Merged: Flacco Progression Continues To Improve

99 posts in this topic

Joes mechanics appears to me to be progressing better and better each game this season. I know that Carolina is not a great team, but Joe consistently steped into the pocket, set his feet and delivered strikes downfield.

Being that the D is erratic (sometimes poor, other times sensational)Flacco is going to have to lead the team as far as it is going to go.

I understand that Cam let Joe call some of his own plays today. Thats a great sign. Maybe Joe has MVP quality after all.

First 300 yard game of the year, a 110+ QB rating, no turnovers (fumble was on Rice), a solid win on the road.. you can't really fault Flacco for his play this week or, really, since Week 2. Nothing but improvement from the big man, I like it.

Go Ravens!

The Panthers had the 5th best pass D coming into this game. So for Joe to throw 300 yards on that is great and shows great progression.

I'm so glad he's a Raven. Really, we harp on the negatives but don't truly appreciate the progression he's made since joining the team or flashes of brilliance he gives every week.

I kinda don't give QB's ALL the credit for wins, nor ALL the blame for losses. For example Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, but I don't think anyone would claim that he was an above average quarterback.

What I am alluding to is Joes personal qualities and development as a player inthe most demanding position on the field. I am also, and (unfairly) comparing him side by side to some of the best in the business.

The qualities of a GREAT NFL quarterback are beginning to develop. I am happy for him. IMO.

My favorite part of the game thread where was one guy said just after the Housh TD, 'Joe could've thrown that ball better,'. This, my friends is the Ravens fanbase. Even when Joe drops a pass into Housh's arms for the touchdown, somehow the throw could've been 'better'. I remember getting a lot of flack (no pun intended) for my thread about 'over criticism' or just plain negativity and this is the example I wish I'd had then when I originally posted. Just ridiculous. Joe isn't the best QB and he makes me mad sometimes. But overall, I feel darn lucky to have him on this team and hopefully leading us to our third playoff berth in as many years as he's been here, including his rookie (ROOKIE) year.

Man Flacco was getting people off of him today in the pocket and he seemed lightning fast in avoiding pressure. He has great agility for such a tall person.

ONTO TAMPA BAY!

Yeah I coulda sworn he was sacked on that one play where I think he ended up dumpin it off to Rice for a decent gain. He avoided pressure pretty well today, Im proud of da kid. Good job today Ravens!

Bulger would have 6,000 yards passing already this season! Give him the start!

Pile on Troy Smiths amazing performance today...

I agree, it's good to see him moving around more.
I see Joe constantly learning every game.
Seeing him move around a lot tells me he's allowing plays to develop, the only problem may be that the receivers aren't doing enough to get open.
Another nice thing was seeing him change the play at the line of scrimmage, and it working out.
One thing that was an issue was that Joe was looking for the, not sure if it was an intended screen or a possible drop off, but I saw that happening a lot today.
Carolina got a lot of pressure on Joe today and I don't feel like our O line did such a great job of protecting him.
But overall, Flacco is doing a great job, the rest of the offense needs to step up with him.

Some GREAT QBs have reputations as being smart (ex. Peyton Manning, Brady).
Some GREAT QBs are known to be mobile (Steve Young, Steve McNair).
Some GREAT QBs are known to be tough (Brett Favre, Kurt Warner).
Some GREAT QBs have strong throwing arms (Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers).
Some GREAT QBs have ALL OF THE ABOVE! (John Elway, Joe Montana).

But the ONE and ONLY ONE characteristic that ALL GREAT QBs possess is ACCURACY!

No QB to ever play the position in history has ever evolved into a great QB without ACCURACY.

EVERY game I have watched Joe play as a professional, he has overthrown badly or underthrown wide open recievers on at least a couple of occasions. And these throws have been at critical times in the games.

Now, I didnt watch every single snap today, but what I saw was a highly skilled and ACCURATE QB out there today. His throwing mechanics were solid. He gathered his feet under himself (not throwing off the back foot). He stepped forward - up into the pocket, rather than try to escape right or left. He drilled the ball in tight spaces when he had to, and he used a delicate touch when recievers needed time to clear defenders. He was even hitting recievers in full stride for christ sakes(Heap best game for yards after catch). I have never actually seen him put all of these mechanics together in one game.

And he did all of this with ACCURACY. Forget who won or lost - what I saw today was the making and growth of a QB with potential for GREATNESS. I predicted that by the end of the year Joe's progression will make him one of the very best in the league. Today, I saw what I was looking for - ACCURACY!

What? A top end QB in Baltimore? Yes, it's true...

