Derrick Mason Wants To Return Punts

Let's see how well Donte is going to be, we should aldo give D Reed a chance and then look at Mase. He's way too important for offense to risk something.

I would be wary of throwing Donte' right back into the fire, as he might be initially gun-shy on returns since he broke his foot on a punt return. Better to ease him back into the workload.

David Reed has had his chances but I think one of the coaches said he needs some work on his decision-making.

I think he actually broke his foot on running a route, not fielding a punt.

Stallworth had only three punt returns that night and saw limited time on offense, so it was believed that he broke it during a return. It was reportedly unclear when the injury actually occurred. (LINK)

I wouldnt mind seein Mase take some punts. He may not be the most explosive player anymore but I know he'll make good decisions regarding whether to field the punt, let it go or fair catch and that right there would be an upgrade to the unit.

Poor D-Mase, he just wants better field position for his offense. I think its great how he is asking to return punts though. Thats what you call a team player

As said here may times, I wouldn't want him to return kicks for fear of injury. Mason isn't as young as he was when he was returning Tennessee. I still believe we have other options that John hasn't used yet to me he seems a little slow in making these types of decisions ( remember when all of us on this board was calling for webb to make returns and to start as Cb look how long it finally took for John to make the move this is the same situation , have the talent just need to pull the trigger. David Reed WR let's try him out , get him in practice catching ball and returning.Prince Miller i think he's on the practice squad now is the time for him to shine pull the trigger.Mason no way we need him as WR.
Also forgot about WR- Marcus Smith #11 he's our 3rd string Wr behind TJ. i was looking at his stats and in college he was KOR specialist, he had something like 28 returns for like 680 yrd that's pretty good. Now i know that was in college but the mans our 3rd string sitting there getting a check doing nothing put him in coach ,get him in practice make the move ,pull the trigger.

Not so fast. Let me step in for a bit.

He was our number 1 receiver those years with an already thin receiving group behind him. We didn't need to take risks like that. Not only that, we were already pretty good on special teams. He may have offered then too, just the risk to the reward was not worth it.
That was my point. We stink now so he wants to help out.

I also doubt Mason didn't want to return kicks in years prior simply out of fear of getting hurt. It's the coaches that think like that, not the players.

Good try but my narcissism tells me I still win.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh made Boldin return kicks, he ticks all the boxes, for one he's a starter, and two, he's not a specialist returner.

How about the character and selflessness of Derrick Mason, willing to risk his health this late in his career for the benefit of the team, when we've already got all these young guys who theoretically could do the job. This is why he's one of my favorite players.

Personally though, I am kind of against it. I think he's far too valuable on offense. He has the best hands of any of our receivers, and can keep his feet in bounds when you wouldn't think it was possible. People have said we have the depth on offense to risk Mason's health, I strongly disagree. Derrick Mason is irreplaceable on this offense, and we do not have a lot of talent behind him. Losing him to injury would leave Housh as a starter. No thanks, he drops enough passes as a third receiver.

Eh I'd say Boldin has the best hands IMO. He is a natural hands catcher it seems. But Mason has route running and sideline catches on him though.

Agreed, Boldin catches with his hands, Mason with his body.

....and D-Will use to catch with his mind.

I'd let him. If he wants to get more involved, then absolutely. I'm not gonna sit here and say I know how good a punt returner he was at Tennessee but a lot of you fans are saying he was really good, and if he has prior experience he has to be better than Zibby, not to mention that Zibby has his foot injury. Let him go at it

Mason has had a history of returning kicks and punts, but that is a while back. I think we have some other people on the team who wouldn't mind returning. Like: Stallworth,David Reed,or even Nakamura. Give other people a chance to shine, we need Mason for his reliabilty.

Quite frankly, at this point I would Like to see anyone that can actually catch a punt, make a good decision, and run north with the ball. We sorely need a punt and a kick-off returner NOW! Someone needs to step up

Derrick is still the go-to guy for Flacco. Let Stalworth take returns
Actually, the numbers show that Anquan Boldin has been Flacco's go-to guy this year. Derrick Mason's numbers are comparable to Todd Heap's numbers, which isn't a bad thing, to say the least.

Mase has already expressed his willingness to return punts (Coach alluded to it after the Bills
game). He also said while he may make some changes to the return game, he was sure Mase would be
his first choice. What it does show is there are no egos on the team and everyone is willing to do
whatever it takes to win.

I haven't seen anything from Boldin that says he has better hands than Mason (durability, strength, speed, sure), but I digress as that wasn't really the point of my post.

Durability? Isn't that Q's big thing, how he hasn't played 16 games in forever?
Ssshhhh....we don't talk about that around here.

With Boldin on the field Derrick should be having a killer year.
He's not having a killer year, but still a very solid year. Very reliable, and if he does return kicks, there's a stronger possibility IMO of him getting injured. Still I'd like for him to get a crack at it.

I'd say Heap is getting the best out of the presence of Boldin because the attention that isn't being paid to him must be focused on Mason, since teams know they can't afford to keep him one-on-one
