Run Defense

harb better fix that run d , we looked pathetic at times, specifically the left side, fins kept runing it towards the left side so many times and they were successful, put cody in there or mckinney or divens , someone that can tackle on that d-line

Brown had 3 good carries early in the 1st : 12 yds, 11 yds and 14 yds. After that, he was pretty much shut down. One and two yd runs. This, combined with the fact that they were behind, is why Miami abandoned the running game.

Edit: If you are referring to the TD run, well, it was a really good fake. Our entire D bit on it and no one knew he had the ball.

Its a problem that I have given up trying to figure out. There are two different players than last year with those people being Redding and McClain (since he's replaced Ellerbe). Most of the runs are going right up the middle so that makes me lean towards McClain.

However, from what I've seen, I think Kelly Gregg isn't the player he once was. He's the nose tackle.

What exactly should Harbaugh do to fix it? The inclusion of Cody, McKinney and Divens alone isn't going to fix it. There are simply plays where guys are getting blocked and until the talent improves along the d-line, we'll continue see it from time to time.

Put the big man at the NT and then kick Gregg out to play where Redding is, all three of those 10+ yard runs were directly at Redding.

I'm pretty sure it was Redding who gave up that TD, he got completely flattened by Vernon Carey and let the blockers through.

Edit: I'd rather we bend than break.

Redding certainly did get washed out but to your suggestion, Cody is learning the game and I think Gregg would still get blocked at DE.

I can't remember what game it was but we did something like that already earlier in the year when Redding was hurt. Our d-line was Ngata, Gregg, and backup NT McKinney. I remember we got run on then too.

I think our run d wasn't horrible, I think we've become spoiled in some ways from past defenses that was shutdown. I'm starting to accept the defense for it is, not great but above average. We still have ray and Ed to play superman when we absolutely gotta make a play.

Man, what do you want? No matter how good our Dline is, there are runners out there
who will make yards and there are coordinators out there who will come up w/ plays
to get yards. What you really want the Ravens to do is make adjustments and hold
them to minimum gains until you do figure it out. Today was such a game. Yeah, they
were behind, but at the half it was 13-10; they just couldn't run in the 2d half.

The run d on first drive was shakey but at least they made tha adjustment in the second half. It was jus their first drive where i almost threw tha remote on my tv. Other than that run d was solid.

I see both sides of the argument. Yes Brown didn't have a big game in the end, but he was averaging a very good yards per carry average.

Our defence on the ground has looked far more susceptable to big gains all season. We need to tighten up, or this will ultimately hurt our pass defence in the long run.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but I saw Kruger lined up next to Haloti on the 1st drive (when all the damage on the ground happened).

I'm not sure why that was.

Also, I always see Ray attack the LOS and the guy who is supposed to block him but it appears that the other ILB (usually McClain) isn't filling as well as Ellerbe did last season and as well as Bart used too.

I really think Gregg showing a little age and McClain have been the main reasons the Run D isn't as good as it has been in years past. I hope Ellerbe and Cody will be worked in more to help solve this problem.

The TD run that Brown made was off the right side. Both McKinney and Divens were inactive. I didn't notice if Cody had any playing time.

Our run D has gone from brick wall to just ok. They have lapses in run D but still show signs of a brick wall. As long as the Ravens offense grows it will balance out struggles by the defense. Thats why its called a team game. Gotta play good in all phases.

All I know is that touchdown run that Brown got, you could've drove a Cadillac (Not Williams) through that opening.

There's not much you can fit, Its a certain line, where the players we employ just need to play. Cody could be the long term solution, but that will have to be applied with time.

While our pass defense definitely improved in the 2nd half, I don't think we really had an opportunity to show if we improved our run-d. They were running all over us, but for some reason, they didn't give Brown many carries. He was easily on pace for 120+ yards.

We better make some adjustments for Thursday, because the Falcons wont be so quick to abandon the run.

Are run D right now is ranked number 9 in the nfl! I wouldn't call it soft as a cupcake....It is still very very good!

It is only going to get better! Don't worry

Why does it matter? Too many people are caught up with stats and forgetting about what's really important...Winning. I don't care where our Defense or Offense is ranked, I wouldn't care if an RB put up 300 yeards on us. What I care about is what the final score is and hopefully we have the W.

Our guys on the Dline just dont win the point of attack like they used to with all those great rush Ds that we've had over the years. Even when we had a smaller Dline they didnt lose the point of attack like they do this year at times.

Yep, nothing to see here, shut the forum down.

It's okay to drink the kool-aid and say we're winning. But we are also here to talk about how we can get better and move up to the next level. That's what fans do, and there's nothing wrong with discussing areas of improvement.

I would guess a heavy dose of Turner Thursday night..We'll see how good the run defense is then..
[/quote]
Falcons usually live and die by how well Turner is playing in a game and the kind of yards he puts up. I cant overstate it enough the importance to take Turner out of the game and force Ryan to win in the air.

I concur. The front seven, specifically Gregg, Cody, McKinney and Redding, has to have a strong game. Atlanta's guards Dahl and Blalock are quality players.

C Todd McClure is playing well too, probably better than the guards. These guys are going to come out hot and scrape, hustle and play dirty in the middle.
