Interceptions Do Not Win Games?

18 posts in this topic

Today on 1057 the fan Bruce Cunningham said that interception's do not win games for you while discussing the ranking of the Raven's defense before and after the return of Ed Reed. I say they do win games for you when your defense is giving your offense extra possessions of the ball that turn into points for your team. They also can lose the game, have your QB throw up 2 or 3 int's and see if it helps you win or lose. When you are on the plus side of the turn over battle, your team is winning, just ask the Saint's. What do you think? :jedi:

Flacco - 4 picks, what happened? We lost to an inferior team. INT's (turnovers in general) play a HUGE role in wins/losses!

In 2 of our 3 losses we lost the TO battle. We also won the Buffalo game off a TO. That guy's logic is trash. We are a better team with ED back there, even though Ed admits he's still in training camp mode. We all know Ed takes chances sometimes. I expect the secondary to progress each week with him back there as the other dbs get used to his style.

Tell that to the Jets, they only have 5 interceptions on the season yet are 7-2. Sacks and interceptions are slightly overrated stats in the grand scheme of things, sure turnovers contribute to your chances of winning games but they only tell part of the story.

They are a part of the game that can't be ignored. Sometimes they matter, sometimes they don't. Stats can back up either side.

I think what Bruce was really hinting towards is since Reed has been back, our INTs have increased but our pass coverage has declined. Hence "Ints are nice, but they don't win you games".

True that is why it can depend on what the offense does with that turn over. Ed Reed last Int in the Buffalo game all the offense had to do was at the least was kick a FG and that game was pretty much over.

Agreed. A number of people on the station have taken that stance.

To me, it's lazy journalism. The pass D has declined since Ed's return because the Ravens are facing better QBs and WRs.

I haven't seen plays where Ed abandoned his duties to try and jump a route like in the past. Against Buffalo, he tried to help the CBs over the top but they were getting beat within the first second of the play.

interceptions=turnovers which gives the offense another chance to win the game. Without turnovers the Ravens would have gotten BLOWN OUT by the Bills.

And what does Ed Reed coming back have to do with Fabian Washington getting turned around again and again in the Bills game? Or Webb being too agressive at times letting him bite on pump fakes? Or the lack of pass rush combined with we faced better QBs than we did the first few games of the season? You cant just say "We were #1 without Ed Reed now our pass defense sucks because hes back" So many other factors involved.

Interceptions don't win games... but they certainly make it easier. There's no doubt in my mind we would've beaten Cincinatti if Flacco didn't throw 4 picks.

I agree with that and to just say int's do not win games is crazy to me.

I saw a couple years ago the Bills intercept Tony Romo 5 times and still lost. Interceptions dont win games, points do but interceptions help to score points.

Ask the DB for the browns, if picks win games. The guy had a pick against sanchez on the goal line and dropped the ball, and it led to a field goal, and in a game close every point counts. If he picks that the browns would've been up by 3 instead of tied. They may not flat out when games, but it does have affect on strategy.

would be interesting to hear what he is thinking after that game today. i know the interceptions didn“t win this game all alone but they were a huge factor to get the W!

interceptions are a factor no question but ultimately scoring the most points wins a game.

Shockingly simple.
