Helmet-To-Helmet Rule

Helmet-To-Helmet Hits   11 members have voted

  1. 1. Should the guilty party be suspended without pay until the injured player returns to action; even if it's a season ending injury?

If I was fined 10% of my earnings I'd clean up my act for damn sure. After that there are suspensions without pay.
[/quote]

Sorry for my thick and incredibly heavy cynicism. I feel, for guys like Meriweather and Harrison, only suspensions will have any sort of impact.

Robinson's hit on Jackson, while certainly vicious, was a legal hit. He hit him in the chest with his shoulder. The force of the impact made it look worse, hence the fine.

Harrison is, by his own admission, a dirty player, and his acts have no place in this league. To say that you are trying to hurt other players (but not "injure") is just plain ignorant. I'd like to see him go over the middle once against Ray Ray or another LB or Safety. His attitude might change a bit then.

Meriweather's hit was also dirty and inexcusable. Big hits are part of the game, but his intent was evident on that play and I think it was an offense worthy of a suspension.

You need to learn how to read between the lines. Harrison is not an eloquent speaker, but I don't think there's any question about what he was trying to say and it's been said many ways over the years. He is not a dirty player and he is not admitting he's a dirty player. His attitude is the same as any other defender: "You come into my territory and you're going to get hit." He SPECIFICALLY said he is not out to injure anybody and if you can't understand what he means by "hurt" then shame on you.

I'm very curious about one thing. Each year we are starting to hear more and more about helmet-to-helmet contact and the risks of concussions. Not once have I heard anyone in the league talk about the majority of players that don't like to wear neckbraces (which wouldn't stop but could significantly limit how often a players head is snapped back). Yes they may be uncomfortable and may make players feel restricted but I'm amazed they discuss fines and suspensions, how equipment can be improved, and yet they don't mention how limited the use of neckbraces are around the league.

What do you guys think? If this is so critical and health is an issue should this at least be in the conversation?

Larry Fitz is the only one I can think of that is....minus those that have retired and moved onto analysts positions, i.e. Faulk.

Peyton....Carson....actually Mendenhall is very well spoken. They are very few; probably less than 10%.

Always said that accident was more the fault of the deceased than Stallworths.

Who roams around a highway in the middle of the night?! Anyways, that's neither here nor there, totally different subject.

But, yeah, Donte speaks like an English professor.

Let me ask you something. In Baseball players get hit by a ball and it's a automatic walk. I bring this up because well some players are "good actors" and can make the umpire think they got hit so they can walk and help their team get a advantage. Now I bring that up because well the same is said in NFL, Kickers can act well enough to make the refs think they got hit thus forcing a roughing the Kicker penalty.

Why is it that I can see the same thing happening here, now that players know that not only will this be flagged, fines and suspensions but they also know that they get extra yards to get better field position. Whose to stop a receiver who is about to get hit in the shoulder to say move his body in a way where he forces helmet to helmet contact making it think the defensive player leaned with his helmet to hit him. Now the NFL has just opened up that flood gate and I would expect that players will take advantage of it to gain the extra yards to get better field position or to keep a drive alive.

Here's a good read.

I guess if you don't have a facemask, you'd be a little more cautious of where your helmets are.

After reading that, I changed my vote. :P

I'd heard that before, but I didn't know Jo Pa was the author of the quote. At first it sounds like a great idea, but I think hands to the face would take on a whole knew meaning. lol

Can you imagine a mans face after a collision with another guys helmet?

You'd have Jon. One is enough.

I didn't vote. This is a hard one and tricky. Who is determining the "intent" here? No matter what they say I think anyone has a certain bias in terms of teams and/or players.

I am all for player safety. The referees though have proven that they cannot manage to be consistent in calling anything, even something as simple as an offensive hold. They already (IMO) have too much power over the outcome of a game with PI calls that they routinely screw up. Pushing them to eject players, wow. Imagine how this will effect a game's outcome and what happens when they've screwed up? Perhaps refs should get suspended when they make a bad call that clearly changes the momentum in a game hey?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Ray Ray or Bradie James or Channing Crowder have been knocked out cold. The only time I saw I've seen a defender take a shot while "defenseless" is when Hines Ward broke Keith Rivers jaw.

Limas Sweed hitting Corey Ivy comes to mind, too.. And where are they both, now?

Sorry, but you're both wrong. The blocking rule is completely different. BEFORE they changed the rule (after Ward's block) merely stated that the block not come from behind the person being blocked. Hines Ward came from River's left front and Sweed hit Ivy head on.

Case-in-point, a classic example of a devastating, but legal block by your own Ray Lewis:

That was a clean shoulder to shoulder block from 10 years ago, he could have gone helmet to helmet but that would have costs us the TD and probably caused some brain damage to the gunner.

It absolutely was clean. No different from Hines or Sapp on Clinton.

Shoulder to chest is a far cry from helmet to facemask. It's called the Hines Ward rule, not the Ray Lewis rule.
