The question popped in my mind recently. Dont get me wrong, I have learned to love John Harbaugh, but would he do this if he was playing for Bill Bellichek or Bill Parcells? I don't think so. No player should be more important than the team and I am a little embarrased for the coaches because they deserve better.

Ray Lewis also blitzed the A-gap in that San Diego game when it wasn't the call...

I don't see an issue with Ed's laterals. At the end of the day, football is a game, even at the NFL level. It obviously fires up the players and, hey, it works the vast majority of the time. It does look stupid when he makes a mistake, but don't we all?

But havent the coaches demanded that he stop this? Does he have the authority to do what ever he wants? What if other players begin to do their undisciplined acts too?

On one of the Mic'd up things, they had Harbaugh during the playoff game against the Patriots. Harbs is on the sideline during Reed's INT going no Ed no Ed, tuck the ball, then yes Ed! after a successful lateral. It makes our hearts skip a beat but that is our Reed. I think I can count on one hand and still have a finger or two left the number of times it has ended in disaster. Though that could be a selective memory thing lol

I saw Ed get tackled, look back and want to pass and I screamed no!!! but laughed at
same time. The difference this year is he is thinking more and that is why he didn't
try to lateral to Ray - he saw he couldn't. He had a tight hold on the ball, not
"flapping the ball around" and pulled it back in. He said the same thing in his presser!
He prob has been given the go ahead to lateral the ball but I'm sure he's been told to
think first and read the field.
But it was classic Reed and fun to watch.

2nd game and more interceptions than Polamalu... just sayin...
2 different positions, bruh!

Why would someone expect a strong safety to have as mnay INTs as a free safety?
I don't like comparing those two until they play the same position in all honesty.

You realize that Ed Reed used to play strong safety right? In his first three years, Ed Reed had 21 ints. Troy Polamalu has 22 in his entire career.

Hes a HOF player who has changed the way the game is played when it comes to safeties in pass coverage in this new pass friendly NFL. No he just needs to keep doing him.

More often than not it's helped to generate extra yardage every time he tries to lateral it. The defense practices lateral plays so it's not like it's something they've never seen before. As others have said, this is Ed Reed. Take in everything he offers and most importantly enjoy watching him play and make plays. It's a blessing for him to be out there representing the Ravens.

I really do not care what Ed Reed does, all I know is he makes plays. Maybe everyone else should get on his level.

I'm sure after every game in film study, he gets it pointed out to secure the football. But It's just Reed, its frustrating at time yes. But when he has the ball in his hands , the part of the brain that controls lateral passes sparks up.

I use to want it to stop, but I've just come to realize, that'll never happen.
I agree. Honestly, as great as the reward could be, I'd rather play it safe. Sure, it's more exciting when those laterals turn into longer gains, but unless they go for touchdowns, it's not worth the risk, IMO. The interceptions alone are good enough for me; converting them into field position is just an added bonus only when the offense can capitalize.

You have players that are like Ed all over the NFL. You don't think Peyton pushes the envelope out on the field. Or Lady Brady? How about Ray? He has a great deal of latitude. There are many others and some of them play for Bellichek and Parcells. Why? Why do coaches put up with it, even encourage it? Because these guys make plays. If you want to win, you have to take risks. If you want to win big, you have to risk big. Ed risks big, but you cannot disagree that he makes plays.

I wonder that everyone sees this, but everytime Ed has a ball in his hand, I always see him running in slow motion. Is that because he has huge leap and step or just my imagination?

Every time Reed intercepts the ball, I get excited and worried at the same time.

You are not alone. People would change their tune if it cost us a playoff game. But as long as he is in God mode, people will never question him.

An interception is great, but an interception - fumble - opponent recovery is useless/a waste of energy, and what Ed does increases that likelihood, which is fact.

No one likes him trying to lateral, but no one is going to bench him either.

Like others have said, the benefits significantly out weigh the risks with Ed Reed

It wasn't part of a lateral, but he did fumble that interception in the Colts playoff game last season. It was a factor in the loss but not as much as our stagnant offense.

I agree Ed needs to work on his ball security, the point of a takeaway is KEEPING the ball once you take it away. But, he's Ed Reed, one of the greatest players ever. He makes mistakes, but so does everyone.

At least in the Colts game last year I understand it, he was trying to find a spark because our offense was doing nothing. He developed this habit during years of offensive ineptitude, and I've actually grown to like his style. The only thing I'd say is, be decisive. Secure the football, and if the opportunity presents itself and you feel like its a good idea, lateral it. Don't hold the ball out there as you decide, it's crazy!!! It is offensive players trying to tackle you, and they're out of position, but you can't force it.

I remember that play. Garcon punched it out because Ed was palming the ball like he was playing basketball. That pissed me off so much. Such a stupid reason to have it stripped.

No offense, but that last sentence is an excuse for losers, and Ed Reed is not a loser. He got to where he is today by refining his skills and identifying his mistakes, resulting in him being ahead of the curve and being elite. He doesn't compare himself with the average NFL player and what mistakes they make. Asking him to participate in ball security drills should be a necessity, but is also a huge compliment for being a safety. It should only add to his confidence.

I'm sure his confidence in his hands is extremely high, as it should be, but it's bordering on arrogance when you don't protect the football to give your offense a chance to score. I understand his scoring itch, but how often does a lateral lead to a score? Often it leads to maybe 5 more yards, which is hardly worth the risk.
