Ray Lewis' Pre-Game Ritual?

5 posts in this topic

Hey ya'll

I have a question about Ray Lewis' pre-game ritual.

The piece of sod that he throws down on the field, and then grabs a chunk of and eats.... does that have some significance? Is it sod from the practice fields???? I cant imagine as intense as Ray Lewis is it would just be any old sod.

Thanks

The actual type of grass itself does not have significance. The patch of grass that Ray grabs and sniffs is a reference to the Russell Crowe film Gladiator, which Ray says he watches prior to each game for inspiration. Specifically, it's a nod to where Russell Crowe's character will reach down and grab a handful of dirt and feel and sniff the dirt so as to become one with his environment before he battles.

Ray was torn between that ritual or decapitating one of the opposing team's players as a homage to Gladiator. He figured the sod was the more prudent, legal, and less against his religious beliefs.
