Troy Smith Named As Starter For 49ers

134 posts in this topic

Really? One game against a soft Broncos defense and Troy Smith is somehow dubbed the better quarterback? The 9ers played with the same gameplan as we did: pound the ball and have your QB make a few plays to win. Let's see a few more games out of the guy before we start his coronation as best QB in NFL history. As of now, Flacco is the FAR SUPERIOR quarterback. There is absolutely no doubt about it.

I'm just adding one thing to this... I was watching that Wembley game yesterday, and if Flacco had thrown that crazy improvised Hail Mary pass that Troy pulled of just before running it in for a 1-yard score, these boards (including me) would have been brying over Flacco's poor decision making... He really shouldn't have gotten away with that one, and really, really shouldn't ave thrown it... For those who haven't seen this play, Troy was scrambling out of the pocket to his own right, signals for his receiver to go deep, and the just throws a floater out there and somehow the receiver comes down with it... The coverage Smith so wisely decides to throw against? B-Dawk AND Champ... How that wasn't an intercception is beyond me...

why do you say he was arrogant and full of bravado?
I remember in college he got labeled for that, but didnt see that when he was with us.
Um...in the middle of the playoffs he comes out with "I want to be traded so I can be a starter like I should be". Yep. Arrogance.

It was good to see Troy do well, but it's foolish to think he was the answer here the past two years. If you love Troy so much, and hate Flacco, root for the 49ers because Joe is here to stay!

He may not of had an amazing game, but dont take anything away from him. He had a good game and showed he can win as a starter. I think he is better than Alex. Good luck in the future Troy, hope you keep that starting job.

Against the same Bronco D who let the Ravens throw and run all over them. The same Bronco D who gave up 50+ points in 3qtrs vs the RAIDERS. Raiders had to put their 3rd string in just to stop scoring. Smith played well but he wont beat a real team with that performance.

Yea the Broncos D is flailing. It was holding its own at the beginning of the season but with additional injuries and the season pressing on. They are struggling.

Go Troy! you got snubbed here in Baltimore. Alot of people said well Flacco got us to this and that when it is quite untrue for the 08 season. Show em what you got Troy Smith, I will be keeping my out for you and cheering for you to prove our FO wrong. Neg me if you want people but he never got a legitimate chance in Baltimore

Here we go again...

How in the world did Troy get snubbed? Better question, how exactly didn't he get a "legitimate chance"? He started two games at the end of the '07 season, was in line to start in '08 but went down with an illness. Then, the team inserted Joe, a first round draft and who they paid a ton of money to, and he played well enough for the team to get to the AFC title game. What, should the Ravens have benched Joe once Troy got healthy so he could start?

The moment Joe was drafted in '08, he was the future of this team and luckily, circumstances allowed him to play from day one and prove why the team selected him in the draft.

Really if Troy Smith was all that, he wouldnt have been being outplayed by Boller in the preseason that year. And really would Troy Smith be winning some of these games Flacco has orchestrated this year? Seriously, would he have put up 30+ to save the day against Buffalo, would he have drove down in a minute 40 yards on the #1 scoring defense? Like really people, would Troy Smith have thrown for 250 yards against the Jets on opening night MNF at the Jets new stadium?

Class act? he hated it here. He always had a chip like he deserved better and would complain about game time and missing Ohio blah blah etc etc.

Good riddance, hope you like losing seasons.

Fair enough. But they still contributed $30 million to him over 5 years which is more of a commitment than a 5th round pick.

Troy's shot was at the end of '07 and in pre-season of '08. He got unlucky with the illness but the Ravens didn't screw him as many seem to believe.

Even so, that only bolsters Flacco's case and weakens Smith's..

Wait a minute, why are we STILL debating this?! Troy Smith is gone. Flacco is the better quarterback, by far. Troy had his shot, he didn't do it..

Agreed.

Troy started those games in Miami (where we lost to the winless Dolphins) and Pittsburgh.

It's not Baltimore's fault he got ill at the most inopportune time. It's not Baltimore's fault that Joe came out of the gates his rookie year and impressed enough to keep his starting job after Smith was healthy enough to play. It would have been foolish for the team to tell Joe "Sorry, we know you've been playing pretty well so far, but we have to give Troy a chance to win the starting job. So we're going to have a competition this week.".

Smith was never snubbed, he was purely a victim of circumstances.

Actually, he came off the bench against the Dolphins but he was unable to lead a game-winning drive. He did start against the Seahawks though and the Ravens lost that game.

Ah, you're right. My bad, guess my attempt to forget about that game worked better than I thought.

wow, people are still debating over the release of Troy Smith?

Troy Smith's lovers can join 49er fanbase....

PS: I love Troy but Baltimore gave him a chance but he blew it. He might not work for Baltimore system but he might fit well for the 49ers. However, it's too early to tell he can continue winning in San Francisco. We'll see...

Troy Smith is the best QB in the NFL!!!

Kanye was about to say that, but he got interrupted by Troy Smith, who then called himself the best QB of all time.

Hilarious, so every single mistake that Flacco makes will be evidence against him, and everything that Troy does well will show how we missed out on a great QB. This is gonna be a fun thread to watch.

6 Pages for a guy who couldn't beat Kyle Boller, showed nothing at the end of 2007 and someone who couldn't even beat Marc Bulger for the 2nd spot on the depth chart.... Troy Smith fan boys need to just accept that Joe is our Franchise QB and big whoop he beat the Broncos.. Joe beat them twice! Now the 49ers schedule is soft the rest of the way minus GB and SD. So if Troy can actually keep his job in the off-season than let's talk about Troy, but not right now.

Hate to be picky but he under-threw the ball to Crabtree, who had to come back for it, a good corner would have made the play.

I'm not saying nor this discussion be about Troy and the Ravens, thats all in the past. I'm not saying he got screwed here, he had his chances. All I'm saying is he has showen with that game he can win in this league, even if it was against the Broncos D. They still are a professional defense. Now being able to do that and do it consistantly is the question. I believe that Troy is better than Alex, but than again i believe Alex isnt very good.

BTW i dont think troy smith hated it here, he just wanted to go to a place where he had a chance to start. Who wouldnt.

You all should live down in the Bay Area, all I hear is how Troy Smith is going to bring the Niners back for the bottom of the NFL . Everything I hear is either about Troy Smith or the Giants winning the World Series.

Anyway, Troy won't do good in SF most likely although it is still technicly possible. I wish him luck but I still doubt him becoming a regular NFL starter.
