Ed Reed, And Lardarius Webb As Punt Returners?

35 posts in this topic

As you may have all read, Reed, and Webb are being considered in the Punt Return game. I personally don't think this is a very good idea, Webb, and Reed are both coming off serious surgeries, for some major injuries. The last thing either of these two need, is 250 pound line backers diving at their ankles and knees with a 50 yard running start. Personally I'd like to give Josh WIlson another chance, sure he fumbled but everyone makes mistakes, and he was obviously too eager to make an impact and fought for yards that weren't there. He will have learned from this mistake and should do a much better job if given the chance.

I agree with not allowing Webb or Reed, but Wilson is a KR, not PR.

well I know KR and PR aren't interchangeable but I think Josh could do both as (correct me if I'm wrong) he's not starting, so he has fresh enough legs. He's got nice elusiveness from the video I've seen, he could be our less talented version of Devin Hester.

Would Parmele be better suited for PR and Wilson for KR?
I personally don't really like Parmele so far in the KR game, he hits the hole if its there nicely, but he doesnt have the quickness to find one if it isn't set up right in front of him.

I mean, the players are always gonna wanna contribute. And if the coaches think they are healthy enough to, by all means go a head and do it. There is always risk to get injury in the NFL no matter the position. Since Webb is playing special teams anyways I rather it him than Reed. Then again, Reed moves through defenders like Mufasa through a pack of wilderbeast.

Wilson has never returned a punt in the NFL though.

While I wouldn't mind seeing him get another shot at returning kicks, I think David Reed deserves a shot too.

At punt returner, I honestly don't know why Haruki hasn't gotten a shot. You're telling me a guy who does this can't provide a spark?

Never even considered that, yeah in that clip he showed excellent elusiveness, and vision, maybe not elite speed, but not too shabby

The man is a play-maker; he returned punts at Cincinnati too.

With KR, you typically have a wall set up infront of you, that leads you down the field, and as your blockers get taken out you have to redirect the path you take upfield. With PR, your defenders are typically running side by side with the people they are supposed to block, and there isnt really a wall set up, and holes can show up anywhere (obviously they try and set them up in certain places but this rarely happens, as the punt unti is taught to fight pressure and get to the side that they are being pushed away from). Some people just have a knack for one and not another, mind you we always think of devin hester who is a king at both.

Not an astronomical difference, but in the NFL small differences look huge on gameday

No and no. We already were without Reed for the first six games of the season and Webb for the end of last year. I want to take as few chances with ANY starters returning punts and kickoffs as possible. David Reed did it in college, let him try a few. Maybe Josh Wilson, though I don't want to use any members of our secondary if we don't have to. We're loaded at running back, let Jalen Parmele return punts and kickoffs. If that's the one weakness of our team, I won't lose any sleep over it.

the only problem is field position is like 50% of the battle, even if the KR onnly gets it to the 35. Its the fact that he got 15 more yards than he should have, as the goal is to pin him inside the 20. And defenses feel more pressure, and its demoralizing seeing someone slash up the side lines making people miss and run into each other.

It's frustrating enough watching Parmele return kick-offs. He won't and shouldn't be returning punts.

Could Stallworth coming back be the answer to our Punt Return problems? He might be ... Has he ever returned kicks?

Harbaugh has hinted Stallworth could see work as a punt returner. He did it in pre-season.

I'm pretty sure he's returned kicks as a pro.

welcome to the family my friend, and yeah Stallworth is projected to come back after the bye, and David Reed was being talked about all pre season with regards to him returning kicks, but thus far haven't even seen him back there.

Heart sunk? My knees gave out!! I'm not second guessing their ability to do it and do it well. However the thought of loosing them again keeps me up at night. I'm not sure I could survive the stress.

I'm all for giving Stallworth a shot at both KR and PR as I don't expect him to see the field much as a WR given all the other options we have. It's pretty obvious that nobody that we've put out there so far has given us much if any spark.

I heard it at the game... I almost had a nervous breakdown. Ed Reed returning punts is exciting but I think it is too risky. I just think that it is so sad that we have no other guys to do it so they had to put Reed out there because they know he will make the right call.

Why's everyone against Parmele? He looks good at KR, I mean I can't recall three times he failed to return the ball to the 30 yard line or a time that he's fumbled.

And I have no idea on earth why they put Ed in for PR after he visibly hurt his leg. I have never questioned the judgment of Ozzie, Harbs, Cam, Rex, or Mattison (I hate Monday Morning QBs) but I definitely have to question the decision to have an injured Reed (who limped onto the field) return a punt. I think Nakamura or Stallworth could be good PRs, and for some reason I think Zibby had some good flashes in the past (barring against NYJ) and I would like to see him back.

People are against Parmele because he isn't very explosive but consistently comes out of the end-zone even he fields the ball three yards dee.

Browns cut Yamon Figurs. Good move to go get him?
You can't be serious. Have you forgotten him being afraid to get hit two years ago against the Cowboys?

There's a story out front that says Derrick Mason has been lobbying to return kicks:

Yamon Figurs hasnt been the same ever since he got blown up on a return during the Colts game in 2008(I think it was 2008) Ever since then he gets scared every time he's about to run into contact. Where's a health (and young) BJ Sams when you need him :(
