McNabb Benched?

47 posts in this topic

Mike was even saying Gross gave them a better chance of winning. I think he misused the word winning; it should be Gross gave us a better chance of failing...lol

McNabb is the guy that actually makes the Redskins looked at least alive this year.

PS: People need to give McNabb a real respect....I love the guy but not the Redskins....

McNabb isn't even the problem. It's their O-line and lack of recievers.

Yep, Suh was owning the Redskins O-line.

Shanahan :34853_doh:

I'm glad his little move blew up in his face on the first play. If he was trying to send a message, it was received loud and clear: he didn't want to win that game. If he did, McNabb would have stayed in.

Sug made some big plays plays but I was just as impressed with Vanden Bosch, Williams and Avril. They were all over McNabb as a unit.

I was a bit jealous...

As for McNabb getting benched, I think it pretty guarantees he won't there be back in DC next season.

I wish we have some decent QB pressure like they do :(

Then the Redskins will be back to its old form. For the sake of it, Shanahan might as well not going back next year.

PS: Arizona might sell out big to get McNabb at least couple years if he happpens to be FA next year.

That was the dumbest move ever, and everyone but Shanahan knows it. I don't know what he was thinking, but he got what he deserved with it blowing up in his face on the very first play.

So than I guess that would make this trade pretty even then? I mean the Eagles have no idea who their QB is, one week it's Kolb and the next it's Vick. That's where the McNabb trade hurts Philly but seeing today, with McNabb being benched this trade helped nobody.

I saw the first quarter when defenses absolutely dominated. Then left for family business, and when I returned and saw the final score, I was like how did this game end up so high scoring? lol

And when I found out that McNabb had been taken out of the game, I thought wow he must've really gotten injured in the beating he took. But no, it was Shanahan being really stupid. And look what happened :o

Donovan Mcnabb has conducted himself as a professional through 11 years as an athlete, most of them dealing with the Philly fans/press, T.O., Rush Limbaugh and now coach Shanahan. He has always kept himself above the fray; even tempered and measured in his response and never presenting himself as anything other than a "team leader. He deserves better...and the Skins deserve Rex Grossman.

There's nothing that Shanahan says that can justify this move, even with Grossman's supposed handle on the two-minute offense. When was the last time that Grossman actually won a (significant) game running a two-minute drill?? You'd have to go back to his Chicago days, and it may not even have been during their Super Bowl-berth season.

McNabb may have played up-and-down all year, but a lot of that has to do with his offensive line, as stated earlier. Furthermore, McNabb is the guy that had the Redskins out to a lead earlier in the game, and he's also the guy that still managed to keep the Redskins within a possession when he was benched. It's one thing to bench your starter after a turnover-riddled outing, but McNabb threw only one interception, so there was no real justification to make the change.

Shanahan, as a veteran coach, should know by now that a quarterback change isn't as simple as sliding someone else in under center; the rhythm of the offense immediately changes, starting with the center-to-QB exchange, and trickling down to the handoffs and timing with the WRs. This was possibly the most puzzling move all weekend, if not all season thus far.

While I see many of you bashing Shannhan for the stupid move, it can be justified a bit. First, the Redskins O-Line did not help McNabb one bit, but after watching every drive the Redskins had, McNabb looked confused with routes and play calls. He made tons of bad passes thinking a guy was suppose to go 'thataway'.

While I still think it was a stupid move, I understand Shannahan's concern that McNabb just wasn't understanding the system and didn't trust him when the game was on the line.

A message has been served to McNabb which might prove more valuable in the long term. McNabb wants a contract, he got benched when the game was still on the line, if that doesn't put a fire under his but, nothing will. McNabb obviously needs to study harder.

I completely disagree. You can send a message to McNabb but you don't send that message when there is two minutes left in the game and you STILL have a chance to win. You send that message in the 2nd quarter or 3rd quarter even but not on the final drive of the game.

Exactly. The Redskins were only down by 6. Immediately after Shanahan's decision, they were down 12. If that's not a sign that you royally screwed up, I don't know what is. Shanahan made a huge error, he and McNabb aren't long for that team..

I don't think that the move was to specifically send a message. I think the message was an acceptable afterthought.

McNabb was not comprehending the routes and the play calls out there. Lots of miscommunication on McNabb's end. I truly believe that they thought that Rex had a great grasp of Shannahan's two minute offense to help them out. Since he is in his second year of it. It backfired. What's left is a message that was sent to McNabb.

I don't agree with the move, I don't. Leave McNabb out there. I just sort of understand what they were thinking, in their sick way.

I can see your point of view on this but the fact that Shanahan even thought about pulling McNabb (let alone actually doing so) is just ridiculous in this case. I agree McNabb looked a bit lost and they were really lacking anything on offense but the fact that you're only down 6 with a chance to win gives Shanahan no reason to pull McNabb there. I don't honestly believe for one minute that Grossman is better at a 2-minute drill than McNabb.

Bottom line is Shanahan really screwed up here.

I don't think any of this was McNabb's fault though!!! What is he suppose to do when he has no one open and theres 4 guys in his face? He can't do it all. Bench the O-line, not McNabb.
On another note. How funnnyy was Rex Grossman's first play in?! Ndamukong Suh was cracking me up!

I disagree I think it was a combination of 1)O-Line 2)Lack of run game 3) Coaching up of McNabb AND 4) McNabb's lack of understanding of the offensive system.

So while it wasn't McNabb's fault by any means. His understanding of the calls being made was not there. He was chucking balls to different routes. If it happens once or twice it can be attributed to miscommunication but McNabb made errors like that often in yesterday's game. Shannahan eluded to it this morning questioning McNabb's work ethic. McNabb is relying upon his pure athletic ability and at his age you need to put more work in to get a grasp of a new system.

This picture says it all about what McNabb had to deal with:

Yeah, he got punished during the part of the game for which I was awake. I don't understand why Shanny thought Grossman would do better.
