wow, that was it hard to find it in the internet?

And no, Germany is north west of Austria

No actually, I am taking a German history course right now. When you go to school you learn new things. I could probably tell you all about the Austrian Empire, thank you very much.

But we were only part of the German empire when we were the biggest empire of the world and from 1938 till the end of WW two.

You guys being apart of the Confederation of the Rhine (Germany) ended with the Austro-Prussian war, that was around 1885 give or take a few years. And you guys being "kicked", for lack of a better term, out of it had a lot to do with the unification of Germany. The class began with the Holy Roman Empire and we are ending the semester talking about Hitler in world war II. So, the Austrian Empire had alot to do with the time period we have talked about.

Let's see...

Born and raised in Covington, Virginia near Roanoke, Virginia (better than Florida)

Moved to Atlanta, Georgia (better than Florida)

Now live in Millersville near Lancaster, Pennsylvania (not better than Florida)

I've never been to Sweden, Norway, Wales, or France, but my ancestors hail from Austria and Germany way back in the 1750s. Since then, there has been some Native American tribes tossed in for good measure (mostly Cherokee), as well as some Dutch (which I ignore for personal reasons).

sounds a bit like me lol (without all the moving around, i've lived in the same area for, it'll be 19 years on saturday May 17th, my B day.) i do however have Cherokee in me and i recently found out that im related to one of the knights of the Round table, im related to Daniel Boone's Sister or cousin (cant remember which) but that makes me, if its his sister related to him as well, And im realated to that Famous Civil War General Samuel " StoneWall" Jackson.

i also know the olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (no relation) because his dad (Fred Phelps) and my dad were Police buddies and still remain good buddies.

I don't know of any famous ancestors, but I read recently that most people alive today are descended from someone famous or another - simply because of the infant mortality rates in years past and the comparably better health care of the well-to-do. It's just a question of how far you go back and how reliable the records are.

The article pointed out, for example, that a ridiculously large number of people (we are talking millions) are direct descendants of the Plantagenets who ruled England.

I believe that. Alot of the former monarchs in Europe had loads and loads of illegitimate children. I bet half of England's population are related to the royal family, in some way.

I went to Covington High School - class of 87.

I haven't been back in a couple years. Just about all my friends are gone. With the economy there, I wasn't really all that surprised - but it's still depressing. It's a shame, because it's a beautiful area. I didn't know that then, but after moving around a bit, I know it now.

people tend to realize the simple beauty in areas you thought were bland or plain, when you were younger. Its just how people go about their lives from day to day, one day your a little kid thinking that the area is crap and nothing there, the next minute, your grown and really appreciate the value it truly did indeed have but failed to recognize/see it before until now.

Yeah, it's still decaying. I've only been out of high school for 2 years and it's already gotten visibly worse since I graduated. Nobody who leaves after graduation to pick up skills elsewhere comes back, so it's bleeding out. I'm already running out of friends in the area, and I don't plan to come back myself when I'm done with college.

It is a really beautiful place though. I appreciate that whenever I go home.

What angers me - well, disappoints might be more accurate - is that the local governments have had chances to turn it around in the past, but they made wrong decisions every time. Whether it's because they were too closely tied to Westvaco or simply resistant to change is almost beside the point these days. I think they have passed the point of no return. The entire area is in an economic death spiral, and it would take a miracle to get out of it.

It's pretty sad when Wal-Mart is the only practical option people have for getting a job - because Westvaco/Mead certainly isn't hiring much these days.

Eventually, I'm going to inherit my parents' house in Covington. At one time, I had hoped I could move back there and live out the rest of my days in the home where I grew up. But now, I'll probably just sell it and say goodbye.
