One Issue With Pass Rush That Continues To Kill Us

16 posts in this topic

Our players seem to be in need of a re-reading of an old childrens fable called "The Tortoise and the Hare". You guys should all know what I'm talking about...slow and steady wins the race.

How many times have you guys seen one of our players come unblocked, but because he thinks its better to run 150 MPH at the QB all it takes is one sidestep by the QB for an easy sack to be avoided?

Chris Carr and Suggs were both guilty of this during the game. Carrs helped setup Pittsburg in the redzone although we held them to 3 on that series.

I wish our guys would take it down just one notch. Stay in control of your body so when the QB makes a move you can move with him.

Last I checked, we gave up no TD's until the offense turned it over in there red-zone.

The defense played lights out. Just like always, the offense lost us the game.

I think you're refering to Nakamura....He's the one that missed Ben on the 3rd and 11 throw to the 2...

I'm not going to call out Suggs for missing Ben once(or even twice) considering everything else he did throughout the game.

Wasn't it Nakamura who failed to contain Ben which led to a big completion near the goal-line?

Regardless, I felt the pass rush was relatively strong last night and pretty low on the totem pole of issues.

im sick of us sending the house on 3rd down but i thought the defense played well last nite. Mattison needs to stick with sending 4 instead of 3 or the house tho.

Yeah it was. When its your job to outside contain and you just totally whiff on Big Ben, not even a admirable attempt, its a shame. Naka did not have a good game yesterday. He also had that defensive holding call when we just stripped Big Ben of the football.

True. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming this loss on the defense or the aforementioned plays. Nevertheless, it is frustrating to watch.

But I know similar plays have cost of games before because they occured on game tying/winning drives by Big Ben in the past.

Not that I'm attacking you but fans crucify Mattison when he doesn't blitz.

Agreed. Him holding Miller was just moronic. The guy is twice your size and you're having trouble sticking with him? Ridiculous...

Love it.....first, "blitz more!!" Now, "don't send the house!!"
[/quote]
Yeah I agree. Mattison is blamed no matter what he does. Personally, I liked how he mixed it up this game. I just wish when a player comes free at the QB he at least reaches out and gives him a pat on the back or something.

Ya that annoyed me. When I saw him come at full speed towards Ben I was like, yep he's going to miss it. He needs to learn with Ben to slow it down alittle and contain him a bit. Been is too mobile for that.

His holding call was a killer as well.

I hear u about them complaining but what i have been noticing is that we send a strong blitz on 3rd downs that ends up getting burned alot. Im not saying that Matty hasnt done a good job because he has but still he needs to be careful because hes become predicticable. Then again what do i know im just a fan.

Mattison's gameplan was beyond solid last night...and whoever the poster who said the stunts and twists we started doing are useless is a clown (ya I said it)...giving up 6 points all game long, then finally giving up a TD when the drive starts on your on 10 is about as tough as nails as it gets. Suggs' missed sack on the TD drive was a result of him trying to bail out the offense, and frankly I dont blame him, we needed a turnover Pittsburgh was going for a TD that drive no matter what.

The game plan was great. People wanted more blitzes. We brought those and we disguised them. The game plan was stellar. The tackling and individual coverage were the issues. Which is hardly the fault of any game plan.
