I only listen to the old stuff. The new stuff goes against everything I believe in and I refuse to support it. Even some of the "underground stuff" is becoming to "commercial".

I dislike a good portion of the underground, only because certain underground artists preach too much about how mainstream is garbage (which it IS), that they have nothing else to talk about. Almost as if they think they're "too good" to go mainstream, when some of them know that they'd sign a contract in a heartbeat if it mean financial security for the rest of their lives.

Note that I didn't say this applies to ALL underground artists. I'm just saying that the amount of hypocrisy that exists in mainstream rap doesn't escape the underground; snobbiness is universal.

To be honest, I still listen to some mainstream rap, but only certain artists catch my ear. Kanye West, Jay-Z, T.I., UGK, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire (older stuff), Nas, Common, DMX, The Clipse, some Lupe Fiasco, even Rick Ross and 50 Cent...basically nothing that insults my intelligence TOO much.

I could do without acts like D4L, Dem Franchize Boyz, Hurricane Chris, DJ Khalid's entire operation, Fat Joe, Lil' Wayne (yes, I really HATE him), etc.

But, this is all a moot point since I listen to mainly R&B, anyway.

I like lil' Wayne, but He's only good on collabs. If he does something on his own it's usually crap (see: lolipop). And you're right, he does throw in some RANDOM lyrics. Check this out off 'the sky is the limit' :

And when I was 5, my favorite movie was The Gremlins

Aint got **** to do with this, but I just thought that I should mention,

this is immediately after saying he made drugs in his kitchen, just so you can put it into context.

I could do without acts like ... DJ Khalid's entire operation,

DJ Khaled is seriously the biggest joke ever. That song 'I'm so hood', is the greatest embarassement to mankind, ever. Particularly that little intro bit.

EVERY DJ Khaled song is an embarassment to mankind. Same with every DJ Khaled INTRO, period.

He just needs to stop talking...and stop claiming credits for songs that he did NOTHING on except talk...like, I don't get how he can release albums under his name, and he didn't produce nor write a single song. He just has connections and gets friends to rap and produce tracks for him to take credit for.

He's the reason why a lot of people have a hard time respecting rap music coming out of Miami, outside of Pitbull and Trick Daddy and Rick Ross.

DJ Khaled is a joke.. you've got that right.. I forgot to mention this earlier, but someone pointed out Immortal Technique.. He isnt bad at all, I've got some Immortal Technique on my iTunes.. Anyone heard of Masta Ace? Check out "Acknowledge" and "Ghetto Like" by Masta Ace.. Crazy beats with Ace..

Immortal Technique is talented, but doesn't interest me.

I know he's a political rapper and it's fine that he's socially-conscious, but sometimes, when I listen to him, I always wonder if he can ever lighten up.

That doesn't mean I wanna hear him start making pop songs for the radio and whatnot. But his albums are almost a chore for me to listen to because the music is secondary to the lyricism, and although there's usually nothing wrong with that, it becomes an issue when you just wanna listen to MUSIC, period.

Plus, some of his tracks run a bit too long (7 minutes? C'mon), and he's far too militant for my taste in some of his subject matter.

I prefer a balance, sorta like classic Nas or Pharoahe Monch or a more aggressive Common.

And yes, I've listened to Masta Ace. He's not bad, and the only album I've heard of his ("A Long Hot Summer") was one of the better-produced underground albums I've heard. "Beautiful" is still one of my favorite beats from 2004.

I agree there.. I Know I Can by Nas might have the best beat i've ever heard.. I've listened to Pharoahe Monch, but i've got to look more into him.. And i love Common's lyricism.. Hes one of the best lyricists..

No Army of the Pharaohs fans here? :(

check out www.undergroundhiphop.com

D.I.T.C for the older crowd that knows about hip hop

Buckshot & 9th wonder are hot

Brand Nubian - classic group

KRS-ONE - great great great live performer

This list could get to long so I'll just stop there.

2 me it's about lyrics and skills not catchy hooks and hott beats. you can gets better production if you don't have it so i don't knock artists that sucky beats, but if you don't have lyrical skillz then you just don't have skillz so i respect lyrical artists

9th Wonder is one of my favorite producers. Shame that he's no longer with Little Brother.

Brand Nubian, I definitely respect. Same with KRS-ONE, though he's gotten too preachy about the importance of knowledge and education lately. But, knowledge IS part of his name, so it's kinda obvious.

To me, it's not that I place more importance on either production or lyricism over the other. It's moreso the balance of the two that I can appreciate. At the end of the day, music is MUSIC, and I want to be entertained when I'm in the mood just to be entertained, and I want a message when I go looking for one, y'know?

That's why I can't get into artists that have too much of one over the other ALL THE TIME. That's why I appreciate the versatility and balance of mainstream artists like Nas and Jay-Z and 2Pac.

Of course, those are the cliched, carbon-copy favorites that everyone mentions. But for good reason. I mean, you'd be hard-pressed to name many more mainstream artists today that have had the same balance throughout their careers that those three (and a few others) have demonstrated.

I agree with all you said I just try to tell younger kids to have an appreciation for verbal skills because other than jazz music pure hip-hop not rap is the most creative beautiful music when their heart and soul is poured into it.

By the way where are the Kool G. Rap fans? One of the best lyricists s of all time

yeah I do like common but you can definitely see him getting more commercial.

My favourite common song was 'the people', But I'm not a huge fan of his really new stuff.

My favourite rapper period is dizzie rascal. You guys probably haven't heard of him because he's english. Also you might not like him, his music is kind of an acquired taste.

I thought Common's last album was great. But, I see what you mean in him getting more commercial.

Meanwhile, yes, I've heard of Dizzee Rascal. I remember him back when "Fix Up, Look Sharp," came out a few years ago. I really like his track with UGK, "Where's Da G's."

Lupe had apparently came to my college two years earlier, and I never heard about it...this was before he had just started to blow up, mind you...

But my college has had some decent rappers perform...50 Cent (right after his debut album charted, as a warm-up to the Roc The Mic tour), Ludacris, Common, Rick Ross more recently (as a special guest to the headliner, *shudder* T-Pain)...

I'm anxiously waiting for T.I. (possibly) and maybe some more R&B singers...I missed out on Musiq Soulchild with NE-YO as his opening act last year (ARGH!)...

freestyle is my favorite form of rap. I remember going to the playgrounds and getting in cyphers and we would go on for hours. B)
