Coach-to-defense Communication Approved

28 posts in this topic

Finally, Ray Ray or Ed Reed (and another player in case of substitution) will be able to communicate with Coach Ryan from the sidelines just like QBs do! I am happy this proposal passed because there really was no reason for it not to pass and our guys on defense finally get some rules in their favor because past rule changes (such as illegal contact, etc.) have ALL favored the offense, but now the playing field (literally, no pun intended) has been leveled!

thank goodness for this...

This could very well be revolutionary of how teams run their defenses. I can see teams assigning "field generals" on defense giving them more responsibilities and keeping them on the field longer. Pretty soon the NFL will be littered with these field generals and the demand for them dramatically rises eventually leading to the renaming/creation of a position on defense.

ok maybe it won't change that much but it sure reminds of when I was a little kid and we use to have walkie talkie wars playing Capture The Flag.

I cant believe coaches would actually vote against it. But I do like how often Ravens were mentioned in the article.

WITH THIS HEADSET ED REED AND RAY CAN SEE PLAYS COMING FROM MILES AWAY WHICH WILL MEAN MORE TAKLES FOR THE WHOLE TEAM

How so? The only on the field benefit is that the coach can get the play to the defense without having their signals picked up by the other team.

I read somewhere (possibly B-more sun) that Reed will probably be the primary communicator, not Lewis.

One reason cited was that because Lewis is hitting players on almost every play, and that might damage the headset.

I think Reed calls all the audibles anyways though. He wears one of those wrist bands with all the plays on it like the QB does.

I think I've seen Ray wearing one of those, too.

But I've also seen Ray come off the field on the rare occasion, whereas Reed doesn't, so I think Reed would still be the logical choice.

It's somewhat ironic that Ed Reed is getting the headset over Ray Lewis with one of the reasons being that constant, hard-hitting tackles could damage the equipment, given that Reed is one of the hardest-hitting safeties in the league. ^_^

I think its a lesser of two evils, so to say. Ray makes contact with another player literally every play because if he doesnt get the tackle he's one of the first blocks that need to be picked up. So, I guess the thought is there will be some times when the play is stopped before it gets to Ed and he doesnt have much contact to where Ray is always right in the thick of things. Thats the only thing I can think of because your right Ed isnt hitting people softly. T.J. Houshmanzadah will tell you that.

i think that this is a good call on all sides of the equation...because its now not a complete one sided deal with only the offense getting the Mic.....now both sides will get/wear the mic....in which (i feel), can only lead to bigger and better success and overall praise from the Football world abroad. i think that now with this addition, there will be alot less confusion and panic throughout the defense and ther will be more of a leadership quality established and implified to a certain extent.....

Why couldnt they have done this earlier in the 2006 season. Oh well. Hopefully thisll pan out a lot better for our defense. Not that our defense is already good. Itll make them even better without having to look on the sidelines where the signals are being called.

yes i amust agree...fantastic article...thanks for sharing! :D i think Ryans Quote about the offense not being able to steel the Defense's signals and play calling, i think that this decision (like i previously said earlier on) that it now even's the playing field only that much further and makes the game only that much more a thrill to watch, because its now basically going to be power house versus Power house, Offensive Communication vs Defensive Communication.....it'll be fun to see how it all un-folds .

yea especially cause all the team has to do is listen... I mean its not like they dont listen already. But itll come quicker without having to read the Defense Coaches signals then being said by whos reading it.. If our team does it like that I mean..

i get what you saying.....this decision allows/offers a new and quicker perspective on the way defenses will be run for the future. simply meaning that, the defense will be able to get plays off alot quicker than not and will be able to make quicker decsions than not..especially when its really really does count. it also will allow their to be a lesser amount of mistakes and penalties which means better concentration will be a top priority and in which will mean better overall performances from all players alike...the end result? better performances, making for a better outcome more often than not.

i mean it can only benefit our team from this point forward......the better communication will offer a better perspective and offer a better look into what's happening/going on through the player's eye's themsevles....because they are the one's out on the field and thus the information they can relay back to the sidelines is or will be crucial to the games final outcome. the offense has had this type of strategy over the defense for a number of years and now its a new dawn upon a new era of football....one to which will be more defined and better rounded because both sides of the football will be able to relay the vital game day information right then and there as its happening and team will be able to adjust accordingly.

thus the outcome can and will be somewhat altered for the better of the two teams out there....plus it will surely make for more closer contests out there and it will really test the sidelines ability to coach its players to the best of their ability and put their players in the best position possible on the field.
