Cam & Mattison

39 posts in this topic

This game Cam and Mattison both started off on the right foot.
The defense played 60 minutes of football. The offense played 60 minutes of football. Cam recognized the beefed up secondary and drop-back of the Saint linebackers which we exploited that with our run game. Mattison used hybrid version of this defense with Ngata picking up 3 blockers an letting outside linebacker run free on Drew Brees. One big thing I notice is that our young TE core is learning to block. Ed Dickson was lined up right next to Marshal Yanda, and Pitta on the other side. Cam took the blame for the issues we had before, this game was different many of those issues were corrected!

I admit that I for once saw the Ravens play like they should play for the first time in a long time...

That's pretty funny either way. Off topic, why is Ravenmore74 negged everytime he posts anything?
That's like asking why I get a plus sign every time I post; these things just can't be explained. lol.

That's because people recognize the voice of all Ravens knowledge when you post!

But true, much like the Bengals fall from grace this season. Or their flash in the pan season last season. Which ever way you choose to look at it.

We are playing the Bengals again and they are looking more and more miserable as the season goes along. I think that this year we split with the Bengals and win this second division game against them.

I just negged you for that, you've let the pluses go to your head, Franny. =P

I seriously doubt that Franny is our serial negger. We have a few posters who feel obligated to use up their daily allotment of negatives.

Maybe he believes by using all of his negatives, it'll ward off any negatives that may be thrown his way...

Getting back on topic, I just read this Sun article(link) on just how much more Mattison blitzed against the Saints. This excerpt says it all.
Defensive coordinator Greg Mattison tapped into his inner Rex Ryan against the Saints and the NFL's third-ranked pass attack, sending five or more players on 51 percent of New Orleans' pass plays. That's the Ravens' highest rate of blitzes since they went after Tom Brady 56.8 percent of the time two months ago.
The DBs aren't all-world but the CBs are play with confidence, Ed can still make plays and Landry is okay, so I'm hoping Mattison continues to dial up the blitzes.

I felt that to with the amount of time Greg Mattison's outside linebackers got through the Saints O-line. I was very impressed, it felt like Rex Ryan all over again!

I agree. I like seeing that pressure, which has been severely lacking this season. Brees had to hurry a lot of throws

I was surprised when Greg Mattison dialed up a Blitz with Ed Reed on the line he normally is a secondary lurking Bawl Hawk....

I was actually surprised to see it too. Ed is obviously playing hurt but Mattison should still send him on blitzes a bit more.

Rex Ryan never really used Ed Reed for sacking a QB. From what I understand as long as a nickle corner is there on the secondary to pick up the slack in this situation it was Chris Carr we should be fine with Blitzing...

Our corners have played pretty well by themselves on the outside these past few weeks, and they can really be helped by getting more pressure on the QB with the pass rush. The Ravens defense has a lot of guys who are excellent general athletes, and matching them up one-on-one will often yield a win for the defense. We just need to keep attacking to keep up with top QBs.

I remember years ago, back in this Defensive Play of the Year days, Ed played close to the LOS alot. Ed Reed was used like Troy P is now before the Steelers starting doing it. However when Rex took over in 05' Reed was better utilized being that full time ball hawk to baited QB into mistakes off that quick pressure.

I would love to see Reed back up near the LOS again, he'd been even more of a play maker and harder to account for.

I still remember the game @ Wash, when Ed had the sack, strip, fumble recovery, TD all in one play.

I don't think we'll see it too much this season, but if Ed Reed can come back 100% next season, i wouldn't be surprised at all to see Ed Reed playing up at the LOS a lot more.

Not every player is built with endurance to run the full length of the field like most of the special teamers and Ed Reed... I was sitting back in amazement when I saw the offensive lineman on the Pats do what 4-3 running guys can do on special teams...

I think Webb is the best man to man coverage guy we have in the secondary. Everyone else likes to play off the ball...

I'll agree that Webb is the best in man coverage but he plays off coverage most of the time like all Ravens CBs do.

In reality most CB's directly covering a WR should not play off the ball. Why do we have Safeties and dime and nickle packages? Those are the secondary players that should play off the man coverage...
