Most Anticipated Future Album Releases?

47 posts in this topic

I just can't get that excited over new music. I haven't liked a new album from beginning-to-end since KiD CuDi's debut album and Trey Songz' "Ready," both of which I had gotten at the same time. They were both released late last year, so it's been over a year since I've heard an album that I've liked. Every year, my number of favorite albums seems to diminish more and more. I feel as if artists in all genres just aren't trying as hard and are focusing more on recording a couple of quality songs and the rest is just filler.

Have you listened to Mos Def's The Ecstatic or Reflection Eternal's Revolutions Per Minute?

Not a fan of Reflection Eternal and I usually have to be in a certain mood to listen to Mos Def. Mos is a great lyricist, but because I listen to so much new music across so many genres by nature of my radio job, I don't always have the patience to sit and listen for lyrics like I used to.

Ironically, after I said I haven't been excited over any new albums, two albums entered my queue last night and went straight to the iPod: J. Cole's Friday Night Lights and Avant's The Letter.

I'm really picky about my contemporary R&B, so I'm surprised I liked Avant's album after being disappointed in his last one. J. Cole's mixtape surpassed all of my expectations; I always thought he'd be relegated to being an above-average lyricist with no cohesive albums to his credit, but this mixtape was better than most of the albums I've heard in the past couple of years. Lots of variety in topics and pretty consistent beat selection and lyricism across the board.

I've played both albums on repeat since last night and my iPod will probably be dead by the end of today.

Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is worth a purchase. Even though a handful of tracks on the final cut were already made (legally) available for free through Kanye's personal blog as part of his G.O.O.D. Friday series, the new material is just as good, if not better.

So now I guess I have 3 contenders for my personal album of the year choices. All of this after a down year in music for me. :)

That's good to hear. I have yet to hear J.Cole's mix-tape but from few guest appearances I've heard, the guy is a really good MC.

I believe J. Cole produced the majority of the mixtape also which makes him all the more impressive. Personally I prefer The Warm Up but that's probably because it came out last year and I've listened to it a lot more.

Lupe Fiasco - Lasers. Must have listened to "The Show Goes on" at least a 100 times at home, in the car, and at the gym. Every party I've been to the last couple weeks this song has been played at least once.

My Chemical Romance - Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys. The two new singles are so different from their usual style, but I found myself enjoying both. Look forward to how they sound in this new album.

Yeah, My Chemical Romance is awesome. I'm pleased that they've been around so long: "We'll Carry On."

Yeah well, this is the I-Tunes era. CD stores (and to a lesser degree DVD) are slowly but surely dying as the world makes the transition from MP2 to MP3.

Trey Songz is a decent artist?! He always struck me as the Justin Bieber of R&B.

No, the Justin Bieber of R&B is Chris Brown, even though Brown came on the scene first. He's gotten poppier and poppier with his music and his career is pretty much on life-support right now after all the bad publicity he's gotten and his atrocious last album.

Trey Songz can sing well when he is given a song to show off his vocal prowess, but most of his stuff is pop-R&B lately. I don't mind his pop sound, I'm just picky as to his approach to it. He's also an OK songwriter, as he penned his debut album I Gotta Make It, which was an unpolished but highly-underrated album at the time. He also has Aretha Franklin's endorsement, which is surprising since she doesn't just sign off on anybody.
