Jarret Johnson

55 posts in this topic

It seems to me that the problem with our pass rush rests primarily on one man's shoulders: JJ.

He's been a workhorse for us in the past and he used to be that guy who was in the right place at the right time and didn't give up big plays, but now it seems like he's a step behind whenever the ball comes his way.

Watching him get totally burned to the outside by Foster yesterday and constantly picked by the Texans offensive schemes in the second half really hurt. Suggs was getting pressure so what did they do, roll right toward JJ. I'm really regretting that we bulked Kruger up right now... we NEED someone to seal that edge and Kruger doesn't have the quickness anymore due to the added size.

JJ, you've been good to us, but it's run its course... Why does it seem like we made all the right moves over the offseason but key injuries have left us totally exposed at those positions, i.e. Gaither, Foxworth, Kindle. Running game, Coverage on Elite Receivers, Pass Rush opposite Suggs... it's ridiculous.

Jarret Johnson is not the kind of guy who should be playing that many snaps. The reason he was playing so horribly was simple exhaustion on those longgggg drives. Did you see him get burned by Schaub on a scrambling play? That was ugly.

Hopefully Kindle could be the answer at OLB next year but we can't really rely on that. I say make Johnson into a two-down kind of LB and start giving more reps to Ayanbadejo, Gooden, and Ellerbe.

It's sad to say but I agree with you.

He has been the biggest under performer on the Defense all year. He doesn't get much pressure, is an average tackler that has below average speed and is bad in coverage.

What makes it worse is that we lost Kindle (whom I think we would be seeing a lot of at this point in the season due to Johnson's underperforming)and then we traded away Antwan Barnes who was good at getting pressure on the QB.

Yea... think Oz got greedy with Barnes.

I don't see how Ozzie "got greedy". The coaches didn't want him here and Ozzie got what he could for him. While I've seen Barnes make plays as a Charger, maybe the Ravens letting him go wasn't such a bad idea that the Eagles did the same after just a number of games.

Average tackler? He sucks. He always gets juked in the open field. He has incredible rushing and closing skills but when he gets there he falls flat on his face.
We have too many defenders that we rely on who cannot tackle. Compared to Belichick's defenders some of our guys wouldn't even be on the team. Mattison is trying to change that. He drafed Kruger because he is a very good tackler.

Well considering our defense was on the field for 40+ plays in the second half, how can you not expect them to get tired. This is where having Kindle would be helpful, along with Kruger, to rotate Johnson our every once in a while. The man was gassed.

Sometimes it is there own fault jumping off sides and lousy tackling extending the opponent's offensive play. UGH!!!

I've been saying this all year about JJ, maybe not making threads about it....This needs to be the last year he starts, I dont know we have to get someone else in here opposite Suggs that can get after the QB....Sergio Kindle or whoever

he isn;t a liability in the pass rush or anything. 2 possessions in a row for the texans were 95 yards and 99 yards. both like more than 10 plays. and then they had to try to stop the drive where they scored the game-tier. those guys were gassed.

i mean, jeez, Matt freakin Schaub outran JJ on that one play. those guys were all tired. thats why we only had a 3 man rush with 8 guys in coverage. we were perfectly fine with the pass rush in the 1st half and 3rd quarter.

I think JJ started off with a bad season, you could see he was trying but it just wasn't there. Then he had 2/3 games somewhat recently where it seemed to be coming around, especially in the pass rush. Yesterday was awful though. That play where he was just chugging along toward the sidelines was ugly Worst part was, then he had to chug across the other way to our sidelines to sub out, and he barely made it. But if he can do in the pass rush what I have seen in recent weeks, I would love to make him more of a strictly pass rushing guy. Him, Suggs, and Kruger who has been able to get pressure somewhat consistently lately, all coming at once. Throw in a combination of Redding, Webb, Gooden, Ngata and it causes problems.

Dear Mr. Kindle,

Please wear a helmet at all times next off-season. Your services next year would be greatly appreciated. I hope you're working hard and your recovery is going well.

Love,
Tom

also, I love seeing 'Ruki blitz from the nickelback spot... would like seeing more of that when only bringing the front three (+/- Suggs)

I'm tired of hearing about the defense was tired.... THEY couldn't stop the Texans...over and over again, the fatigue was brought on by their own doing. The Texans were 4-4 100 percent on 4th downs are you kidding me? JJ was a big part of the problem, he's already slow and has had a bad year...add on the amount of plays and he becomes a clown. BTW, the time of possesion was alomost EVEN over the course of the whole game....

This just frustrates me to no end... our FO made all the right moves and the football gods decided to frown on us.

Also, earlier when I mentioned JJ getting burned by Foster I was talking about when he got burned by SCHAUB which is even worse. And guess what, on the 2 point conversion it was JJ lying on the ground swiping at Schaub's feet... he actually saw Matt Schaub running, knew he couldn't catch him and dove... Matt. Freaking. Schaub.

JJ WHY??!!?!?!

We'll have to give him the Mike Myers SNL treatment. Give him a helmet with his name on it and a leash.

The Defense was tired because of the offense. 3 and outs are the worst thing for a defense to face. To get right back on field after only a few minutes rest.

Combine that with 4 man rush which equates to long plays and 1st downs in weakening coverage.

When the Defense was rested and energized they looked good.

Exactly how many opportunities did our offense have to control the clock in the 3rd quarter?

This whole 'defense was tired because of the offense' is the biggest crock I've heard since 'if the glove don't fit, you must acquit'.Maybe if they don't open the second half by giving up 90some yards, they wouldn't have been so tired the second time they gave up 90some yards.Get off it already people..it's just lame.

Exactly, I'm tired of people thinking the defense isn't the problem. IMO, theyve been more of a let down and costs us far more games this year then the offense has. Granted, statistically the D is better but they can't close out a game in the 4th quarter when we have a LEAD.

I take you back to the score just before 1/2 time... That wasn't in result of being tired or the offense NOT scoring. Also, the offense/special teams provided horrible Field position for the Texans and the defense repaid them by letting the Texans go the lenght of the field... or atleast FG's 5 times in a row.

Finally i have been saying this all year about Jarrett. You will eventually listen to the voice of reason. This guy kills the D because they have to pick up his slack. Nakumura same thing, Kelley Gregg same thing. Tavares Gooden also. We need to recognize when our players are playing bad ball and bring in players that are playing better. Where is Ellerbe? I don't give a crap if he doesn't know the plays anybody on this team can play linebacker better than Jarrett is playing right now. Except maybe Jason Phillips.

Several. It's not like when Houston put points on the board that they did an onside kick to get the ball back every time. They had plenty of opportunities for a NFL offense.

Voice of reason? A lot of people have noticed J.J.'s declining play this season.

The team has brought in players to replace the likes of J.J. and Gregg. Cody is at least a year away from being ready and we all know what happened to Kindle, who may have been starting over J.J. at this point. As for Haruki, he would not be seeing nearly as many snaps on D had Foxworth not gone down.

I agree with you to an extent about Ellerbe. He should be playing over Gooden but if he doesn't know the plays, he'd be a detriment to the team as well.

Ravens only had one offensive drive within the third quarter. That's not "plenty".
