Whats Mike Preston's Problem With Flacco?

31 posts in this topic

Yesterday on 1057 he was saying that flacco doesent have the ability to become an alite qb. He ignores the fact that hes won 3 road playoff games in 2 years andon his way to another playoffs. He must also ignore that since the cincy game, flaccos been the highest rated qb in the league. Then, i read his grades for the week. He gave a qb with 2tds 260+ yards, 130 rating and a win, a B.

Sorry for the rant but he really irritates me

There are people who post on this site that don't like Flacco, people (whose names I won't mention) that trash Flacco for whatever their reasons are, and will continue to do so. I wouldn't surprise me if there are Indy "fans" out there that trash Peyton Manning for "only" winning one superbowl so far. Who cares what one man's opinion of any player is. There are people that still think Trent Dilfer was a poor choice at qb in 200, but he still won a superbowl, didn't he? Most of us know that Flacco's done a great job and will only get better with time, and the rest can think whatever they want, it won't change the fact that Flacco is and will be our quarterback of the future.

Mike Preston just doesn't get Flacco.

The best explanation I've heard is Preston wants a Lamborghini QB. Someone who blows out the tunnel week 1 and throws 3 td's a game with 300+ yards. Flacco is more of a Lexus sports car. He slowly throughout the season gets better and better and before you know it you're going 170mph down the highway and have no idea how you got that fast.

Mike Preston just takes any chance he can get to hate on the Ravens. One of the worst home-team columnists I've ever seen. He constantly comes up with skewed logic to back up his outrageous claims. Best thing people can do at this point is to just stop reading his articles.

I don't really see Preston bashing Flacco too often. I was a little bothered by him saying Joe wont be a top QB (whatever that means) in this league because he came from Delaware... I'm not saying Joe is a "top-whatever Qb" but to have an argument and support it by determining a players worth/iteligence/ability/potential (etc..)by the school he attended? Thats weak to me. Sure, top tier athletes are generally found at the big time schools but its not a RULE, plenty of players have made it from schools not to be considered powerhouses.

Mike Preston is in the business of selling newspapers. Mike looks for anything negative and just harps on it. Why?? Cause hate and negativity sells better then Raven love. Hate your job? Here is what else you should hate.

Plain in simple Mike Preston is great at what he does, and thats get a rise out of people and peak interest to the B-more Sun.

Theres this certain weird irony when it comes to him, the same people who say Preston watches games to hate on Flacco will read his blogs to hate on him with insults. Now I don't agree with everything he says but I still don't understand calling him irritating and fat because you don't agree with his point of view.

He has opinion, you have yours. I'm not sure why this needed to get all personal.

Agreed. The more I've read his columns and heard him on the radio, I've come to realize the amount of negative attention Preston gets in this town is hilarious.

The only difference between Preston and a random coach potato in Baltimore or better yet, a poster on this very forum, is Mike has the credentials and platform to express his opinions for wide consumption. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape over them.

If Preston doesn't believe Joe will develop into a QB like Phillip Rivers, so be it. I'll continue watching games to see if Joe can prove him wrong. Whatever Joe's ceiling is though, the fact is, he's already developed into a QB that gives his team the chance to win almost every game.

Also, it's important to note that not everyone wants to read all sunshine and roses in their news. Sure, the expectation is that the local media should support the local team, but keep in mind that Mike Preston is a columnist, not a journalist or beat writer; as a columnist, his job is to be opinionated, whether or not his opinion is contrarian. The journalists and beat writers have to be objective.

Just because Preston criticizes the team and doesn't have opinions that align with everyone else's, that doesn't mean he doesn't support the team or like the players. Again, his job is to have an opinion that makes people read, whether or not that readership is because of their like or dislike of him.

That poses another question, would you rather have an elite QB with no rings like Rivers? or a flawed Superbowl MVP like Eli?

Flacco doesn't necessarily have to be the next Rivers... but it wouldn't hurt :P

Agreed. NFL Network's greatest player of all time on their Top 100 list is Jerry Rice, and he came from tiny Mississippi Valley State, which plays in the FCS (formerly Division I-AA). I doubt anyone could argue successfully against Rice being considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of all time at any position, so the school doesn't necessarily make the player or determine his potential.

Remember, 15 teams passed over Rice because of a reportedly slow 40-time and because he came from a small school. I bet those 15 teams would go back and re-do that selection in half a heartbeat if they could.

He doesn't do it anymore but I have a friend who is an Indy fan that bashed manning for his first 4 or 5 year.

No one knows what elite really means because everyone has different definitions of it. What I do know is that you can determine anything this soon in a quarterback's career. Flacco is still learning the game and the position and if he is playing winning football at the same time you are in good shape.

Let him sell papers, if anyone is still buying. I just wish they woule get him off The Fan. There is enough interesting discussion by good sports personalities on that station without adding purely controversial figures.

If you are into just stats 260+ yards, 2 td's and 130 QB rating sounds great but I think Preston was just going by what he saw on the field on Sunday. We won on Sunday and that is the most important stat but this game should have been a blow out for the Raven's early. There were a lot of missed opportunities out there on Sunday but one not missed was the win!

Mike is secretly in love with Flacco. That is his way of trying to throw it off and stay off the radar. Any body who listens to him on the Bruce Cunningham show can tell Mike has a man crush on Flacco!

While I'm not the biggest Flacco fan... Mike Preston is just dumb. Don't even subject yourself to reading his articles or listening to his ramblings. Truth be told, anyone on this board deserves a paycheck to write for The Sun over him.

Then he must have ranted on Dilfer the entire 2000 season even though we won the Super Bowl

Personally I refuse to read anything Preston writes, my prerogative as a fan. Negativity gets him clicks for ads. In his first 3 years Flacco is better then any QB's we have had in the past while they were in Baltimore.
