Who Do You Want To See Returning Punts?

It has less to do with speed more to do with reading the field, having composure, and knowing which route to run with blocking scheme ahead of him. Best example would be golden tate in NE patriots. the time he receives the bal, he READs the field, and know how to execute on field. our receivers just try to run with straight athleticism, running as fast as possible forward blindly, or in zibbys case, run sideways then read the field and get sacked in 10yard or near end zone.

im pretty sure tate is pretty darn fast but other than good post

His name is Brandon Tate but yes, he's an amazing kick returner.

Reed showed good vision to me on his first kick return but again, he shouldn't have taken out the kick at the end.

I really don't know why punt returning has been such a problem. Speed isn't necessary to be a good returner but guys have either not hit a hole, ran sideways like you said or put the ball on the turf. Blocking has been an issue too.

Reed had one of the longer kick returns of the season on the first kick he brought out against the Falcons. And while him bringing the ball out near the end of the game was a a bad decision, at least he showed some breakaway speed, unlike Parmele.
Parmele showed that burst consistently last season. Do you think he lost it? I think he just didn't have the blocking this year. Guy's were swarming him by the time he got to the 15. But the blocking seems to have gotten a little better so maybe he could do it now.

Remember though, Parmele only returned 9 kicks last year. The blocking looks like it's failed some this year but we've seen Jalen bring the ball out from three, four, five yards in the end-zone with no momentum.

But again, I think the kick return game is fine with Reed. He'll learn not to take kicks out when he's several yards deep.

It's the punt return game that needs a shot in the arm.

Yep. Wasn't totally sold on him coming into the season and, for whatever reason, he hasn't been very productive. He just doesn't look the same, running, either.. he looks stiffer and slower.

Anyone not named Tom Zbikowski (too slow and indecisive), Lardarius Webb (fumble prone and coming off an injury) or Ed Reed (for health reasons). I'd really like to see David Reed or Stallworth get a shot. Speed kills, and they both have it.

Id take anybody over carr... I dont think we have tge luxury of choosing who is or isnt a returner especially when its desperate enough that our 36 year old banged up receiver is offering to help.

except Zibby

im thinking put harbs back there since he used to coach the position and doesn't do much coaching here. He could have the playbook down in a week. Ozzie for the love of whatever why would you take a coach that has no experience coaching offense or defense. This guy is a special teams coach..Surprise the weakest link on the team.

So, you don't like Harbaugh either? 2 playoff berths and on pace for a 3rd in a row.....

Stallworth D.Reed what happen to P.Miller he looked solid in preseason
David Reed is a kick returner only.

He's on the practice squad. I think he might have secured himself a spot on the team he he played a little better at CB and not muffed a punt in the final pre-season game.

Donte Stallworth or Cary Williams
Williams hasn't returned a single punt in the NFL and returned one his entire college career.

I think David Reed looks good fielding kickoffs. He made one bad decision at the end of the game against the Falcons, but can you blame him? He wanted to make a play and give the offense better field position. Still should've have taken it out though...

Stallworth gets my vote. The reverses were amazing, he was shedding blockers left and right. Although punts are different, he seems to have a better head on his shoulders.

I just think it is so sad that our punt returns are so bad that Derrick Mason has tried to step up. Another reason why I love that man.

Please no Ed Reed. He makes the right decisions, but good god I always think he isn't going to get up under the pile.

What, precisely, is the difference between punt and kick returning? People are saying how D. Reed is a KICK returner when people bring him up, but isn't it the same thing? Deciding whether to run, and then taking it north and south?

The way the ball is fielded and how coverage units approach the return man are completely different. It takes less skill to field a kick-off, run behind a lead-blocker and find a seam.

On punts, you have to feel whether calling a fair catch or fielding the punt is the better option, actually secure the punt and then quickly find a way to get North and South.

Punt returner is a much more difficult and nuanced position than KR. That said, we don't have a whole lot of option out there more attractive than David Reed. I would say give Stallworth a chance at it first and maybe even let Cary Williams take a few reps in practice to see if he shows any promise at it. Let David Reed do the same. Stallworth seems the most attractive option, which is kind of a shame.

We need to get the best PR in the draft next year. ST is over looked and very important. I guess Harbaugh must have forgot about that.

Really? The team had options in the punt return game this season but didn't know figure the blocking would be as poor at it's been.
