James Harrison

So last night they said Harrison may be fined, once again, for lowering his helmet when hitting Brees.
In my pretty biased opinion, it did appear he purposely lowered his helmet and it was certainly unnecessary.

I didn't think it was a bad hit.

You could see the frustration in Harrison after the call. He's not going to be too pleased with this one. I say keep them coming, would love to see Harrison laying off a bit.

Personally, I didn't see anything too wrong with it. I didn't see the hit live, so when I went online to look at it later, I thought they were showing the wrong clip - I just didn't see anything fine or even penalty worthy.

I don't mind James Harrison being fined, though :)

If he did it on purpose then sure fine him but these guys already have it hard on defense. Remember how much we hated being fined last season.

Last night the point they were making was not the lateness of the hit but the fact that he lowered his helmet right before hitting Brees.
Funny thing-the Colts DE's were just all over Schaub last night. But, I didn't see one dirty or late hit. Just pure, crazy speed and strength.

He also had a relatively late hit on the ball carrier literally a few plays later....don't really recall who it was on though.

I hope they aren't that strict. I mean come on now I want safety but not the National Pansie League...
Too late we already reached that point. I'm just waiting for them to put flags on the players at this point.

I think it definitely called for a flag (could you imagine if that were Bieber?? Harrison would probably be in prison right now lol)...but a fine is a bit much.
Although, I must say, I will not write the league in protest if they do fine his neutral zone infracting, helmet-to-helmeting butt.

Well, it was just a matter of time; he's been fined $20,000 for the hit on Brees.

It was a late hit so I understand the penalty but, the fine is too severe in my opinion.
This guy just doesn't get it. I completely understand the fine. His next infraction is definitely a suspension.

The fine on this as an individual infraction is too severe yes. But this is just piggy backing on the infractions Harrisons had before.

I like how his agent is making a feeble attempt at lambasting Goodell. That'll show 'em!! Maybe Harrison should feign retirement threats, again -_-

yeah, they're trying to break him.
The league better just be very careful about picking their battles. Turning this league into National Flag Football League has gone far enough as it is. Eliminating dirty hits is an admirable goal, but when the leagues best defensive players start getting scared to play ball...man...,,,,

Anyone read the article on Ray Lewis in the latest SI and what he had to say about Harrisons hit on Massaquoi. It's a great article where Ray explains that when he first entered the league it was basically anything goes, and now there are just too many rules.

I'm not going to get into the whole rule debate again, but from the league's perspective, how hard is it to just not lead with your helmet at another guy's helmet? The rule shouldn't BE affecting your style of play. Nobody's taught to play that way.

Ya I read that article, pretty good piece. What I wish they would do is get rid of all the defenseless receiver stuff and just make everything illegal when its a hit to the head. No more defenseless receiver, no more strike zone on a QB, all that stuff. Just outlaw hits to the head during a catch.

That fine is ridiculous, I've seen Ray do similar hits. Im sure he will be fined in the future as well. Only good thing about these flags and fines is that we know Fabian Washington wont ever get one with the way he tackles.

As much as I despise the Steelers, just let the man do his job... Leading with your helmet is one thing, a "late" hit on a QB when you've already got momentum is another. But to draw a fine? Ridiculous.

For what it's worth, Justin Tuck made some very insightful, intelligent comments on the subject. (LINK)
"The number one thing is player safety, and as players you've got to have that in the back of your head," Tuck said. "A big kill shot on a quarterback or an offensive player is not more important than the fact of him being able to walk away from the game and go play with his kids at night. That's something that we all have to keep in the back of our heads, and just play the game how it's meant to be played. I know the fans and everybody's gotten so accustomed to all these big hits, but you've just got to do it within the rules of the game. The league is definitely making that an emphasis, so you've just got to abide by it."
So, while Harrison, his agent, and Troy Polamalu continue to complain about the subject, at least one prominent defensive player is taking the right approach. The most accurate part of the whole comment is the end, "so you've just got to abide by it". You fight against Goodell, you lose.. to the tune of 100k. Nice job, Justin.
