILL PARCELLS! Named GM for 49ers. Parcells can turn a team around not glory. he can build a team and 49ers already have some pieces, so its not like Parcells has nothing to work with. Plenty of good players and talent.

I'm wondering why they did this with one game left on the year? If I were the owner, and I knew I was going to fire him, I'd at least let him play out an essentially meaningless game versus the Cardinals - ala Brian Billick. Letting him go with a week left only puts the team in further disarray, let them have some semblance of normalcy.

I hate to see such a person as this get fired with just one week left to play in the regular season, but if it had to be done, then I shall have to live with it.

I actually had respect for "Samurai" Mike Singletary as a player and even as a coach. Maybe he will receive a new gig somewhere along the line - at least, I hope so.

It is pretty silly to fire him with one game left.
Perhaps they don't have to pay him for a full season, and they are just being cheap about it.
Similar rumors were floating around about McNabb and his contract.

This pretty much goes to show if you don't have a QB, you don't have a job.

I agree. While I'm not surprised about the firing I am surprised at the timing. Very odd to not let him just take the last game at this point.

Singletary is a good guy but there is really no defending him in this case; he deserved to be fired for his awful QB handling alone. I was going to make some comments about how it's worst than Cleveland's Quinn/Anderson fiasco and then I read this from John Clayton:

"Other than how Eric Mangini mismanaged Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson off the Cleveland Browns' roster, I don't think I've ever seen a worse job of managing quarterbacks than that done by the 49ers' Mike Singletary."

Sums it all up right there.

Couldn't agree more... he may be done as a HC, but he'll be a welcomed addition as a LB Coach or even possibly as a D-Coordinator.

Yep. Someone will take him as a DC, *cough Ravens Cough*. maybe someone might give him a Head Coaching Job but I agree with Brownsfan, how does he not improve the QB position, I mean sure it was great to get Taylor Mays but he passed on Jimmy Clausen... ok on second thought it would have made the QB situation even worse. I would say how he should have been kept with the condition that he drafts a QB in the 2011 Draft but I certainly understand it. The new coach will have some decent pieces in place and take over a good team, I mean Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Taylor Mays, and of course Troy Smith!

I agree! He's gotta be disappointed with how his career has gone so far.

While Singletary is proven as a defensive assistant, I don't know about being a defensive coordinator. Singletary seems more like a rah-rah guy than a true X's and O's man, even though Ray Lewis said he learned a lot from Singletary during his time as Ravens LB coach. Coordinators at the NFL level usually gain experience at the college level first because the pro game has a much more accelerated pace. There are very few coordinators, if any, who bypassed the apprenticeship of college to jump straight to the pro level and found success. While Jason Garrett comes to mind as a guy who skipped the college experience to call plays in the NFL, keep in mind that he spent most of his career on a sideline, essentially serving as an assistant offensive coordinator when he was the backup to Troy Aikman and others. Garrett's success is also tempered a bit by the struggles the Cowboys offense has had this season, stemming from chemistry issues in recent years.

My point is, Singletary can eventually be a good coach, but I doubt that he'll be a successful head coach, and I also doubt that he'll find success as a coordinator without getting the necessary experience at a lower level. It's like running before you walk.

49ers are looking for experienced GM.

I am calling it now....BILL PARCELLS! If anyone can turn 49ers back into a playoff and superbowl contending team it is Parcells.

Just think... Parcells will have a easier path with the 49ers since they have some good people in place all he needs is to get a Franchise QB and tweak the defense.

Apparently to add on to what Wacko said, the 49ers are looking for a GM and whoever that may be will have full control over who the new Head Coach will be.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/27/york-49ers-will-hire-g-m-to-hire-coach/
49ers team president Jed York isn’t wasting any time looking for a general manager. He’s already reached out to a few people.

“You can probably figure out some people we’ve talked to,” York said at his press conference Monday.

York said that the G.M. he hires will have full control to hire the next coach, although it sounds like York has an idea of what direction he’d like things to go.

“I wouldn’t say we are strictly looking at an offensive-minded head coach,” York said. “But we’ve had a lot of problems on the offensive side of the ball.”

The funny thing is, as Parcells started to gradually take a lesser role with the Dolphins, Miami began to struggle more and more. 2008 was the only season where Parcells was truly hands-on, before doing less and less last year, and then practically leaving the front office altogether this year.

Tony Sparano wasn't responsible for the Dolphins' brief turnaround -- it was Parcells all along.

Offensive minded coach. Brian Billick?
I was actually thinking about that. Billick can trace his NFL roots back to San Fran and is, despite his last year here, a good coach.

I'm biased because I love me some BB...

That would be the only problem... If San Fran gave the keys to Parcells and made him GM, how long would he be there? Would it be another Miami where it's Parcells who makes great selections in the draft and off-season and is hands on and than backs off as the years go on? San Fran better hope they get Parcells to at least a 5-10 year deal so that they won't have another Miami situation.

Yep.. I was thinking the same thing. First 2 Coaches who came to mind were Billick and Gary Kubiak.

The deal Parcells made with Miami was similar to a friends-with-benefits, no-strings-attached type deal, for lack of a better analogy. Parcells was able to have his fun and stay involved in football, but wasn't on the hook to do much beyond his basic responsibilities in the offseason. He only got as involved as he wanted, and chose to back off so he could enjoy his semi-retirement during the season.

The problem was that Miami didn't capitalize on the moves that Parcells made and couldn't maximize the potential of their players. That blame falls on the Dolphins coaching staff.

If Parcells flirts with the 49ers and agrees to take on the same capacity there as he did in Miami, San Francisco needs to bring in a competent enough coaching staff to manage the roster that Parcells will compile. They can't make the same mistakes as the Dolphins and fail to take full advantage of the luxury of Parcells in the front office, even with his hands-off approach.

If Ozzie on the market, would they go after him or Parcells? Don't ask me cuz you know who would I pick in a heartbeat.

I unfortunately complete disagree. I watched a Sound F/X on NFL Network a few weeks ago that had him and you can just see it.. he has the Wade Phillips mentality and besides the mighty and great Tony Dungy (heavy sarcasm) that just doesn't work as a coach. He's not tough enough and he doesn't demand excellence from his players. I also cannot see any GM hiring him after how he handled the QBs this year... I mean come on; he's going to pick one on a weekly basis? Absolute joke.

Just Read that Jim Harbaugh & Jon Gruden are early candidates to be the new 49ers Head Coach.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/28/harbaugh-gruden-mentioned-as-early-49ers-candidates/
Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News cites two sources that claim Jon Gruden and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh are atop York’s wish list for a potential coach.
Well I expect denials to come out from both Gruden and Jim Harbaugh about this but personally I think Mike Holmgren has Gruden on Speed Dial in Cleveland and will be ready to fire Mangini and bring in Gruden as the new head coach in Cleveland. Also I think Jim would be a better fit for the 49ers than Gruden.
