BJ has had some trouble staying healthy the last few years. And with Yamon coming in and doing a pretty good job, BJ had to go. We cant carry two KR's.

its really a sad day for Raven Fans to see a guy with his talent, leave our Team. especially considering how we all were saying what a powerful and potent the tandem of having both Figurs and Sams would be for this team overall....and really provide the essential depth.....really disappointing. but i wish him all the best luck in the future.

I agree with the above statement. Sams was a great return man, but Figurs is just as good, if not better. That combined with the fact that he did miss the last season-and-a-half, there was no reason to resign him here.

I guess that clears up the "kick-returner controversy."

Sucks to see Sams go, but he was injured often and Figurs has great potential.

However, if we end up drafting Leodis McKelvin in the 1st round we'll have the a pair of good return men on are team again.

definitely, Clady will be too good to pass up if he's there at 8th, but I would personally find it hard to pass up on the best corner in the draft. If the Pats don't take him 7th, I think it would be hard to pass him up as well...

So Darling and Sams are Chiefs now eh? Wouldn't it be interesting is Musa and Gerome Sapp signed with them as well?

Well, thats different because McKelvin will play an actual position. BJ, for all intents and purposes, was just a kick returner. And I know people want to see Yamon become a WR but I am skeptical if that will happen, so to me he's really only a kick returner.

Then we could just call them the Browns #2.

I was thinking the same thing...

and whichever team takes another 2 of our players will be the Browns #3... Im hopin for McKelvin to join the team. That way we would have 2 potential Kick Returners.. Yamon can go WR and go half on KRs... and Kelvin can be nickel CB and do half of the KRs.. Thatd be a great combination and Figurs will (atleast its what I think) become a threat on offense with his speed.

I agree, Cam and the other coaches just need to ensure he develops better hands and that will also help negate any of those muffed punts and kickoffs as well.

Well, if the Chiefs got Smith and Sapp, they would have 4 of our ex players. And the Browns have 4 plus a FO member and some scouts. So, to be Browns #3 they'd have to match that.

As many of the above posts stated, B.J. Sams's worth to the team was represented in the "invisible yardage" he gained whenever he returned kicks. Many people tend to overlook special teams as an intregal part of the game, but the best teams in the league also tend to be the ones who can win the field-position battle early and often.

Although Yamon Figurs is now almost guaranteed to be the undisputed starting return specialist, I'm hoping that the Ravens DO try to pick up another player in the draft that has those skills for depth.

I still firmly believe that, had B.J. Sams not suffered a broken leg in the Thursday Night game in Cincinnati in 2006, the Ravens would not have struggled in those final couple of games, and would likely have been able to beat the Colts in the playoff game, since it all came down to special teams play in the end.

I'm guessing Cory Ross will now be given another look at being a backup returner (giving him a roster spot, should he not be the #2 running back).

Either way, this still almost guarantees that the Ravens will think more seriously about drafting a cornerback/returner like Leodis McKelvin in the first round (even trading down to do so), rather than sit at the #8 spot and "hope" that Matt Ryan falls to them.

i don't care what you guys say but bj sams was a fantastic KR. Figurs is great no doubt, but i did not like a few of his KRs, especially when he dropped the ball, he even lost his job a couple times to Ross. Depth at KR and PR is very important for special teams. The plays that sams made for us put us in the position for several wins. In case sams or figurs got injured, we would have the the other one. and we've all seen how easy it is to get injured on KRs. imo we had 2 of the best KRs in football on the same team but i guess it was too good to be true and wasn't going to last much longer. By the way, ross is a terrible KR, i hope we have at least 1 decent guy behind Figurs. I dont like it when when we use Ed Reed, i dont think its worth getting our starting safety injured.

No worries, now Figurs doesn't have to worry about any competition for PR/KR this year, assuming we don't draft a McKelvin-type (who can return kicks), etc..

I think Yamon just had the rookie jitters. There is alot of pressure and when you screw up you get chewed out pretty bad. Not all guys can deal with that coming right out of college. They lose their confidence and start thinking about screwing up and then they screw up. Hanging around the vets should cure that.

every returner will drop the ball a couple of times a year, even the elite ones of the league. Hester, Cribbs, Hall, you name it they drop it. I can tell you from personal experience that punts are the hardest ones to field especially if the punter knows how to "knuckleball" that sucker.

i think that its the "invisible" difference makers on the field playing (like Sams) that really made the difference out there to the outcome of At LEAST some games. though it now seems like Figurs is gaurenteed the job......there always needs to be the second option for us to fall back on and put in there if need be.....thus i agree with your statement above, Drafting a player like Leodis only makes reality that much clearer in terms of what is "needed" most because not only can he play CB and really provide depth there in which we really need because of Rolles questionable health....he also provides us with a more versitle look in the return game because (like Figurs) he also has speed, and great vision to get into th open field. and with this thought of Matt Ryan falling to us......we dont need him at all..... why waste talent on your roster?......it would most likely be that like the Anderson situation if Ryan would be drafted. if the Team itself thinks we dont have a Quarterback problem....then noone's oppinions or what they think, will change their mindset. because they're not the Ravens and they're not drafting anyone for the future of this team. thus makes them (in a sense) say what they want. but the only real oppinon here is that of the team..bottomline. plain and simple.

and i also agree with what you said on BJ about breaking his leg in 2006....i think that (in a sense and to some degree) that played into the decision not to re-sign him for future use and overall production. therefore we can only wonder and/or speculate as to what could have been.
