Reed Fined $10k For Hit on Brees

43 posts in this topic

[b]"OWINGS MILLS, Md.—Baltimore Ravens star free safety Ed Reed(notes) was fined $10,000 by the league office for roughing the passer, according to a league spokesman.

Reed hit New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees(notes) in the face with a forearm during a 30-24 win Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

"Specifically, on a pass play, he unnecessarily struck the quarterback in the head and neck area with his forearm," the league announced.

But no fine for the hit to the back of Flacco's head!?!!? The league has its favorites it takes care of and is wildly inconsistent. This is bs and so unfair what if Joe got hurt on that play? Would that be enough for the league to respond?

I haven't seen any new of the guy who hit Joe getting fined, maybe I missed it and this is just me overreacting.

The hit on Brees didn't look like a hit at all, to be honest. Brees sure didn't react to it.

Ravens VP of Public Relations Kevin Byrne already said that the Ravens have compiled video evidence comparing hits to Flacco that weren't flagged vs. hits to Bress/Manning/Brady that were flagged, asking for an explanation of each.

I have to agree with Suggs, they do baby a few select QBs and leave the rest to fend for themselves. It's a nice advantage they have, that's a big penalty in the midst of a game to get. When it's never called for guys like Joe it does a disservice to the entire team, their fans, and the rest of the league.

Great move. I doubt much will come of it but the inconsistent refereeing has just become laughable.

While I heavily disagree with the fine to Reed, Aaron Wilson has a point when he speculates that the reason the league didn't fine Will Smith for the hit on Flacco was because they couldn't determine whether the knee was intentional; upon watching the video again, I'm inclined to agree, although it seems as if penalty flags have been thrown regardless of intent in erring on the side of caution, so a flag should've been thrown in the case of Smith-to-Flacco if the same was done for Reed-to-Brees.

The first time I saw it I thought I flag should have been thrown, Joe was already tackled and was down on the ground, by the time Smith comes into the picture and knees him in the head its well after the play was made by the original defender. If that was Manning, Brady, or Brees the flags would be flying for sure. It's just a shame how inconsistent these refs are...Joe needs to be healthy for the playoffs, what if he was hurt? I would be outraged and the refs would need to be put in witness protection.

It shouldn't matter if it was intentional or not. It was still a blow to the head area of a NFL quarterback and in this case, even more so because he was defenseless lying on the ground. Smith should have been fined, no question!

Oh absolutely. The way that these roughing the passer calls have been made recently, intent doesn't really seem to be in the discussion. If it happens, it's called regardless. So it's baffling really that Will Smith wasn't penalized for that immediately. Now it's certainly arguable that if that was Brady, he would've gotten the call, but only because Brady would jump up and down screaming in front of the referee after the fact.

At this point, the NFL is just embarrassing itself. I pity those fools, and feel sorry for the players.

How can you enforce a rule that the players are confused about? Then, when the players admit as much, say there is nothing wrong with the way the rules have been communicated. Sounds like a typical arrogant organization if you ask me. The future for the NFL is looking as corrupt as ever, imo.

Question, Before Drew Brees became Drew Brees Super Bowl MVP was Peyton Manning & Tom Brady the only QBs who had special protection? I recall Drew Brees getting hit before and nothing, and now that he has a won Super Bowl he gets that protection? Guess we know what we have to do to get the flags for Joe.. win a Super Bowl and have Joe be MVP.

I can't remember Reed being flagged during the game, so part of me believes his fine is complete BS.

And according to NFL.com (LINK) of the 10 players fined, the Saints lineman who BLATANTLY kneed Flacco in the head hasn't been fined.

I understand fines for exceptionally dangerous or illegal moves, but the league has no sense of direction with them. Except for the favoritism it shows to the top QBs.

Fair enough. I'm more annoyed about the lack of fine for a deliberate foul by the lineman.

Ed Reed was flagged for his hit on Brees, 15 yard penalty for roughing the passer, plus the $10k fine he just got. While the guy who hit Flacco did not get a flag and appears to not be getting a fine either.

Seems fair to me. /sarcasm

I don't like it either. Bottom line, the team overcame the non-call and won.

What I'm really upset about is not only did the referees MISS the call during the game but even after the Ravens send the league tape of the hit, they STILL miss making the correct call and issue a penalty to this guy. Good grief, if the Ed Reed play got called this definitely should have. The Reed penalty wasn't that blatant, he just came in with his arms up to high and hit Drew's helmet...I'm more upset at the league, the refs do miss calls sometimes but there is no excuse for not fining this guy after the fact. It's on TAPE!!!!

I don't believe Will Smith did it deliberately, but it still should've been a flag. Theoretically, if they flagged Reed for a non-incidental hit, the same should have applied to Smith.

Come on now, you act as if you're surprised about this! It's no secret that a select few get the QB skirt rule. You really think Joe is on that list? If Ben isn't on that list you should know good and well Joe sure isn't on it.

Of course it's not right, but the NFL is not right either. There is nothing that will be done about this, and the Ravens can send the NFL videos till the cows come home, but that wont change a thing.

Joe gets hit late with no flag or fine being issued. Harbs and Flacco need to publicaly complain like Reid and Vick did so that more attention is brought to this situation. As a Ravens fan and a general fan of football, I'm tired of the golden boys of the NFL being overly protected and others are allowed to be slaughtered. If the league is so concerned about the integrity of the game, then thay need to address the offciating and the obvious advantage that is given to New England, Indianapolis and New Orleans just to name a few.

Reed didn't intentionally brush Brees but was still flagged and fined. You can not judge intent based on film. You can only judge intent by going inside the person's thoughts at the time the incident occured.
