What's Up With Kelly Gregg?

27 posts in this topic

For whatever reason buddy lee isnt playing football like he has in years past, he used to be a rock nobody could move and he always made the tackles. This year he is getting pushed around, the tackles are down, his overall play just isnt where it used to be.

He played good last year, I dont remember hearing him dealing with any injuries...maybe he isnt getting the same amount of playing time?

I still like him and what he has done for the organization...

He is getting up there in age, but still figure he should be solid for a few more years, but probably some nagging injury we don't know about.

Gregg has dealt with injuries the past few years. From mircofracture surgery on his knee in '08 to playing with partially torn labrum in his shoulder all of last year then having surgery this past off-season. In addition to getting older, his body wearing down has obviously affected his game.

He's been a good player for this team for a long time but it may be time to part ways this off-season.

Or its the shoulder and knee surgeries we do know about....

He used to be so disruptive, now he just gets blown off the line. Cody is not ready to take over so it just leaves Ngata to rotate at NT on a couple plays.

I agree with this.

Its age. Happens to the best of them.

Unless your name is Ray Lewis.

That is the only problem I would have with getting rid of Gregg next year, Cody is not ready yet, in fact he won't be ready until his 3rd year, if we are lucky maybe mid-season next year.

How do you know though? Whatever happens, I'd rather the team live and die with a young player who can improve than an aging veteran clearly on the decline.

To be fair to Cody he played really well in both the Dolphins game and the Falcons game. Well enough to earn the start in the Panthers game.

He didn't have his best game vs the Panters, as he was pretty much directly responsible for the long run play. However i'll be playing close attention to him in the Bucs game to see how well he can improve from a game to game basis.

If Cody continues to work and learn exactly what it is the Ravens expect of him, i could easily see him taking over the Starting NT position by the begining of next year.

Gee I wonder why his play is lacking?!?! Could it be because he has been a pro since 1999, been with us since our super bowl season, and ever since he has been a starter with us he takes a beating. Not to mention his injuries he has had to deal with, and the surgeries to go along with them. Good lord every body is not RAY LEWIS, and can keep their body in as great shape as he has for this many years! Kellys body is more than likely ready to be done with professional football, he has been great for this team and done a hell of a job at his position. Not knocking him but if Cody wont "be ready" for how ever long people think, Ozzie needs to address this because it's blatantly obvious this defense can't stop the run like the use to!

As much as I love Gregg I think he might be done.

I think he is done, too. I think the Ravens let him go in the offseason.

Why are so many questioning that Cody would be ready to take over at NT next year? There's still plenty of football left in this year for him to get his reps in the rotation and continue to learn. Just because he will be entering his second year will mean nothing, its the amount of improvement he makes and he has already been pretty solid as of late. If you need to see a young defensive tackle already playing well you need look no further than our opponent this week and Gerald McCoy if you think Cody "wont be ready" to start next year if neccessary. I'm not guaranteeing anything, I know as much as the rest of you. It just seems ridiculous that people are making coaching assumptions on young players.

Yeah, KG has had a step back this season, no doubt in my mind. But I also see in KG, a guy who has gotten more out of his ability than any other player ever to play in the NFL.

KG was not a high draft pick and nobody even expected him to ever be a NFL starter. KG has nothing to be ashamed of and has had a tremdnous NFL career. 6 feet nose tackle? When has that ever been done? I would love to see KG as a d-line coach some day.

KG has slid back, true, but he should be proud of his career accomplishments. At least I am.

That's my feeling as well, Gregg gave us everything he had, I'm very grateful for it but if he is no longer the best man for the job then we must move on.

It's the part of the business no one likes but it's REAL, and if we want to compete year in, year out and have a dominant defense against the run, pass we have to replace the weak links.

they should just put ngata at NT full time
[/quote]

To me, that'd be a waste. He's too athletic a d-lineman to be asked to simply take up two blockers.

true ... but i think he'd be the best option out of who we have now until we got another NT or DE

He just might be the best option but I'd rather the NT, be it Gregg or Cody, getting blocked out of a play and hope Ngata can beat his man to make a play than hope Redding or someone else can make a play with Ngata getting double teamed.

I'd like to see Cody out there next to Ngata more, but at this point in his development I don't know if the coaches think he's ready for that big of a task. He was getting chop blocked and not making enough plays in the Carolina game to get the majority of snaps over Gregg.

As I stated before Cody didn't have his best game in Carolina, but he was down right dominate at time against both MIA and ATL.

I only saw Cody get cut once in the Panthers game, and that was on the 45 yard run. However after that he played decent. His play wasn't as good as the previous two weeks but decent. Outside of that 45 yard run and 2 other runs in garbage time, the Ravens allowed 58 yards on 19 carries. That's like 3.2 ypc and that's not bad.

so.....you're saying if we eliminate their three best plays on the ground out of 22 attempts (which is what, like 13% or so of their attempts) then we did a good job? Wish games worked liked that ... We could pick three plays of our choice and have them erased; that would be sweet.
