Uncharacteristic Defense

7 posts in this topic

Im not going to say that the Ravens defense is playing bad, just atypically. They rarely give up a lead in the fourth quarter, and we've seen it twice in the last two weeks. After we took a big "L" from the Patriots, I thought our defense would take their anger out on the Bills. Instead we surrendered over 500 yards!! Buffalo's recievers were constantly getting behind our DB's. Even though our secondary admitted to playing a poor game, its hard to blame them when the QB has over 4 seconds to throw the ball. Suggs is playing his butt off but he's only one man. I understand they've played a lot of physical games, but Im hoping they play solid after the bye week so we don't have to rely on one or two big plays at the end of the game. What could we do to amp up this pass rush and get this defense rolling again?

There's nothing that we can really do other than execute. Mattison's defense relies on getting pressure from the D-Line. His schemes don't cover up the weaknesses in our secondary. When everyone plays well we're a great defense. When someone is struggling it's blatantly obvious and we suffer the consequences.

I feel like Kindle would've helped out the pass rush quite a bit... :(

Well I was thinking about making my own topic about this, but anyway here goes.

As Harbaugh said, our pass rush was actually not that bad last game. Fitzpatrick was just getting the ball out too fast. Aside from the TD on Webb, it's been mostly Washington who they were throwing to. This is probably why our defensive schemes didn't work. They knew the key to beating the blitz...

Washington is getting abused on 3rd downs and blitzes because he doesn’t cover tight. We need Josh Wilson to play on more of these downs because he’s physical and has tight coverage.

Ed needs to be in the backfield more than blitzing. I like him all over the field, but clearly our outside CB’s need help over the top. He’ll get a pick way before he’ll get a sack, and just him being there should prevent a lot of deep balls.

We need to focus on our corners matching up with the right guy. Webb should not be covering a vet because, as we saw with Deion Branch, they’ll get the best of him every once in a while. Washington should not be covering a physical receiver if he’s not going to be physical himself. When he is, he gets pass deflections like crazy (combined 7 in two games this season). He needs to win at the line of scrimmage rather than playing off the man. Fabian is blazing fast. Why’s he playing so conservatively?

Carr needs to be utilized more. Some people still have a bias that Carr isn’t a good corner. However, it’s no surprise that the less Carr has been on the field, the worse our secondary has done. He’s not that fast, but this guy can blanket a Welker-like receiver. In fact he has a pick on a pass intended for Welker.

Our next pass D concern is that our LB’s, it appears, cannot cover. Ray can deliver a good hit, but aside from that there are too many catches over the middle. This is where Dawan Landry needs to step up. For a guy who went into training camp with some vicious hits, I haven’t seen any big hits by him. Instead I’ve seen hit aim low and miss. What’s wrong? I also don't think 'Ruki is a good guy to cover a TE. He's just not powerful enough to win the position battle and step in front.

I'm not trying to whine here, but I think this will be seen to during the bye. Our 3- or 4-man rushes are too slow to make sufficient pressure so I think there will be a lot of time devoted to developing new, more effective blitz plays that get some sacks chalked up. I remember somebody saying in the offseason, no corner is good when the QB has time enough. Admittedly, Washington was burned twice for TDs and he wasn't the only one, but they have chips on their shoulders now and I think they want to prove a point.

Pass rush was bad with Trevor Pryce, pass rush is bad without Trevor Pryce.. Not seeing much of a difference.
