Baltimore Has The Most Veteran Team In The NFL

26 posts in this topic

Here is some midly interesting, but ultimately useless information from [s]Washington[/s] Landover:
Going into the 2010 season... the Redskins were the oldest team in the NFL.

The oldest 53-man roster [now] belongs to the Baltimore Ravens, who come in at 28.3. They are followed by the Vikings (28.2), Browns (28.0), Steelers (28.0), and Bears (27.9). The Redskins are tied with the Jets for sixth. The remainder of the ten oldest teams are a shade over a month older than the Redskins with the Saints, Chargers, and Seahawks all coming in with an average of 27.7 years old.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the NFL’s youngest team with a roster averaging 25.6 years old. Working up the list from there, the second-youngest team is the Panthers (26.2) with the Eagles (26.3), Jaguars (26.4), and Dolphins (26.4) rounding out the youngest five.
So what do you prefer: age and experience or youthful enthusiasm?

I would honestly prefer a mixture of young and old, With mainly 2-3 year veterans mixed in with some 7-9 year guys that are still able to play at a high level but can offer things that the newer guys are not accustomed to seeing.

Well considering the people who are old on our team, Mason, Lewis, Housh, Birk, I like having them because they are good at what they do, especially the 1st two. Some others though I would like to replace with younger guys, Gregg would be one of these, and at times so would Birk.

Veteran QB > Young QB. Not a knock on Joe, but a Veteran QB can make young receivers good. I thought Vet receivers could make a young QB look good but Cam isn't making that happen but thats a thread in itself.

Wish we were younger on the DL. That really killed us on Monday.

Funny how 3 of the top 4 are from the AFC North.

But in any case, we still have a good mix of youth and veteran experience imo. We have 2nd 3rd and 4th year guys playing major roles as well as 8+ year veterans.

Do you guys think the 2.7 year difference from youngest to oldest make that big of a difference?
I think the Texans 4th quarter is a definitive YES!

I don't. The presence of guys of like Gregg, Birk, Ray, Mason inflates the number somewhat. The good news is that the Ravens have a good number of key players on both sides of the ball under 30.

You're also forgetting that we have young parts in key places. Joe, Rice, McClain isn't old, the offensive line except for Birk is young-ish. Aside of David Reed, Dickson and Pitta, we have little youth in the receivers. But that's most of the offense there which I would say is young.

Defensive front is where I believe we need to keep infusing youth, so that in a couple of years, when Ray's retired, Gregg, Redding and JJ are gone, we have Cody, Kruger, Ngata, Kindle and one or two other bright sparks.

We were in the mid 27s at the beginning (or maybe offseason, can't remember) of this season.. Who did we sign/release?

I know Pryce probably had a big impact in de-aging our team, he was an oldie. I'm just brainstorming other players. Hmm.

When was that? I only remember this report going into training camp:
Excluding special teams players, Baltimore has the fifth-oldest roster in the NFL. They have the third-oldest team in the AFC, trailing division rivals Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

The Ravens’ average age as of this past weekend was 26.68 years old. That’s an increase from 26.45 last year.
No idea, honestly I think I made it up. I may have just done a tally, myself, of the starters on offense/defense.

I don't really think it's that big of a deal as people try to make it out to be in terms of having a young roster. I think you have to look at having a good mixture of veterans and rookies on a team which we do have. It really don't bother me if we have a young team or not... look at the bottom of who has the youngest and see what their success rate is compared to teams who have a mix of vets and youth. This doesn't mean anything....

exactly, may not b much of a factor erlier in the season, but now as we near the end and get into the playoffs, there will definatly b some show of old bones, too bad we didnt beat the steelers and have that propel us to a wicked record and i early bye with the ability to rest players with a game or 2 left as well, but oh well play the hand ur dealt or deal with the hand you played

its funny i saw a thread with a poll asking if ed reed was overrated?? hahaha i laughed at that and baffled that such a fan would even pose the question, ur sig stats prove that that notion is pretty ridiculous

I think it is a positive to have a veteran team as long as the offense can stay on the field lol. It's not a coincidence we are going to make the playoffs 3 years running.

I'm surprised about the Browns. They've been bad for so long I would have thought they would have a lot of young guys on their team to rebuild. Guess not.

A nice mixture of both.

In the case of many of the Ravens, age = experience and wisdom. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Todd Heap, Derrick Mason are all still very good at what they do. I don't think this is a bad thing - as long as our veterans still possess the same athleticism as they have in the past, which I think they do.

The vets on this team, specifically the four you mentioned are all great but none of them possess the athleticism they did in the past.

I still disagree. It speaks to how amazing all four of are they can still make plays and dominate in spurts but in terms of athleticism you can't compare Ray now to what he was in '97(just picked a random year).

Ray may have slowed down a little but those backs and receivers still feel him and look over their shoulders for him.
