A Question On #52

36 posts in this topic

Some questions Id like to ask... Just questions nonetheless..

Would Ray Lewis' jersey number be retired when he retires from the NFL? I mean would our team do that for him? Itd be cool though. Would it be the first LBs number to be retired?

they should do what the Cowboys do, and do the ring of honor thing. eventually if we retire enough numbers, they will run out and will have to re-issue retired ones. Personally, I've never been a big fan of retiring numbers!

Yea thats true about retired #s... But afterall he is the "GREATEST" MLB in all of the NFL. If you look at all his stats and acomplishments youd know why I would want it retired. But maybe if someone came to this team and used #52 it would probably make them better. Lets hope thats the case.

At least they should make something to show what he has ment to this organisation like writing his Name and his number somewhere in the stadium

im pretty sure that we will retire his number. he'll definitely go into the ring of honor, no doubt about it, but i'd still like it if we retired his number. he deserves it.

Well maybe they should ask him about retiring his #. Itd be cool if he didnt want it retired but just put his name and # somewhere in the stadium for all to see who owned it before. Also again.. Maybe whoever gets it will probably do great with Rays #. They wouldnt want to play crappy with that #. Atleast I wouldnt want to. I would hate myself for ever playing crappy with the #52 on the Ravens team.

Didnt Tavares Gooden wear #52 at Miami? He did pretty good with it.. Thats why Im hopin Tavares takes over for Ray and plays with the same intensity Ray plays with. Which is also why Im hopin Ray stays good enough to play for 2 more seasons. Just to mentor the Rookie to becoming great like Ray is.

Also the fact that hes from Miami. Wore the same number as Ray. Also being able to play with Ray in the season to come... How much better can that be for any LB coming out of Miami that also played with the #52?

i think they should retire his number if he finishes out his carear here as well as #75 these guys were special players hall of fame bound but most importantly the stuck with us from the begining(of the franchise) till the end which is rare in the free agency era B) didnt ray take a pay cut to stay here :o;)

We do have a ring of honor. I dont know that his number will ever officially be retired, some organizations dont retire numbers, our hasnt been around long enough to know whether we do or dont. However, I am fairly confident that, that number wont be issued to any incoming player for a while after he retires and it would probably only be issued in emergency situation.

without a doubt it should be retired. besides, its just ONE number. Come on, he's the face of the Raven's franchise

Im glad he will retire as a Raven.... Without him our team never would have made the top 10 LB core of the NFL.

Understood but you dont want to get into the habit of retiring the numbers of every face of the franchise that we ever have. If you retire Lewis's number then you probably should retire Ogden's number. You could argue that Reed might deserve it when its all said and done. My point is every time a great player comes through your organization you cant retire his number. I think unofficially retiring it, as in not issuing it outside of emergency situations, and putting him in the ring of honor would be enough. I think to retire someones number symbolizes that they were above the team and no one player is above the team. I dont think Ray would mind if we opted not to retire his number. He knows he's loved by the fans of Baltimore and Ravens organization.

I don't think his number will be retired (jersey-wise) but his name (and number) will surely grace our Ring of Honor :D

Yeah, when Ray goes the number goes.

Off hand I cant think of any player MORE deserving of such an honer.

Ogden doesnt deserve an honor like that? He's probably going to be our first HOFer. He's been here as long as Lewis and has had the same impact as Lewis. Lewis lead a record setting defense. Ogden came *this close* to anchoring a record setting offensive line, during J.Lew's 2000 yard season. Because of Ogden even when our running backs sucked we have a solid running game.

Yea. Ogden deserves to get the same thing Ray would get. Both of them were drafted the same year and were great players as well as anchors to their side of the ball.

Ultimately I prefer the ring of honor over retiring numbers but being that Ogden and Ray were our first 2 draft picks and both are going to be HOFers I think in this case it would be appropriate to retire their numbers

Well... As much as Id love to see the #s 52 and 75 retired. Id very much like to see them on the field during game days. See how well people that play in them perform. I personally think they would do better then what everyone expected out of them in college.

I think the number 52 should, and will, be retired when he retires. Ogden might deserve it, too, but, certainly not as much as Ray. They will both be in the Ring of Honor as well as the Hall of Fame, but the number 52 shouldn't be worn by any other Raven.

I'm kinda torn on the whole "retiring 52/75" thing, but in some ways I think it would be cool to have the defensive leaders of the Ravens D wear 52 would be cool to, so that you always know 52=dominating Ravens D

yes im sure when ray retires his # will be retired im not sure if the rasvens will ever reissue # 52 but i bet they wont untill they have to. ray has been the face of the ravens since they started so they might not ever re isssue that # .

Yup.. As long as anyone thats on the Ravens defense dominates with that number then Im okay with it. If they get the number and suck. Id say change their jersey number to a diff LB #... I wont mind if they do great with it just as long as they dont suck... Because Ray was the face of our defense and dominated with that #...