Of course, Joe makes mistakes, he's not perfect. He sometimes will hold the ball too long and take an unnecessary sack instead of throwing it away. Things he will improve on in time, this is just his 3rd year!!!

Lets take a look at the stats from his '09 and so far this year.

2009-10 - QB Rating: 88.9 Completion %: 63.1% Yards: 3613 Y/A: 7.2 TDs: 21 INTs: 12
2010-11 - QB Rating: 92.1 Completion %: 62.4% YardsL 2433 Y/A: 7.4 TDs: 16 INTs: 7

He got off to a slow start but he has sure picked it up since week 3 on...He is the highest rated passer in the league during this time.

In all of 2009 Flacco had 10 games where he had a QB Rating of 80 or better, already this year he has 8. He had 6 games of 100 or better in '09, he has 5 this year. Flacco is starting to carry this team, you may think I'm crazy but it's true. Look no further than the Panther's game, the run game wasn't doing much of anything, it was on Flacco to throw the ball against the 5th rated pass defense. He did it without much trouble in the 1st half, then the defense shut the door in the 2nd.

I have no doubt Flacco's completion % will rise, the Bengals game really hurt his stats. 1 very important stat that is up this year is yards per attempt at 7.4. Whether we are throwing it deep or our WRs/RBs are making people miss, we are gaining more yards per attempt. Joe's touchdown to interception ratio is much better so far this year as well.

Overall Joe has become a top 10 QB already, or at least that is the case for fantasy footballers...haha, seriously though Flacco has taken the next step. He will make mistakes as he continues to grow as a passer but such is the case with many young players.

Today he was surely going to be sacked on a play, the defender had him squared up, both hands on Joe and he's falling to the ground, only Joe is breaking away, looks right, looks left, finds rice for a positive gain instead of what would have been a negative one.....nice one

Joe is an accurate QB, every QB throws a bad ball now and again dont fool yourself. Joe's completion percentage is getting better every year.

No offense but that post was pretty retarded, you talked about accuracy and included the alltime leader in interceptions.

You need to watch other games than just ravens games if youthink flacco is so horribly inaccuarate. Manning, brady, bress all overthrow and underthrow multiple times in every single game they play. Its not a flacco thing like you think. The difference with those guys is that they are setup to succeed in the passing game. Those teams send 4 and 5 guys down the field on every single play and have great offensive schemes. The ravens have a pretty bad offensive scheme and only ever send 2 recievers and todd heap down field. Occasianally they will send more but not often. Its actually pretty remarkable how well flacco is doing despite being handicapped by his offrnsive coordinator

Your joking right? Lemme start by saying this, if I was a bucs fan, i'd be happy to with freeman, and the way your team is headed. But dude... lets look at your wins

Cleveland (3-7)
Carolina (1-9) twice
SF (3-7)
Cin (2-8)
STL (4-6)
Arizona (3-7)

combined record of teams you've beat (16-44)

NOW lets look at the real teams you've faced

Pittsburgh ..... stomped you
Saints.......... stomped you
Atlanta......... win

Lets look at who we've beat

Jets....... (8-2)
Browns..... (3-7)
Pittsburgh. (7-3)
Denver..... (3-6)
Buffalo.... (2-8)
Miami...... (5-5)
Carolina... (1-9)
combined.................. (29-40)

who have we lost to? lets see.... 2 of the best teams in football, and a division rival..

lost to patriots by.... 3
lost to falcons by..... 5
lost to bengals by..... 5

fact is... the best team you've beat so far is STL with 4 wins...best team we've beat has 8 wins... second best team we've beat has 7 wins.

We'll see you all in a few days in our house, and see what happens

Agreed, his pocket awareness was better,he was moving his feet and threw some nice passes. I still blame the OL on 3rd and long situations, they can't keep a 3/4 man pass rush off Flacco.

Perhaps allowing Flacco to call plays will help boost his confidence as a leader. Flacco has ability, but not alot of confidence; the evidence is in his hesitation to take charge on the field, or his overreaction with some passing. He internalizes the mistakes, but doesn't always push to prove to himself that he can rise above them; the result being, the next mistake sends him spiraling even further down the drain. The coaching staff should let Flacco call his own plays more often.

That score Sunday should have been larger than it was. There were the fumbles (mental mistakes) which, for a moment there, I thought would be another situation where the Ravens came with a holiday gift for one of the weakest teams in the league (yeah, it's happened before). With all the tools at Flacco's disposal, this ride should be pimped-out by now. All that talk about it being too early for him is B.S.; or maybe somebody forgot to tell Matt Ryan that he shouldn't be taking charge of the offense this soon in his career as well!
