Jon Beason

Theres been some talk about who we could bring in to replace Ray Lewis ( by replace I mean stand in the spot where Ray Lewis stood and perform not as highly obviously but at a level considered high by most human beings). Jon Beason is signed through to 2011 I believe where he becomes a FA. Due to Carolina's poor showings this season, and major injuries, perhaps beason would like a change of scenery. Makes sense doesn't it, both Ray and Jon went to Miami they both wear 52 and they are both pro bowl calibre MLB's.

What do you think? (if the opportunity presented itself do you think he would fit in here?)

lol I like that line. I would absolutely love that move if it were done, Beason is about as close to a do everything MLB as you can be not named Willis under the age of 30. Beason would have to really not want to stay in Carolina for it to happen, and then Ozzie would have to go get him. But I wonder if any MLB wants to step in the path Lewis walked in Baltimore. I would condone the move however.

I wouldn't blame Beason for wanting to leave Carolina, and sure as heck wouldn't mind seeing him wearing a Ravens uni.I don't think anyone would object to bringing him here, and Oz and company would certainly try to lure him here, but it all depends on Beason and where he wants to be.

I would only want a guy that would want to step in the path of Ray Lewis. Anyone that is too worried about not performing high enough following in a guy like that's footsteps is going to be a huge disappointment. Of course we don't expect to just find another Ray out there, but I'd like a guy with talent that is ready for the challenge. Not saying Beason isn't...just sayin goi

Why not? Beason is fantastic linebacker (and a fellow U Alumni :P). If he wants out of Carolina, Baltimore would make a lot of sense for him, whether or not Ray's still here. The reason I say "whether or not Ray's still here" is because if this is a move Ozzie truly would like to make, 2011 would most likely (barring any sort of Franchise Tagging by Carolina) be the only chance the team would have to land him for quite a while.

A linebacker of his caliber (still young, three straight 100 plus tackle seasons, three straight seasons with a pick, seven career picks) would definitely be sought after and locked up for the foreseeable future. So unless there's any other huge holes on the team that need addressed (and depending upon the price, which I'm sure won't be cheap) Beason would be an opportunity that would be too good to pass up, especially looking at who we have behind Ray now. I'm not knocking McClain, Ellerbe, or Gooden. They're all very good role-players, but I'm sure most would agree that (as of right now) they're not the long-term answer for that starting spot in a Lewis-less Future.

LOL.. The line that made this thread "flame proof". Beside that i really wish you havent brought the topic up, or i haven't clicked on the topic because i'll probably have a hard time sleeping imagining our MLB spot getting locked up by a presence like Jon Beason. Sure tackler, hard hitter, instincts is all there, he is 25 years old and probably hasn't even peaked in performance. 1 season with Ray Lewis and we have a monster on our hands... DAMMIT....You got me all hyped up..... ^_^

I don't think he'd wear #52 in Baltimore. Maybe getting ahead of myself but in all likelihood I'd see them retiring that number.

It's hard to really judge his caliber of play at this point. Or, perhaps, I just really don't want to even think about when Ray retires :(

i like the idea, but do you think he'd be a good fit in the 3-4?
I do, he's quite fast, like young ray lewis, and I think he's very mature as well. It would be sweet if he could play one year as Ray's partner in crime (i.e the other MLB beside Lewis) so he could learn from our beloved Hall of Famer, putting him in good position to take the reigns when Ray's cleats finally get hung up.

The only problem with Beason is......he's too nice of a guy lol. I have a feeling he's one of those guys who would stay on his team and lead it through the down years in order for the team to get back on it's feet. Even if he never got a ring in the process. So basically I have a feeling thats its gonna come down to how badly he wants to have a legitimate shot at a ring.......

Wouldn't they just franchise tag him?
well don't they need beason's consent to do that? what if he wants a change in scenery.

Here's an idea that is actually worth merit for once. Not bad. What linebacker wouldn't want to be a part of this "historically" great defense. Beason is a Ravens type player would make up for our lack of LB play makers. Think it's a match made in heaven.

The only question left is Right Player, Right Price.

They could franchise tag him, and no they would not need his consent.

But they also might have to franchise tag DeAngelo Williams if they want to keep him. But ofcourse with the new collective bargaining agreement (who knows what the deal would be).

Whoever they hire as HC would probably have keeping Beason as priority #1. Saying this is a pipe dream is an understatement IMO.

I'd love to see this, but it's not gonna happen anytime soon, if ever.
well as I said, he is a free agent in 2011 (barring the fact that Carolina will probably franchise him) so another couple of months isn't THAT long of a wait.

Just out of curiosity can someone explain the franchise tag to me.....how is it possible for a team to just force a player to stay with them for the remainder of his career that has got to violate some constitution.

It's not technically forcing. Its all part of the bargaining agreement between the players union and the NFL. Its a business of contracts. It sucks for a franchised tagged player if he wants to leave but there is some benefits to the player. Like their franchise tagged year's salary would be guaranteed in its entirety.

A player can complain and whine about not wanting to play for a specific team anymore which can lead to the decision not to tag him.

Price is a concern of course; and we still have to pay Ngata at the end of the year (thank god Ngata doesn't appear to be a guy who will stop trying after he collects his money).

I think we will have the cap to bring him in, assuming guys like Gaither, Fabian and TJ aren't brought back; and hopefully we do something about Gregg's contract as well. Also Pryce is no longer on the payroll next year so that's a nice chunk of change freed up too.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well they were already dumb enough to switch him to OLB to allow Dan Connor to play MLB.

I found that really odd, but hes a beast either way.

Beason is the type of player you could build your defense around, and he will be on of the biggest reasons someone would want to coach that team. He is too special to just let go, and I think they realize that.

The only way I can see him not come back, is if Denver fires Josh McDaniels and Carolina hires him....

It's a nice thought but Beason is their best defensive player and I doubt they'd trade him away unless the compensation was too good to pass up.

Poor Panthers. Not only are they playing us this Sunday in an underdog fight. But the fans of the other team are talking about trying to get their best defensive player.

This is like saying any of our FAs would leave for other teams after our 6-10 season or 5-11 season. I'm surprised how often people come around here with all these fantasy scenarios. Now if there is some news about how Jon Beason would like to leave Carolina like when Peppers was crying a while back, this would be a reasonable topic, but even then Carolina was unwilling to match Peppers' demands. Jon Beason on the other hand is arguably the best MLB in the NFL (although he is playing outside this season). Carolina would pay top dollar to keep him just like the Ravens would pay Ray Lewis. He isn't going to hit FA because players put money first. The fantasy scenario where Beason becomes a Raven is nice, imo Beason is the closest thing to Ray Lewis himself, and both are Miami products.

I don't think there's any question that if the Ravens COULD get Jon Beason then they would, provided that the price is right. However, it's like others have said, why would the Panthers not do everything in their power, including the franchise tag, to keep Beason on their team? He was arguably already their best defensive player even when Peppers was there, so I don't think they're just gonna let him go without any fight. As much as I love the thought, it's not a realistic possibility at this point until Beason starts saying things like he doesn't want to play for them anymore...

Well unlike most topics where people want to bring in darrel revis or Nnamdi Asomugha, players who are making good money, on decent/good teams Jon Beason is on a team that could potentially go 1-15. So there is some merit here, it was more of a hypothetical scenario I didn't intend to ruin your day over it.
