If The Ravens Were In The NFC West....

Winning division in the AFC North has more prestige than winning division in the NFC West. If the Ravens move to the NFC West, they would get too comfortable at winning and lose the cunningness and hard-nosed attitude of an AFC North team.

its really not...
I think that it's naive to suggest the Ravens and Steelers would meet "a lot" in the Super Bowl. To my knowledge, only two pairs of teams have ever been matched up in the Super Bowl more than once. LINK

The Cowboys and Steelers played the championship game three times, spread over 20 years. And the Cowboys and Bills played back-to-back Super Bowls in the 90s.

It's not realistic. Also, you voted "no" in your own poll?

every great team NEEDS another great team to push them to the next level.

1. Magic's Lakers needed Bird's Celtics and visa versa to make them great!

2. Jordan's Bulls needed Isiah's Pistons and visa versa to make them great!

so..Ray Lewis' Ravens need Ben's Steelers and visa versa to make them great!

AFC NORTH is where they will stay!

This thread is interesting from the fact that when the NFL and AFL merged, the Steelers, Colts, and Browns were moved from the old NFL, which became the NFC, to the new AFC (mostly old AFL teams.) Those were, of course the old Browns which became the Ravens. In those days Atlanta was in the West with the Saints, Rams, and 9ers. I know this doesn't mean anything, just remembering days gone by, especially with the talk of Johnny U. lately. And...Baltimore Colt history belongs to us!!

Your subtitle of "if only" begs to differ but, eh.

I like being in the AFC North and, better yet, being in constant contention in the AFCN.

Why would we want to lose the beautiful rivalry we have with Pittsburgh for the sake of a few cheap wins? Baltimore and Pittsburgh make each other better teams.
Exactly. Win or lose, every game against the Steelers is a brawl. A hard-hitting, no-holds-barred, slug fest in which both teams are giving it their all and the game isn't decided usually until the final seconds of the 4th quarter. I may hate the Steelers, but I certainly have a level of respect for them (except for when they're getting bogus calls to go in their favor against us and other NFL teams). Winning the NFC West just wouldn't have the same impact as being able to say we won the AFC North over the Steelers.

Wishful thinking. To be honest I think that would make us worse as a team. You play against inferior competition 6/16 games, you kind of get used to it. Imagine if we were in the NFC West since our inception in the league...we'd be a far worse team nowadays.

I'm glad the Ravens are in the AFC North and every game is meaningful and every game is physical. That's what makes these games worth watching. Would you really tune in to Ravens-Rams if we were in that division? Hell no. But even Ravens-Browns in the AFC North is worth watching because you know you're about to get one helluva game.

First why the NFC West... U could have said AFC West too or JUST WEST period.... But if the Ravens were in either of West Divisions then we would have a totally different Roster and personnel. Our roster was built around physical play from the old AFC Central division which also had (Titans, Jaguars, Steelers, Bengals, Ravens, Browns) most of these teams were run-oriented teams with stingy defenses when the divisions re-aligned the Jaguars and Titans found themselves in bad position trying to defend P.Manning with a slower run-stopping defense.. Bottom line the division dictated how that team was built...

West teams over the years have been more pass oriented with the occasional run heavy team (Seattle the good years), I mean if we were in that division those years and had to deal with Rams high power offense no way we build a bulky front that we were known for.. we would have had edge rushers just for quick pressure...

The NFL set them up, loosely, on geographic reason. No one would ever refer to Baltimore as "western" USA..

Why's this guy getting so much flak for asking a question about opinions? And what happened to any given Sunday? Who says playing in a weak division makes you weaker? That's a load of bull, I'd like to see some kind of stats to back that up. How about you take the Chargers for example, they're a great football team in a bad division and it's been that way for awhile (this year is skewed a little bit though), how about the Colts, they've almost never had any competition except for this year really in the division and they've dominated this decade. Don't respond to topics if you're just gonna try to be the devils advocate and unnecessary. (and with poorly judged opinions on what makes teams bad/good)

To the two examples you brought up in the Chargers and Colts, for as successful as they've been in the play-offs, they've consistently come up short in the play-offs as well.

You may not "care", but they did. That's why they're in the NFC West, have been since the AFL-NFL merger..

There is a certain amount of a cyclical nature to great teams in the NFL. The Colts have been good for a decade now, but for a few years before they got Manning they weren't anything to write home about. The Patriots have been crappy before, though since Belichick and Brady teamed up we haven't seen that side of them. The Rams were the Greatest Show on Turf ten years ago and now they struggle along in a soft division, and the 49ers have a similar story. So to move us over there now would just mean having a hard time in ten years or so.

However, I'm certainly glad to be in the AFC North, a division that commands respect, right now. Between the Ravens and the Steelers the North fields two of the NFL's best teams. That's something.

The Colts have dominated a division in which every year Jacksonville and Houston finish 7-9 or 8-8 and Titans somewhere around there as well... The colts dominate because they not only win 5 r all 6 division games but they win at least 6 r 7 games outside of the division...

Teams in the West divisions are not sorry because of divisional play they sorry because they usually get dominated against other conference division teams... When have a divisions whose winners have been 9-7 or 10-6 for the past 4 years with at least 2 teams winning 5 or less games as have been the case in years past in both west divisions then it is a weak division.......

this year all the teams show improvement so they will not be 3-13 r 4-12 like years past...

The colts have won divisions over the last decade... While the Cardinals and Chargers have had division titles by default over the last few seasons because other teams in the division have less than 7 wins..

St Louis is pretty west. Definitely not west coast or close to it. But because bigger cities are more scarce, the map kind of stretches if you know what I mean.

everyone says the nfc east/ nfc beast is the best in football. hence, they have a primetime game every week! inluding the redskins get primetime games even after going 4-12.
Thank goodness for flexible scheduling. Hopefully, we won't see any more embarassing (though amusing) 59-28 blowouts.

I have to agree with others. The rivalry between the Ravens-Steelers has few matches anywhere else in the NFL. I personally love it for the challenge and especially the hard-nosed style of play. It is the primary reason I chose the Ravens as the team that I was going to root for (aside from the fact that they weren't the Steelers,LOL). Consider the fact that the Steelers have been around for 75 years and it took them 9 years to get their first ring, it only took the Ravens 5 years. If they keep it up, it wont take them that long to match it.
