you must not have seen him on the field last year...he has lost nealry all of the speed/explosiveness that made him such a threat early in his career (well, that, and the roids).
That's a fair point since he didn't live up to past performances, but it could also be a result of circumstances with injuries and schemes. Look at two former Charger players like Drew Brees and LT. The Chargers let Brees go in part because of concerns about his shoulder injury. But we've seen what Brees has done in a new offensive scheme that he created with Sean Payton, while getting solid protection from a good offensive line. Same with LT. He was injured and not producing and people called him "washed up" but look at him now as he's behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and producing right up there with his career high points.

The same could be in affect with Merriman. He'd play with one of the best NFL front sevens with a strong defensive line that can create gaps for pass rushers to execute through. San Diego doesn't have amazing defensive playmakers like the Ravens do, and it can all work accordingly as they'd play up each others strengths. I don't like to dismiss a player (and a young one at that) just because of recent injuries. He can still get past them if put in the right situation because his talents would play up right along with the rest of the defense.

Heard about this on the Tony Bruno show tonight. I would have been highly disappointed if someone hadn't started the "let's get Merriman" thread.

I see one flaw with the theory that he'll end up being a Jet.
He was never a Raven. :D

you're correct, many assumed that his lack of speed was due to coming off his surgery.
But being hurt again doesn't inspire any confidence that he'll ever regain his speed...missing two out of the last three years is an awful lot of football.
He's a very old 26, if you know what I mean...I not only have doubts about his ability to return to his former glory, but his longevity in the league as well...not to mention I'd cringe every time I see him on the field, hoping that he just makes out of the game intact..

But thats just me...will be interesting to see if the staff looks him over and see if they decide they have a role for him with us.

I agree that he doesn't at SD, but maybe he'd have more of a chance with our DL to succeed. Merriman was best when J. Williams and Castillo were performing in my opinion.

Suggs wasn't in form last year. We'll see how he goes this year.

My money is still on the Jets signing him.
He only has 2.5 sacks but he's back to being the explosive, occasional pressure-generating, all-around performer we know he can be.

Merriman is still playing football?
I know... I actually thought he was already released and was a Free Agent.

Nope, we will need that money to sign Ngata
Exactly! Between Ngata, Rice, Joe, Koch, all having contracts expiring soon, well Koch is coming up shortly we won't have the money considering Joe may be the first $100 Million Raven in Franchise History.

Joe still has 3 years left on his contract, including this season.
And if he put up Manning numbers between now and then, he still wouldn't be a $100M player.

CLEARLY, the steroids had an influence on the guy. As soon as he came back from his suspension, his impact wasn't nearly the same. He is an afterthought on that defense. I say our money is better invested elsewhere

If we could sign him to the veteran minimum why not? I wouldnt make a long term investment, but if hes healthy and can contribute immediately with low financial impact....

Who would you want to get rid of to make room for him? And don't forget that two players are already going to have to be moved around to make room for Reed and B.A. soon.

Exactly!!!

All this talk about "money for Ngata", yada yada yada...let's face it. We would sign him for mad cheap and just for the rest of the season. It would NOT be a long term deal right off the bat. And that goes for whatever team signs him. It's kind of like the same situation with Housh.

Maybe when we face a team that has Tila Taquila at QB we can bring in Merriman.
Nah, she'd knock the crap out of a steroid-less Merriman. She's a feisty one.

I think about it this way, the Chargers will release Merriman and have replaced him with Antwan Barnes. Therefore they must feel that Barnes is an upgrade, and I agree. Therefore since we didn't bring Barnes back (who is better at this point than Merriman), we are not bringing in Merriman, nor should we. The only linebacker I wouldn't mind parting ways with anyway is Gooden and he plays inside.

On another note, I am surprised that the Jets didn't sign Barnes, especially after they were rumored to sign Adalius Thomas and that didn't happen.

The first photo was actually doctored. The body in the first picture is Jamal Williams'. That's Shawne's real neck though.

Yeah it didn't look to be the same realistically. The tattoo isn't on the first picture either. Unless that is a new tattoo or something.

It's a relatively new tattoo. He got it at some point after his rookie year.

Ahhh really?! That's disappointing, that was pretty good evidence if real. Almost too good to be true. But let's just call it an exaggeration, it still illustrates the point that he is over the hill because he's not on roids anymore. DAMN YOU FLORIO!!

As a fellow Alum, I would love to see Merriman here in MD w/ the Ravens, alla Wilson and Fox.
However, he would have to show he was totally fit, that he could do the skill set to play his position and be able to add something to the team.
He's locked up on IR for 6 weeks, so that puts him at wk 13 at earliest he can possibly play for a team;
he's going to be cut, which makes him an FA, so I seriously can't see him getting a big contract for 4 games at minimum;
if we had to cut someone, I'd say right now it would be a CB; by week 14, who knows what the health situation of the Ravens may be.
Even if he came to the Ravens, I can't see him as a strter unless someone got injured.

I just think its truly sad to say someone is washed up at the age of 26!!!!
