Jamaal Charles

I owned Charles in fantasy last season and his history-making second half was absolutely amazing. What he's doing this season though has been even more impressive.

I just read this blog entry on The Fifth Down that breaks down where his YPC numbers rank this season and over the last three. Link

Peterson is still the best RB in the league but Charles has leapfrogged a number of guys in my opinion.

I knew he had that sort of average last year, but I figured it'd come down and it was just a fluke. Didn't realise he was still maintaining (and improving) it even with a bigger workload.

Not sure I'd still call AP the best back in the league either. I think Charles could make a more compelling case than AP.

Agreed with your first point.

I still consider AP the best because he runs people over inside and has the closing speed to finish long runs and go the distance. In addition he's had a really good season running behind a declining o-line and hasn't fumbled once.

I own him this year, and he's won me so many games. Could you honestly believe what the man would do if he averaged 20+ carries a game though? Can someone give me an answer as to why Jones gets the bulk of the carries?

The Chiefs fans also want to know why they don't have their best playmaker touching the ball more often. And I think a few are more than annoyed even despite them being on the brink of a division title. In fairness, Jones hasn't been bad though, just no where near as electric as Charles.

I kind of have an idea, but you can easily make a valid point to disprove it. The Chiefs like to give Jones the runs up the middle because Charles is a small guy, so they like to give Jamaal all of the sweeps and tosses to use his speed to get the edge. But he's proven multiple times this season that he can be that "between the tackles" kind of runner and take it up the gut when needed. So are they trying to lower his usage? But for what reason? Jones is the perfect compliment to Charles so it should be reversed, but God only knows what goes on in Haley's head.

Jones is averaging 3.0 yards per tote, while Jamaal has 6.4. Jones is good, don't get me wrong, but his stats are really inflated with how many goal line touches he gets. Charles should be the feature back in that offense, and like others have said, he could be the best back in the league if given some more opportunites.

I thought that Jones was averaging well over 3ypc. No wonder they're upset with Haley.

I think Haley simply doesn't want Charles to get hurt. Still, I'd line him up at WR more just give the D something else to think of.

I think we should come out with a similar package. Rice in the slot, Willis in the backfield, Boldin out wide, Mase out wide... The possibilities....

Cam actually calls a variant of that formation occasionally with Rice running a slant and almost always beating the LB covering him. I wish we saw it more in the red-zone though.

True, but not nearly enough considering the success rate.

could it be that charles is successful because he's got jones doing the bulk of the work and wearing down the defense. using charles as a change of pace back?

and hey they're winning games, if it ain't broke don't fix it

You guys have to remember that with more carries, the avg. generally declines. Granted, he's doing great things! Maybe they have question about his durability?

Yep. He's a burner. You give him 20+ carries a game, it won't be the same come the end of the season. You get a guy like Jones, who pounds the rock, gets defenses tired, then you strut out Charles who then takes advantages.

Thomas Jones pounds a defense, beating up on them and tiring them out. If you've had him running it at you 20+ times you'll likely lose a step or two as the game wears on which allows an explosive and talented Charles to take full advantage of any exhaustion.

That tends to be why all 1-2 punches at runningback are 1 big bruising back, 1 more finesse speed back.

I was happy to hear that Jamaal got that fat contract a couple of weeks ago. My fantasy league is a keeper league and he will definitely be my keeper.

Yep I think that's why they give it to Jones early and often.

I actually liked our running game better when we featured McClain. It really softened the defenses. I was sceptical of the concept of a powerful back 'softening' the defense before McClain's big year but I was a believe after that. I mean, Jones isn't the physical specimen that McClain is he runs with such tenacity so he tires them out more than bulldozes them like McClain did. His goal line truck on Woodley was one of my favourite plays that season.
