Boldin Named Ravens Honoree For Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

18 posts in this topic

Per Mike Duffy's Twitter feed, Ravens WR Anquan Boldin is the Ravens' 2010 Walter Payton Man of the Year! (LINK)

The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is given annually to players who excel both on the field and off of it, rewarding players for their humanitarian efforts and volunteer work while maintaining a high level of performance in the NFL. Each of the NFL's 32 teams picks a local recipient, with the national award-winner voted by a panel of judges.

As a local winner, Boldin will receive $1,000 towards his charitable fund, the Anquan Boldin Foundation. The top three national finalists will receive an additional $5,000, with the top finalist receiving an additional $25,000 towards their charity. Congratulations to Anquan! Thanks for representing our Ravens and the city of Baltimore so admirably in being a quality person and a top-notch player!

EDIT: Boldin was actually named the Ravens' team honoree for the Man of the Year Award and is a finalist for the national award, to be given in January; both Mike Duffy and Aaron Wilson tweeted the breaking news, but sources have since clarified.

This award is only given to one player in the league, each season (discounting '06). That's a tremendous honor.

Good job, Anquan! The whole Ravens organization deserves credit - they do more charity work than most.

Huh, during the Saints game it said Derrick Mason was up for the award as well. That's interesting that they were both in the running.

Congratulations to Boldin, he surely deserves it!

On another note, has Ray ever won this award? I hear he does a lot of charity work in Baltimore, and he is of course excellent on the field.

Congratulations Q! You are worth so much more than what we traded for you. We got a beast of a WR, a leader on offense, and a class act citizen. It'll feel good to have some firepower in the playoffs with you leading the way along side Flacco and Rice. Let's get the championship I know you want

Different award. Mason's was for the Ed Block Courage award, I believe

He hasn't won the award yet. Duffy posted false information. The 3 finalists are not announced until January 2011...

EDIT: Change topic to Baltimore's nominee or something. You are jynxing the man!

I must say that Walter Payton was one of my favortie players to watch.

I remember having dinner with the percussion players from Santana and hearing of his passing. It was a Monday Night.

What a player he was.

I would say Ray Rice has some similarities to Walter Payton, but Ray reminds me more of Barry Sanders.
