Winnning Ugly

5 posts in this topic

After watching the Steelers and Ravens play for years I noticed that the Steelers would always win games even when it seemed like they wouldn't IE "winning ugly" and the Ravens would lose those same games and we would come back and talk about stats and what not. But this season the Ravens are actually winning those ugly games. Run defense looks like swiss cheese we won(Browns game), pass defense looked like swiss cheese we won(Bills game). The pass rush has not done well this season and we still win. The Steelers have found a way to win even with the problems they have and now it seems the Ravens are doing the same. Is it because of the coaching? Maybe, Im not sure. Our defense is not as talented in all phases as it once was but here we are sitting at 6-2 after dismantling "Chowder" heads team. People seem a bit too concerned about stats. Ravens can win ugly all the way to the SB for all I care.

Exactly. A win is a win, no matter how it's attained. Playing pretty doesn't always mean winning pretty.

I know it sounds like a cliche, but not every team knows how to win close games. Yes, it sounds stupid because winning a close game is, on the surface, the same as winning any game -- you score more points than the other team. However, the human element comes into play, as winning a close game requires an elevated level of mental toughness and conditioning that is beyond the normal baseline for any athlete. Winning a close game means that you have to pull out an extra ounce of everything over the other team -- effort, stamina, ability, and confidence. Teams can lose close games simply because they're too tired or don't show extra effort or don't possess the athleticism to carry out that extra effort.

A team that can win close games is a team that can match up with any team in the league. Remember, the Super Bowl Champion isn't always the best team in the league, just the team that won the right games at the right time.

When you win close games in the season, you identify what you have to work on but you still come out with what counts - a win.

Look at the Jets coming off their bye. They look awful.

Look at the Saints winning the Superbowl. They barely escaped a handful of games.

And now look at us. We're better than ever.

And just to add, as much as i HATE close games, they tend to be the best victorys. A blowout is obviously not as fun (and sastisfying)as a close battle till the final minute of the game.It shows which team was better when it counted. But saying that, the "blowout" denver game WAS exciting to be at! Go ravens!
