If Rex Were Fired

Defensive performance does not necessarily correlate with offensive performance; otherwise, that wouldn't explain why the Ravens have consistently ranked in the top 3 in defense since 2000 despite having had a long history of anemic offenses that couldn't hang onto the ball to save their lives. The Ravens have always played defense in spite of their offense and produced results. I understand that time of possession plays into the fatigue factor, among other things, but that doesn't explain why Rex Ryan's defenses had given up opening-drive points or points on consecutive drives early in the game, when fatigue factors very little. Furthermore, giving up late-game points in tight games takes blame off the offense for the defense's performance if the offense had done its job up to that point.
The Ravens defense has been great for well over a decade because they don't play Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, etc; and other elite quarterbacks for 16 games a year. A lot of times they beat up on weaker opponents and that helps to pad stats. The Steelers have also been historically owned by Tom Brady as he has a field day against them statistically and comes off with big victories. Does this mean Dick LeBeau has bad schemes and defense against elite QBs? Nope, because his resume speaks for himself, and I say the same for Ryan and Mattison. Ryan gets owned by Manning, LeBeau gets owned by Brady. They're both great defensive coordinators either way.

Again, my point remains that Rex Ryan's defenses fail against Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, and that is precisely the type of debate I was attempting to engage that you understandably don't have time for right now; most of my research had been done beforehand and was pulled from prior debates I had about this. The overall team's success and final scores notwithstanding, when it boils down to those two QBs against his defenses on the field, those particular QBs have a field day.

I would say agree to disagree at this point since our stances remain firm despite the numerous posts.

I would have a rebuttal, but I need to submit an essay and grab lunch, so yes, we'll have agree to disagree for now. Good points raised, though.

I need to study myself but I can't resist a well versed argument with intelligible responses.

True, why can't we let Joe do that?
Because Joe isn't allowed to let go of Cam Cameron's hand.

If Rex Ryan and the Jets continue to roll downhill and Rex is fired for one reason or another, would you want him to come back as DC and would HE even want to come back?

Personally, I love Rex.
While I do like Rex, he isn't going to get fired....his team has 3 losses. 1 very big loss, 1 shut out and a 1 pt loss to the Ravens.

Good god people, why do we need 50 threads on "Should this guy replace Cam and Greg"? We're not replacing anyone.
No one is getting let go this season but someone could certainly be fired in the off-season.

I think Rex's mouth has ruined any chance that he would ever come back to the Ravens organization. We don't need that kind of loud mouth, all talk around here...I don't want anyone on our team talking like they won the superbowl before training camp even starts.

Rex wont be fired anyway, and if he is in the next couple of years he wont be coming back, people just move on much like Mike Nolan and Marvin Lewis.

No. Good DC or not, he does not fit our "image". He's a loud-mouthed, foul-mouthed, arrogant human being.
Jees harsh, you forgot honest.

You must've had a lot of pet peeves when Rex was our DC.

People forget, Rex in his best year, 2006, he had a younger Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, a more motivated Suggs (He wasn't motived last year, but he is now), A younger Trevor Pryce, younger Kelly Gregg, Haloti Ngata, AD, younger C-Mac, healthy Samari Rolle, and a young, healty Ed Reed. Most of these guys were pro bowlers still in or just out of their prime. Our corners, especially, are mostly young and inexperienced, and nobody we have is as good as C-Mac and Rolle were. Draft a few top defensive backs, and I bet Mattison will look better as D-Coordinator.

Yes, and to rephrase it, he had a secondary with players that he could leave on an island, which was why his blitz schemes were successful. There's no such thing as Washington Island, or Webb Island, or Wilson Island, and if they do exist they are somewhere in Bermuda's Triangle

Not only that but I live in the NY tri-state...and all the Jets ever wanted was to start taking some of that shine away from the Giants...and every since he's been there all NY has been talking about is the Jets..Jets organization aren't giving that up anytime soon.
Very true. I live in Connecticut so I know plenty of Jets fans and they all seem to love Rex.

Also, why would Rex be fired any time soon when his team made the AFC Championship game in his first season as their coach and they're currently 9-3 this season? Give me a break...

Oh, and Mattison has already proved to be a worthy replacement. His defense doesn't have the flashiness of a Ryan defense, but it gets the job done for the most part. We always seem to be in the game with Mattison as DC and we don't get blown out. The same can't be said for when Ryan was here (Colts anyone?).
