Lateralling

Does anyone know what Ed's Lateralling percentage is? It seems like he does it on atleast half of his picks but in reality it's probably alot less. I wonder how it stacks up with other laterallers? I can't think of any other players that do it consistently.
Also Sunday is why I've never been super critical of Ed lateralling. It's a little bit risky but it does get us yards and big plays. And it sure looks great on a highlight reel when he pulls it off.

Ed is a special player, let's diagnose the chain of events that lead to that touchdown from his INT.

1. Ed reads the play perfectly, makes a break on the ball as St. Pierre is releasing it and he's in perfect position for the pick.
2. Ed catches the ball. Most DB's don't have nearly the hands that he does, how many times this year have we seen a Ravens DB get both hands on a ball but are unable to come down with it? Ed's hands are better than some WR's in the league.
3. Ed returns the ball- A lot of guys don't know what to do once they DO catch the ball so they most of the time just run right into a pack of O-lineman and go down. Not Ed. He immediately saw the entire play developing and starting calling for blocks downfield so he could cut back to the middle..probably equally as impressive as what he did next.
4. Ed saw landry coming from behind with an open lane to the end zone so he makes an absolutely perfect toss back to him (landry didn't have to even break stride or change direction)

True, there are times when Ed has gambled, and lost the ball. But those are few compared to the many times he has done something special with it. When he does that, it's not because he's trying to make a bad play, or not thinking but quite the opposite. When Ed gets the ball, he's looking to score and if he can't then he's looking to give the ball to someone who can. What he does isn't taught, it's instinctive.

Ed needs to make those plays since our offense cant seem to be consistent. I mean only 2 touchdowns against that abysmal Carolina defense?

It seems that every time Ed laterals it, we typically get more yardage (5 yards or more) and potentially the pick six just like Sunday.

Colts last year, reg season.

I thought Garcon hit him from behind and he fumbled during that game.

When the defense is getting int's and putting the offense in good field position, they seem to do nothing with it. Ed Reed, keep doing what you are doing because it is "Totally Awesome!".

your right, it was a fumble beacuse he wasnt protecting the ball. Instead of going down and giving the O great field position.

That was in the play-offs.

During the regular season, he tried to lateral a ball as he was going down on a punt return. If we want to boil it down to one play that cost the Ravens that game though, it was Joe's INT.

Ha, anyone see Lewis running up the left side of Ed asking for the lateral before Ed cut back into the middle of the field?

I could of swore we lost because of the ability not to score at the Colts 1 yard line...

Just thought I'd mention that Ed is currently tied for first in interceptions in the AFC with 4. He's 3rd in return yards. And that's after playing 2/5 the games everyone else has. Looks like yet another Pro Bowl year for Ed Reed.

Go Ed!

A few years ago, he may have given that to Ray Ray... thankfully he got his own a few seconds later :)

My heart skips a beat every time he laterals it out of the fear that it'll go wrong, but Ed Reed is a smart player. He's definitely proven himself to be the league's best safety once again by averaging an INT per game he's started this season.

I'd like to know why it seems that either Ed Reed (and lately, Ray Lewis) that are so pick-savy? I suppose we can chalk it up to veteran prowess, but attacking the ball should be an on-going occurrence. Didn't this happen in the game against Buffalo; and again with the same two guys? I don't care if you're across the field, if you can seize an opportunity to snatch a pick... GO FOR IT!

It's as if everyone else is just watching the game, they may as well be playing strapped in mobile Lazyboys, or better yet, Hoverounds. Other players are down-right asleep (Wilson w/a sneeze). somebody pass this number off to him... 800-769-3042 (see if we can get him a custom-made, Ravens Hoveround)!

I contribute it to excessive film study. If they know the play before the ball is even snapped, good chance they put themselves in position to get a pick.

In reality the Raven defense put up 14 points and that is how it should be...

That's a nice stance on lateralling.......

So true! Plus can you really put a loss on a fumble of a int? I say no! Ed Reed makes big time plays and I could careless what he does with the ball after a int. He has the mind set of when I get that ball in my hands we must score any way, any how and after seeing what our offense has been doing with the ball after getting it in the red zone, can you really blame Reed for wanting to score? No!

Hell, I remember going to the Browns vs Ravens game in 2004, the first game we wore all black. I was sitting in the end-zone in row 3 or 4, here I witnessed Ed Reed intercept the ball in the end-zone. Now he could have just taken a knee which is what I wanted him to do but instead all he saw was a bunch of slow offensive linemen before him and he decided to end that game with a 104-107 int return for a TD. He is a special guy, he has earned the right to play that way!

This must be the first time I've seen Reed lateral when there wasn't the imminent threat of a tackle, or when he wasn't lateraling whilst being tackled. But seriously, Landry shouldn't have gotten in, because that lineman had a good angle for the tackle. Actually, most of the Carolina team was so deflated the whole game, it made the game so boring.

Ed is going to do what Ed is going to do!! Harbs or any coach on that sideline can tell Ed to be careful or not do it, even Steve could say something to him and Ed will still do what his instinct is! What are they going to do, bench him lol? It's in his nature to make plays, not just pick it off and fall down. He proved again yesterday why he is a ball hawk and great play maker!

Do you really expect Reed to cover up the ball every time he's running downfield at full speed? really?
