Do We Have Too Many Weapons?

6 posts in this topic

This might appear, at first sight, as a strange question. On the other hand, I actually think it's good.

Firstly, with all the intense criticism people are giving Joe I think Ravens fans often over-look the tremendous pressure this guy receives just from the new, prolific players we've acquired. We know, for instance, Boldin is here because he believes this is his best option for a championship. The same for TJ. Stallworth is here looking to refresh his career. Still, Derrick Mason is also wanting that championship. One thing other than the desire for a championship that all these guys have in common is that all of them want to be the "hero" - the go-to-guy. None of them, though, seem to be pleased with their role. All of them want more playing time. Further, we not only have Ray Rice but Willis McGahee and Leron Mcclain. Each of these players wants to produce as much yards as well. This is a job for these guys - the game is a bonus at this level. Joe has too many guys to please and not enough time to please them all. I think fans often over-look this.

What if Cam is trying to incorporate all of these guys instead of sticking with what's most efficient. Trying to please them all and various times in the game? We see Cam move from the run, to the pass; from the pass, to the run with strange inconsistency.

IF what I suggest is true, could all these weapons be a obstacle? Could it be to our own detriment that we have that much talent on the team? Instead of choosing plays that might work, perhaps we place too much of a priority trying to make time for all the guys which might, in fact,be problematic.

None of this is an implication that our offense some how stunk tonight against the Falcons. Our defense got worked...again. I was just curious about this, though.

It's a good question. I think a better or more appropriate question would be "Can Cam Cameron handle that many weapons?" and my answer would be no. Cam got blessed with guys like LT, Gates and Rivers where it was simple play calling.

If this team spends a first round pick on an offensive player (besides maybe center) I will go crazy. We need to rebuild the defense before we lose that Baltimore Ravens hard nose football culture.

Our offense isn't the problem. They handed our defense a lead with 1 minuted to go and they promptly allowed an 80 yard TD drive in 40 seconds.

I've asked this question myself at times and honestly no, I don't think the team has too many weapons. Cam is finding a to better utilize them(the screens to Q and reverses to Stallworth as evidence) but his biggest problem is STILL not understanding that when a particular facet of the game is working, you don't go away from it.

The first half was a perfect example.

Agreed. I actually said, though, that this post wasn't an implication that our offense stunk. I was just curious as to whether others have thought this and what their thoughts might be, because it does often seem we try to hard to incorporate everybody - plus their ideas on what needs to be done. I won't blame Cam or Greg for tonight's loss but I will say that, if players are trying to get involved more so in the affairs of coaches and coordinators AND if the coaches are yeilding to this to make everyone happy - trying hard to avoid division due to what each high-profile players want - then this might be a problem with our team.

I understand what you are saying but all the so-called weapons are there to win a championship. I believe they are putting their egos aside and stepping up when it is their time to shine. If they are complaining over not getting enough catches then they sure are doing it quietly. Flacco is having a little trouble trying to ensure that all the wide receivers keep their stats up and keep from getting sack by the fading Offensive Line. Ray Rice has become a true NFL running back and I believe Willis McGahee is just taking up space on the bench. (just my opinion) He gets a few touches here and there but he's not the same player he use to be.

Cam is becoming a little inconsistent but I believe he is trying to figure out how to incoporate all the weapons into the game. He's been in the game for a long time so he'll be back on it ASAP!

This lost to Atlanta was a real heartbreaker but it shows them that they are a playoff caliber team but they have to learn to come out and attack early on offense and use that #1 Defense to shut it down! :)
