Flacco Calling His Own Plays This Season?

33 posts in this topic

These are actually 2 serious, football related questions to the fans. Some obviously believe that Joe Flacco should be calling the plays for the offense, not Cam.

1. I am curious to understand..... What would the Ravens win/loss record be if he called the plays for the season "ala" Peyton?

2. Should Cam let Flacco call the playes against Pittsburgh this week?

This is a quantitative question, not qualitative, so essays or proof is not required. Just numbers. Won/Loss? Just your opinion is ok.

It's funny because you mention no facts or proof are needed, yet it's impossible to answer this question since it has never happened in the history of the earth.

You are seriously asking what the Ravens record, as an entire team, would be, simply because Flacco hypothetically can call some of his own plays?
That's like me asking if you would feel any different about humanity if the sky were red.

C'mon now...

10-0; yes.

Seriously though, if im not mistaken, didn't Harbaugh say that Flacco could call and audible at the line if he wanted and has actually done it more times than seen because it is like a one word term that they use to decide what they do?

I have no idea. I understand your question. I also understand that any question is probably in need of some facts. There really is no way to tell what we'd be if Joe called everything himself, but there's also no reason to think that Joe hasn't been calling some stuff on his own. After all, Joe did call off some plays a couple games ago.

There was an announcer a couple games ago, can't recall which, but he said Joe has been given the ability to call his on plays and Joe said later in a presser that he has not been given that opportunity yet.

He calls some good audibles, whenever I hear him on NFL Sound FX he's making a new call at the LOS. Whatever, who cares. It's a purely speculative yet completely unrealistic question because Peyton is in a league of his own when it comes to quarterbacks. His studying of the game is unparalleled

Against TB Joe was calling some plays, he has a funky arm thing ala Manning, One of the one I noticed was a long pass completion.

You shouldn't even compare Joe to Peyton, not knocking either but like another fan said, these two QBs are on two totally different playing levels.

It also makes me crazy as well when Joe makes some dumb mistakes(NE game 3rd & 1 and he still ran the QB sneak) not to beat that dead carcass any more but Joe should of called time out or switched it up.

That should be all the reason not to compare the two, and yes I know this is not a thread about comparing the two QBS!. But you pretty much compared what one does over the other. :Giant:

Yeah, I don't think anyone thinks Joe should be calling the plays - that is to say, ALL of the plays. I'm pretty sure that NO ONE is so deluded as to think Joe and Peyton are on the same level; that sort of homerism is technically defined as clinical insanity. We just want him to be able to audible out of some calls, since occasionally Cam calls a play which is just objectively stupid.

Considering Flacco has only been in the pro game for 3 years and is not an offensive coordinator, I feel more comfortable with Cam Cameron who has been in the league for many years and IS an offensive coordinator calling the plays.

We would probably be 5-6 right now if Cameron relinquished all play calling and gave it to Flacco.

I think we probably would have won the NE game
You mean we wouldn't have just run the ball or throw short passes for almost the entire 2nd half and let the Pats mount a comeback?

lol ... I will never forgive Cam for that game. Flacco was torching those chumps all game long, then Cam decides to shut it down. What a jerk.

I don't know what was going on but in the 1st quarter of the Tampa Bay game, I heard Joe screaming his head off while at the LOS. We were at or around the 35. Does he sometimes call plays or make audibles?

What I think happens, and what I think I heard happens, is that Cam calls a few plays and Flacco basically goes to the line, reads the D, and calls the play.
Either that or if Joe wants to check out of a play, he has a few other plays he can call, basically an audible.

But, Joe has said that he has not yet been able to make calls.

That is when he was doing the arm movements I've never seen him do, the closest it looked to me was "Chicken Dance'

Flacco doesnt have the experience to call plays like Peyton does. That said he does make changes/audibles depending on what he sees.

I really think that Flacco's maturity and understanding of this offense would definitely allow him to be able to make his own decisions at the LOS. There's been several plays this year where he stares down a WR because that's his first read. If he would be able to audible, you can probably save some of those INT's from the Cincy game and throughout the course of the season, enabling us to have won that game, which would put us at 9-2. In the NE game, if Flacco were able to audibile, you can take away some of those check downs to Ray, perhaps letting him throw against a young Patriots D, hopefully letting us maintain that 10 point lead we had going in the fourth. So then you're looking at 10-1. The Falcons game was not Flacco's fault.

When fans (like me) want Joe to be allowed to change a play, I don't think it's on the level of Peyton and how he does it. I just want him to be able to read a defense, try and decide if it's man or zone, see who's coming, who's not, and adjust to the situation. I haven't seen that this season, or in Flacco's career. I still do not know why he's not allowed to do so, but hopefully that will change soon. As for your second question, yes, I do think that Cam should call some plays if necessary. You sink or swim with your franchise QB, and I know I'll always have his back. Just give the guy a little freedom.

I say no to Flacco calling plays. At times he seems to be way behind on plays. If he was seeing things more clearly and i felt assured that he could recognize what the defense is doing i would be all for it. He still seems slow, stiff and very green at times like he is lost. Folks compare him to Big Ben but he does not even feel pressure and takes more sacks then he should. Like he is wearing cement shoes. He has a great arm but this is why he will be just an average QB. He has no true pocket sense and cannot avoid sacks and to be anything above average you need to be able to feel the pressure and extend plays not just stand there.

... if the way Joe Flacco is playing is "average", I will take that every day of the week.
