NFL Blackout Rules

14 posts in this topic

Sorry to bug everyone with a slightly off-topic question, but it is relevant to the Ravens. I live in College Park (Redskins country, unfortunately) and I have for a few years now and I know that whenever the Redskins and Ravens play at the same time the Redskins block out the Ravens game, so I'd have to go out to watch the game or head home to Bmore... but I had thought this was limited to only 2-3 times a season for whatever reason.

I was taking a look at the Redskins schedule and the rest of their season they play all 1:00 games which is mostly when the Ravens play so I was wondering if all of the Ravens games at the same time will be blocked out in my viewing area, or if only a certain number of them will. It's a little bit inconvenient but it's not a huge deal.

Thanks.

Oh and when I looked up NFL Blackout rules it had some crap about whether or not the game is sold out... I don't know it was all pretty confusing.

Blackout rules are different from media coverage areas.

What you are talking about is media coverage. Games will not be shown in your area if both the Ravens and Redskins play at home at the same time. If that is the case, you won't see the game.

I looked at it in past and I think there are 1 or 2 more games that fit that criteria. But then again a game could always be flexed.

Ahh, I wasn't aware that the rule was when both teams play @ home.. that makes a lot of sense. Thank you! So the only games that wont air here in theory are Tampa Bay and Cincy (same as Denver). I hate being in a Skins dominated area... yuck, especially when their fans mistakenly believe they are as good as the Ravens.

Dan, I feel your pain!!

Watch out for when Channel 9 has a rare opportunity to air a game played by Redskin rivals (NFC EAST). I have regularly seen Channel 9 go with one of those games instead of our "secondary market" Ravens.

SOOO close... but sometime still seems so far away.

Of course, Channel 13's antenna is so directional-ized that I can't even get a signal just 45 miles away. I COULD before they moved it, back when I canceled Direct Tv ST. :(

I wonder if this black-out rule is in place to subsidize the local bars that show all games. I'd much rather spend the $50 I have to pay for me and my wife to sit in a loud, REDSKINS filled bar directly to the NFL to enable me to enjoy it at home.

Regards from Northern VA,

C

To be honest the Redskins have the best team they have had in years just like us. They are a good team if all the pieces fall into place they could win their division as well.

I live in Newark, DE and I get WJZ-13's signal over my antenna just fine -- and I'm 50 miles away, give or take. That's not even factoring in all the terrain in the way.

Franchise,

Yes, but when they moved frequencies for the DTV transition, their antenna is now located south of Baltimore and it directionally beams North. Apparently, it keeps their frequency from overlapping one in Western MD, thus, keeps us completely protected under Daniel Snyder's jurisdiction :(

Perfekt,

I guest they ARE doing good as all the car flags are waving on both sides even thought the season is almost halfway in. Once again, Skins fans bring out their "how can you possibly like anyone else, fool!?" mentality.

Alas, other than that, I like where I live and work.

What he said.

I'm at UMD, too, Dan I feel your pain. Luckily, though, I got to attend the Broncos instead of watching the 'Skins back here.

@Christobal- it's pretty annoying to go to BWW or other local bars to see it FILLED with redskins fans who can easily watch the game at home... not to mention how obnoxious they can be (not trying to be a hater, but many skins fans I know act so entitled for no reason whatsoever). Hopefully WUSA9 doesn't pull anything like that but it wouldn't shock me, unfortunately i do go to school in Redskins' country

@berad- Nice! I'm tryna go to the Saints game in December, but I'm happy to know there'll only be one or two more games that are blocked out... but it's all good, I just have to go to a bar or home to watch the Ravens.

@macbrack- Thanks, that site is terrific!

i always felt UMD should be in a neutral location. It's just makes it seem like maryland is a suburb of DC when that's not the case.

and with that said...it is UMD, why would skin fans dominate the local bars unlesses it's filled with locals? UMD can't be filled with people from the DC area as it is the flagship school for the entire state.

and with that said I live in PG county....you can find some Ravens fans in montgomery county. but PG county is either redskins or cowboys. I'm from b-more county but now I live in PG county....DO people serious not move between the cities that often? When i go to work...it seems like an anomaly that i moved to the area from b-more county. weird!

I always thought it would be as well before coming to school here, but we're only about 15-20 mins from DC whereas Baltimore is a good 30-35. i guess "technically" DC is in Maryland if it would be part of any state... and the local bars have a good mix of fans (in fact my roommate is a Titans fan, another friend of mine is a Panthers fan, another is a Packers fan, etc.) but Redskins 1st and Ravens 2nd are the most noticeable whenever I'm out watching games, which makes sense. plus there are a TON of people from Jersey down here so a lot of Jets (and a few Giants) fans as well. a good number of Eagles fans too...

That's funny, I'm from Baltimore county myself... there are a number of Ravens fans here but you're absolutely right that locals mostly support Cowboys and Skins.
