G35X Vs 328Xi

26 posts in this topic

As most on here know (and saw), I totaled my baby/toy after the NE game. I was so upset due to the loss, that I rammed my car into a pole at about 55.

I have the truck as m DD, CJ for the nice weather days and HAD a 745i as my weekend ride.

Well, time to replace the 7. I'm a long time BMW enthusiast, so the 328xi is screaming my name, but I can get a G35x with more/all options for less than the BMW.

What are the car guys thoughts here?

Gotta go with the BMW, dude.

That's what I'm thinking, but the 306hp compared to the 328xi's 230hp is playing games with me....

The Bimmer gets you free maintenance for the first 60k IIRC. The VQ engine in the Infin. is a very durable power plant and packs a nice punch. It really depends on the total cost of ownership, insurance costs, fuel milage ETC. The only thing I don't like about the 3 is that the styling is pretty plain.

edit: sounds like you're buying used, so you could probably get a better deal on the G.

Yeah, buying used.....never purchased new for value reasons. It makes no sense in my opinion.

Test driving a few G's on Friday, so we'll see.

I'm a BMW guy myself, but lets call it like it is...that G35 is the smart pick. That said, if you dont look back at your car when you're walking away from it, then why buy it?

Flynismo is a BMW guy? That feels/sounds like an oxymoron... :)

You're a car guy; if you don't mind, please go into more detail as to why the G35x is the smart pick.

Thanks!

Yeah, haha, my username is in memory of my first love...was a 1993 Nissan 300ZX. Was a non-turbo 2+2; I swapped in the vg30dett twin turbo motor (from the twin turbo Z), had it putting down 388 hp @ the wheels on just 8psi; at 20psi it was making over 540 hp, but I never ran the boost that high. Painted it Ferrari Yellow, Tein electronic adjustable coilovers, Brembos front and rear, pretty sick interior...was leaving the stadium after our loss to the Colts in the playoffs, and some girl yells at me 'That whip is fly!' .... lol... so after a horrible day, that made me smile, and ever since then, I remember that car as my fly nismo...

had to get rid of it because I have three boys now, I sold it and bought a 2008 Mercedes C320. New Years Day of this year I totaled it; my best friend died and I fractured my skull...loved that car but I could never get into one again; not the best memories...besides, was always a BMW guy at heart..

</rant>

So why do I think the G35 is the smart pick? I've actually driven both of those cars while shopping for a replacement for the C320. There's nothing tremendously enlightening that I can tell you that you cant find out on your own, but looking at the two on paper, the G35 is much better value for the dollar. After driving those two cars, it confirmed everything I already figured...the G35 is just more fun to drive. As you probably already guessed, it's quite a bit faster than the Bimmer. But the surprising part for me was that it handles like a champ too; easily on the same level as the Bimmer. The only real reason I can think of to get the 328 is if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain/snow/ice. Other than that, G35 is just better, IMO.

For what it's worth, I ended up getting a 2007 BMW 335i. Not even close. I'd recommend taking a long, hard look at one if you're not dead set on either the G35 or 328.

That's what I am driving. I looked at both of the above before buying the G8. The G8 is the best bang for the buck!
And with an intake, exhaust, and tune you're over 450 hp.

The 335 would put the power in favor of the Bimmer but the price tag is going to be close to 30k for a used one. Are you set in 4 doors?

I have a 2 door truck and a 2 door CJ with a 401 V8, so, yes, I need a 4 door for this one.

Fly- I thought about the 335, but Im looking to stay under $20k on this purchase....between my wife and I, we have 5 cars (well, 4 plus whatever I buy to replace the 7). Also, so sorry to hear about your accident and loss.

Have you test driven a G8GT? They handle very similarly to the other two, have better second row seating, and that 6.0L V8 torque is just SWEET!

Or how about an S60R even? I chose one previously over a 330i and and G35..at the time.

thanks, its not an easy thing to live with, he was family to me and my brother...

So, basically you are looking for a sedan under $20k?
There's so many great options if you dont mind a car in the 5-7 year range.
I would have recommended an e46 M3, but its a coupe.
I think a great car for you would be an Audi A8 or an S4 (I saw an S4 on craigslist in baltimore for 19k over the summer...good luck finding one). The A8 would be real easy to talk the wife into agreeing with lol...
Another car I'd consider is a Mercedes CLK430 from the early to mid 2000s.
Or if thats not your cup of tea, you cant go wrong with an STi!,,,,,,,,

some of them definitely are (i happen to think the 328 that 1/28/01 was looking at is one of them), but my main beef with Bimmers is how sickenly expensive they are to maintain. I have two of them, one is a 1993 740iL ... I just paid $350 to replace the transmission fluid and filter on that car

Yikes! Have you ever seen how expensive it is to repair any of those?
The STi is a bit too boy racer for anyone past 30 imo.

But, to each their own. ;)

Yeah, I agree about the STi being boy racer, but the value is wicked! AWD, tons of speed/power, and impress all the 16 year olds that hang out in Sheetz parking lots lol... No one buys those things and keeps it stock, it's not hard to tone down the look of the car (or rice the crap outta it)...take off the wing and replace the hood with something more conservative, and they're pretty good looking cars. And yep, I know how bad the maintenance costs are on those cars (borderline robbery), but figured since he was looking at getting another Bimmer anyway, it wouldn't be a huge deal..

Okay, so the G35x's power and handling impressed me big time!! Leaning that direction.

I'll post pics when I buy something.

The jeep is the scariest vehicle I own.....fiberglass body and a 401...uh oh!!

In all seriousness, the G has completely changed from 2006 to 2007. Can't wait to find the exact one I want (no real hurry since I own a used car lot at home).
