Medical Question

Okay, so I drilled my finger yesterday. Not too bad, but I'm questioning my treatment of it. I cleaned it and filled the hole with neosporin and threw a bandaid on it. I'm about to do this again but my finger is white (as in waterlogged). This has always puzzled me, but should you not allow it to breathe for a bit before putting more crap on it and bandaging it again?

I know it may seem dumb, but since it's not bleeding I'm leaning towards airing it out. Thank you.

Has the hole closed, meaning clotted entirely?

I assume so, so air that bad boy out

Duct tape it.

I ain't no mom, but I am one clumsy dude. If the wound has closed it you can let it air out for a little bit especially if its white and waterlogged. But once it gets dry you should probably cover it for a bit longer (depending on how bad it is).

Electrical tape is good too. Clumsy is probably a word I should have used in my original post. lol.

Good, I'm glad someone agrees with me about airing it out. Just seems to make sense, but no one's ever said to do that.

Ward, what a bad day! Your QB gets whacked in the face, and you drill your finger? At least they won [/quote]

But I finally finished my shed! haha

First I would take the screw out. Then I would add some sort of a wax to the hole. Third, get the drill back and do it right this time! A human finger is a great appendage to any shed. I have mine for a door handle. Go ahead and guess what happens when you pull it.

lmao. I didn't screw it, I..... well, actually it WAS a broken #2 screw bit. It was with my high torque power drill too since my cordless battery had died.

How about a mom and a nurse? Wash it with soap and water everyday and keep it covered with neosporin. Monitor of signs and symptoms of infection, increased redness, swelling, tenderness and foul smelling drainage. If you notice a red line going up the are get to the ER asap.

I was hoping you'd respond, thank you. I washed it with soap AND hit it with peroxide (which hurt like all get out). So you don't agree to air it out then?

Reapplying neosporin now....

2 schools of thought on that -- you can introduce more bacteria by leaving it open and on a puncture wound if it scabs over you can actually have it not heal correctly, seal in bacteria and now you have an abscess. The second is keep it covered with antibiotic cream/ointment. Ease up on the amount of neosporin if you have pruned fingers also buy a bandaid that 'breathes' I swear by anything by Nexcare, mostly because they are latex free and I'm allergic. You want the wound to heal from the bottom up so it heals properly.
Unless you are covered in garbage taking the bandaid off to shower is fine and letting it dry well after that will help the pruning too.

The greatest bandage EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do automotive collision repair, if I dont get three new cuts a week I must be on vacation.

Neosporin and bandages are the trick but I alternate between dry and with neosporin. This minimises the overly moist condition you speak of. Usually I leave the wound dry at night and add the neosporin during the day.

Also make sure your teantus is up to date.

Good idea. I'll do that tonight, thanks. I just got the shot a few weeks ago for having scratched my cornea.

Ha, I've had more broken bones than cuts, so they're not my forte. Although, the burn from the airbag last month was nasty and I covered that bad boy for a week.

I only break things that you can't do anything about, like clavicles and toes.

Had an air bag burn once too. Those are incredibly annoying. SLOW DOWN! haha

Yeah, wife was thrilled AND I never did find the battery cover to the blackberry when everything was thrown around in the car. Gotta love electrical tape....

They did let me take off my Boldin jeresy, though. My jeans didn't fare the same...(why they cut off your clothes when you're able to talk, walk and basically act completely normal is beyond me)

Aw geez man, you gotta be careful with phones. I heard they can give ya cancer...

1/28/01's thought process:
"Ahh, I never get good reception on this thing! If only there was some way to get INTO the telephone line..."

I wonder if they'd let you take off say a Hines Ward jersey if you were a Steelers fan?

Yea, I never got that either. Last time I was in the ER was in a robe and boxer briefs anyway.

The adrenaline rush and shock can make you walk around even if you are critically injured--I've seen someone walk on a broken femur after an accident.
