Haloti Ngata Fined $10,000 For His Hit On Henne

20 posts in this topic

"What constitutes a legal yet physical hit? In the four-minute video, which can be viewed on NFL.com, the prime example of what is legal came in the Week 1 Monday night game between the Ravens and Jets.

Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis hit Jets tight end Dustin Keller. On the play, Keller was a defenseless receiver, but Lewis' rattling hit came on the shoulder-to-chest area to separate Keller from the ball."

The NFL article goes on to call the "hit by New England's Brandon Meriweather on Baltimore's Todd Heap" "inexcusable." (quoted from NFL insider article "What's legal?" on NFL.com.).

After watching this hit many times, I was amazed that even though that Haloti Ngata is 6' 4" and around 385 lbs, he is approaching the QB at top speed. He seemed to be engaged with the blocker and only looked up just before hitting Henne. It is not surprising that the resulting collision knocked Henne back 5 yards. He didn't hit him too high or too low. My only afterthought was that he didn't get his head up quicker before the collision.

In last night's game, there were many bad calls against us. It just goes to show that the league is hard on us. Maybe the puppeteers that control the referees bet heavily against us. :baltimore-ravens:

What an absolute joke.

Where do you want players to hit the quarterback?

Haloti was obviously trying to keep his helmet down and avoid a helmet-to-helmet on the quarterback, and this happens.

I'm spewing!

This irks me but not as much as a defensive player being fined if his hand even brushes the QB's head.

Yeah. I've only watched football since 2007 really, but I've seen a noticeable degradation in the rules around hits in just that short space of time.

Goodell and the owners have been very busy softening things up in the past 4 seasons.

Goodell probably had his panties in a bunch after he saw what Ray Lewis said to Prime Time about hitting the QB last night before the game.

What amazes me the most is that you think Ngata is "around 265 lbs"..... :D

Let me explain the NFL conspiracy theory for those who have only been watching football for a few years. It all began when the owners tried to block us from getting an expansion team after the Colts moved to Indy. They were totally embarrassed when the Browns relocated here. To make matters worse, we won the Super Bowl in 2001. After 2001, our defense remained strong, but our offense was weak. In 2003, we returned to the playoffs, but lost to the Titans. In 2006, we were defeated by the Colts. In 2008, we lost to the Steelers. Last year, we were defeated by the Colts again. This year, we have a promising team that seems to be underachieving. Bad calls cost us the game in Cincy and possibly even the game last night.
This is why the people of Baltimore and surrounding areas are skeptical when bad calls cost us games.

Bad calls happen to every team.....there is the human element involved in officiating and it will never be an exact science. To be honest, the "conspiracy theory" crap pisses me off. IMO, it makes us (as a fan base) look weak and pathetic.

This needs to stop! Everytime the Ravens lose a close game it is always the fault of the refs according to a lot of fans. It is not the job of the refs to throw a flag to bail the Ravens or any other team out of a lose. Refs miss calls just like receivers miss balls, look for your team to make a play to win the game! How do you think Miami fells after watching lil ben fumble the football into the end zone, come out of the pile with the ball only to have the refs say they are not sure who recovered the ball. Now that is either getting jobed or that Buffalo Wild Wings guy hit the wrong button.

To continue to blame a loss on the refs to me is the mentality of a loser!

Good post. I agree. We get calls our way a lot of times as well. It was a bad call but bad calls are still part of the game. It sucks. If we really wanted to win this game. We would've shut them down on their first set of downs.

I'm sure with the millions (and millions) he's getting this offseason will make up for it.

It is going to be a HUGE contract!

If it was a helmet to helmet contact, Hene shoulda be in the hospital since then, espcially from an athletic and speedy 350bls DT going nearly full speed.

I'm not supporting the conspiracy theory, only explaining it to the newcomers. Actually, I love it when we finally get to the QB. Our pass rush has been pretty tame so far this year. Atlanta rocked Flacco, but we couldn't get to Ryan enough to slow him down. I'm really concerned about the way that they drove on us in the hurry up near the end of the game. Even without the PI call, they would have probably kicked a long field goal to win it. I expected that we would have 6 losses this year with the tough schedule that we were given. All we can do now is hope that we win the next 3 straight and Pittsburgh chokes.
