I'm Moving To Maryland...

13 posts in this topic

In March of next year I am officially moving to Maryland (Westminster). I am excited. This means I will finally to attend Ravens home games.

I have been to Maryland once before when I was about 14, so I don't recall much.

My question to you whom live in Maryland, what is there to do out there? Do you recommend any sites to go check out?

Thank you for your time and I am once again excited.

I'm a city boy so I don't know much about Westminster.
I do know that two years ago I was in a terrible car crash in Westminster, and I hate going there, but that's just my opinion.
It's fairly rural, if you like to do outdoors stuff, so that's good.
Westminster also gets it's share of bad weather, more so than Baltimore. You'll see more inches of snow, and more tornadoes (rare) than Bmore.
There are a lot of small towns in Westminster, if you like that sort of thing, which I kinda do, maybe because I'm from the city.
You'll most likely be 30 or so minutes from the city of Baltimore, so maybe check out some sites and plan a weekend.
Although, the best thing is, if you can get tickets, you will not be far from being able to go to the Ravens games, and you'll be really close to training camp.
Sorry to not be much more help about Westminster, I just don't think there is much to do out there, but that's just my opinion.
Either way have a safe move and welcome to Maryland!

There is alot to do in Maryland and surrounding areas. I don't know what you are in to,but Baltimore has a decent night life as well as great sights to see and check out in and out of the city. DC is obviously not that far of a drive and alot more to do there as for sights and what not. Good thing about living here is you are not really that far from ALOT, ocean is pretty close got a few big cities not far out and if you want big city NYC is a few hours away. Best thing of course is the Ravens and being able to either watch em on tv or catch them live. Oh and it's quite easier to get a ticket to an O's game if that's your thing as well. But might want to jump on that fast as I think they might be on the turn around and the fair weathered O's fans will be back out at the yard! Have a safe move and welcome!

Historical sites: From Westminster, you'll be an hour or less from the two most politically significant battlefields of the Civil War: Antietam & Gettysburg. Downtown Baltimore was the location of the first casualties of the Civil War, and the War of 1812's Battle of Baltimore (North Point, Hampstead Hill, and Fort McHenry). Annapolis was a seat of the Continental Congress, the US Capital for a year, and site of the burning of the ship Peggy Stewart. That's the better part of a year's worth of sightseeing, but, if you need more: Harper's Ferry, Shenandoah Valley, dozens of Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields in Virginia and Pennsylvania, DC's monuments, Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Recreation: From Westminster, you would be under an hour from Cunningham Falls State Park for hiking and camping, and from Ski Liberty or Ski Roundtop for snow skiing. You would also be under an hour from the Chesapeake Bay for boating, fishing, crabbing, water skiing.

Indoors, there are scores of museums and other attractions in Baltimore, including the Maryland Science Center, the National Aquarium, Walters Art Gallery and don't miss the Sports Legends Museum of Maryland sports history, in the former B&O station next to the warehouse at Camden Yards. Many more museums are located in Philly & DC.

Westminster proper is relatively well maintained and active, despite losing so much business to the shopping areas along bypass route 140. Westminster is similar to Bel Air, Columbia, and Annapolis in one respect: it is self sufficient for shopping and entertainment, without big city crime & congestion, but it's within a 1/2 drive of Baltimore. Of course, Westminster really comes alive every July for Ravens training camp.

If you're an outdoor type, Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park--two places I hang out in when I've got the gas money (CFSP already mentioned....but I'm a parkie so I'll mention the National Park Service unit too....just be careful not to wander into the outer borders of Camp David).

Gettysburg and Antietam already mentioned....if you want a know-it-all tour of Gettysburg, let me know :D I know that battlefield almost as well as I do the back of my hand.

Dude your're like a hop skip and a jump away from both B-More and DC. Plenty of stuff to do. You could go watch Wizards or Caps games at Verizon (or catch any of the shows down there), you could go to the inner harbor in Baltimore, catch an O's games, millions of rests.

Not much in Westminster though. Just a small college town. You will be lucky next season come training camp. You could go every day!

i grew up not too far from westminster... got my license at the MVA there. :)

there's definitely things to do in and around the area

ravens training camp is at McDaniel which is in the vicinity, and you';ll definitely want to go to Baltimore, it's a fun place but its nice to not actually live in the city at times. there's a bit of hiking/skiing stuff in western MD which someone else mentioned. you're not too far from PA or WV so gambling in charleston and/or hershey park are some exciting things to do.

within westminster it depends if you want more family things or not. there's a golf course (and mini golf) called Tom Mitchell's that i think is near westminster

I have lived in Westminster(westmonster) almost my entire life. Westminster itself is kinda generic not a whole bunch to do right in town. But as others have said your close to a lot of interesting historical landmarks and such. Its about 3 hours to the beach 3 hours to Deep Creek Lake. Hershey Park is an amusement park about 90 minutes away depending on PA traffic.

There are plenty of Ravens fans that live here. Training camp is a must for any Raven fan in the area. On Sundays during the season if your aren't out and about in purple and black you are in the minority. If your interested in watching the game at a sports bar The Greene Turtle and Buffalo Wild Wings are your best choices. They get loud when the team is playing well. We are very passionate about football.

Hope this helps. What part of Westminster are you moving to?

Ocean City in the summer. New York (4-hour drive) whenever you want to take a break from this city. The aquarium is fairly entertaining and there are plenty of museums if you're into that. Washington, DC is not that far. Towson mall is a nice one and the Noodle Factory (or whatever it's called) in downtown is the best place to eat IMO. If you're really bored [s]and want to see a team loss[/s] you can always go to an Orioles game. The Mormon temple in Kensington has amusing Christmas lights in the winter.
Also, the Ravens training camp is in Westminster during the summer. You can go see them.

The Inner Harbor is pretty awesome! We have been there a few times and we always have a lot of fun.
