Whether it's a shot at the NFL or not, Harrison is coming off as a crybaby with his comments since the fine. There was no suspension, and the fine is chump change to him. I can understand him being upset with not being able to play the way he likes, but let's face it, there's over a hundred starting linebackers in the league, and they aren't all having the same "problem" as Harrison is. You can't tell me that they're all ineffective, because they're playing "within the rules".

Take the pacifier out of your mouth, put down your blankie, and play ball, Harrison. I do not care if you're taking a snide, passive-aggressive shot at the NFL or not. You're one of the most feared linebackers in the league, hard hits or not, act like it.
I don't think the league is being consistent in their enforcement of the rules. And they've seemingly redefined the rules to read "unnecessary hit regardless of intent." That is vague and complete BS.

Harrisons hits were withing the boundaries of the rules. Madden was on this morning with the NFL guys on Sirius and confirmed the details. Helmet-to-helmet is NOT illegal unless on a QB or a defenseless receiver. A defenseless receiver is defined as a the ball catcher not having the time to "protect himself." So now how many illegitimate "Strikes" does JH have on his record??? It's complete crap and I don't blame him for wishing he could do something equally ridiculous.

This whole thing is an un-thought-out reaction by the league front office. Goodell needs to go. I'm sick of all his negative impacts on the game.

He is just being a crybaby about his fine...

If his hits were within the boundaries of the rules he wouldn't of gotten fined 75K.

So you disagree with me that Jonathan Ogden was a great offensive lineman?

I'm not commenting on the hits from the Cleveland game, since I was not watching the game, so I'm really in no position to make an educated comment. Whether or not the hits were clean or dirty, legal or illegal, Harrison's comments just seem extremely childish in my opinion. While I understand (and agree to an extent) with how vague the official rule is and it's inconsistent nature, it's not an on-going problem (as of now) with linebackers and there's plenty of "effective" ones in the league. Which is where my displeasure with Harrison as of now lies. It's just very childish, in my opinion, to contemplate (or threaten?) retirement just because he's been fined (multiple times) and there's the possibility of suspension for "dangerous hits".

I agree it was a little dramatic, but I'm frustrated too and it's not me being pointed to with the statement, "what you did was wrong, illegal and dirty." I don't blame him much even if I do think he could have handled it better.

Give up, Wardy. You'll never convince us. You're on one side and we're on the other.

Well, I'm trying not to. Fortunately for me there are some pretty reasonable Ravens fans in here. In fact, I believe they out number the ignorant ones.

Here's my final say on this James Harrison retiring mess...

When players are thinking about retirement due to the rules of the NFL and how much of a pansy league this has become... something is wrong. That shows Goodell isn't doing something right.

Now quite frankly we can be lucky and if the League still favors the Steelers like in the past just maybe this is what we needed to change some of these stupid rules and bring back true football.... On second thought, Tom Brady is against a 18 game schedule and the league isn't backing down from that so maybe the Steelers don't have the push like they use to.... but one can only hope right.

Jeez will you get over it? you guys get cut enough slack as it is. You have former nfl safeties and a WR breaking it down on NFL network and they all came to the same conclusion according to the rulebook.

You say Harrison fell over, yet he somehow he started as low as Massaquoi and flew upwards through the air like superman.

Souljah boy tell em.

I think what we are learning here today is that Warden* is more knowledgeable about the rules of the NFL than countless NFL analysts and former NFL players, all whom say the hit was dirty.

* - Pittsburgh fan, I'm sure it has nothing to do with his stance though.

The majority of those are on the same side of the argument as I am. Do you have an argument or are you just trying to pick a fight? If you have an argument, then back it up! I'm sure my allegiance has nothing to do with your useless remark.

This has nothing to do with him being a Steelers fan, it has nothing to do with us being Ravens fans and it certainly doesn't have anything to do with who you root for in the NFL. Warden is standing up for the game of Football and how it is SUPPOSED to be played, take off the purple shades and realize that is what he is doing, and I am also standing up for it because I want true football back just like he does.

Ok certainly I will agree that he doesn't know more than Analysts and former players in fact nobody on this board would know more than analysts and former football players. Just think about this... do you really think players and analysts are going to say what they really think... NO they hide behind being "politically correct" and not wanting to offend the league. I watched and listened to these "analysts" and former players sit there and make up "politically correct" excuses of why Calvin Johnson didn't have a TD against the Bears, and now those same "analyst" and former players now have to be politically correct when it comes to this issue as well and I can tell you that probably most analyst and former players feel a different way but they can't say how they really feel because of having to be "politically correct."

I'd just like to add, that my argument would be the same if it was Ray Lewis, Ed Reed or Terrell Suggs. In fact, I DID condemn the refs for the bogus calls on both Ray and Suggs a few weeks ago.

I actually think for once the guys at NFL.com made perfect sense with their assessment of the debate on player safety. They pointed out that the proper approach right now is to clarify the rules regarding legal or illegal hits and to enforce those rules on a consistent basis. We all know that you can't eliminate collisions in a collision sport without changing the nature of the game and thus essentially making it flag football. I agree that severe fines are not the answer for this as well. Teach the general public and the players which hits are desired and which ones are not, then blatant helmet to helmet hits like the Merriweather one will fade away, just like facemasks, hooking and all those other things the Raiders' secondary excelled at in the 70's and 80's got fewer over the past decades.

Edit.....is that hit in my sig legal?

I believe it falls under the defenseless receiver clause, so no. There are like nine different levels/definitions of "Defenseless Receiver."
