Walls Added to Secondary

Experienced cornerback Lenny Walls was added to a crowded Ravens secondary.by Mike Duffy

The Ravens added depth to a crowded secondary with the addition of cornerback Lenny Walls.

To make room for the seven-year veteran, defensive back Jamaine Winborne was released.

At 6-foot-4, 197 pounds, Walls has above-average size for a cornerback, but could add a punch to the nickel back position in a competition that includes Derrick Martin, Ronnie Prude, David Pittman and Corey Ivy, along with new additions Fabian Washington and Frank Walker.

Walls originally signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2002. He was on the path to a solid career, starting all 16 games during the 2003 campaign, but shoulder and groin injuries landed him on injured reserve the next two seasons.

Once we drafted two young guys in this draft with the potential that they have he became expendable, I think we are still trying to develop some of the young guys we have in the secondary while Winborne was more of a journeyman that was brought in for depth mainly.

This is upsetting, if anyone should have left it should have been Martin.... I liked winborne.

I think, of the two, Martin showed more potential towards the end of the season, despite being picked on in the games in which he started.

That's not a knock on Winborne's talent, it's just that he was a hybrid safety/corner, and one of the perceived pitfalls of being a hybrid player is being the "jack of all trades but the master of none."

Although you could argue that his versatility would've provided much needed depth at both safety AND cornerback, there's already enough cornerbacks on the roster with experience, and there's already at least half-a-dozen safeties on the roster right now. Frankly, depth or no depth, that's still a lot of defensive backs to carry before training camp.

Itll only be good for us in the end with whoever makes it. Everyone will have to play at their best all the time to keep their spot.
