[Blogs] ‘No Way’ Ravens Can Sign Barnes

27 posts in this topic

The Ravens would like to get more from their pass rush, as they are currently tied for 21st in the NFL with only eight sacks in five games.

But that doesn’t mean the Ravens will bring pass-rush specialist Antwan Barnes back after he was released on Saturday by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said the Ravens are not planning on signing the former fourth-round draft pick any time soon.

“I haven’t had a conversation with him,” Harbaugh said in his Monday press conference.  “We don’t really have a roster opportunity right now for that, [but] I wouldn’t be opposed to it. Antwan’s a good person, a good player, and obviously he’s done some good things here.

“But right now, there’s just no way, roster-wise, we could pull that off.”

The Ravens made a surprising trade with the Eagles when they were making final roster cuts, getting a conditional draft pick for a player who contributed five sacks and 23 special teams tackles over three seasons in purple and black.

Barnes was inactive during Weeks 3 and 4, but was previously being used as the first-team defensive end in sub packages.

The former Florida International standout posted only three total tackles for the Eagles.

Baltimore’s pass rush has been getting solid pressure, but the sacks have not come.  Defensive end Cory Redding had the Ravens’ only sack of Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton last weekend.

I don't get why we keep scrubs like Lamar Divens on the team when we have a good player in Barnes waiting to be signed...

I dont get why we let go of players who have good upside. Barnes would be a better special team player then Phillip Burgess and Jones. Must be the things in practice that we dont get to see like not reading his assignments. Still when hes gottn time to play he makes plays and it shows.

in response to edreedftw burgess has made some huge special teams plays, as has jason phillips - however id really like to see his make some room for this guy as we all know how good of a pass rusher he is, it's just tough with such a talented team... id say re-cut ken hamlin but he's played pretty well on special teams the last couple games.... who knows but id like to see him back sometime

Gaither is holding an extra roster spot. The season is almost at the half way point and gaither is still having "back issues". So why not put him on IR list since our oline is producing nicely without him and let barnes get the roster spot. But even then someone will have to sit to get barnes in the game. Maybe this is harder than it seems.

i thought about this too. but i would like someone who has full game film or someone who can muster up the stats. during the broncos game the announcers said that ravens opponents have committed more penalties playing baltimore than any other team in the nfl. so basically people are holding and what not because we are beating them 1 vs 1. some people may remember vs the broncos that ray lewis alone would have had 2 sacks for sure but was held both times. id like to know how many of the penalties have been holding calls on our pass rush. i think we would have more sacks but our players are getting held. and the interceptions are a matter of guys just catching balls. washington and wilson dropped at least one pick each. i dont mind the turnover and sack issue at the moment. but it does need to come around eventually or it will come back to bite us. i say once reed gets back the interceptions will come and so will a better pass rush because our secondary will be that much better

Well I think we have more than enough defensive tackles. There's no way that Divens and Jones are a better use of roster spots than a defensive end. Everyone was just saying how think we are a defensive end without Pryce and Kruger for a few weeks. I don't understand how we "don't have the roster opportunity" for this, but whatever. We're in first place, so I won't start doubting now.

If we are cutting people to bring people on almost every week, what made you guys think that we had a roster spot for Barnes. Coach isn't going to cut any producing player to bring back someone we ALREADY TRADED.

Try and enjoy the season, and trust our organization instead of complaining about everything the Front Office and/or the coaching staff is doing.

I don't understand some of you people.

liked Barnes while he was here but 5 sacks in three seasons is horrible for someone that calls himself a pass rush specialist.

the sacks will pick up when P.Kruger comes back and Cody gets more time b/c I don't think anyone can block Cody and Ngata one on one. so that means doubles on them and Suggs and Redding can get busy.

Cody is a run-blocking tackle. Not to mention he's a rookie. How exactly would he affect the sack count?

did u not see how effective barnes was at the end of last year even the playoff game vs the patriots. i think hes a good compliment to suggs in pass rushing situatios. im happy with our defense so far this year, but if we want to get more sacks you need two dominant pass rushers or opposing sides like woodley harrison, mathis freeney, allen edwards, the giants de's.... they are teams that constintly hit the qb yr n and out. im not complaning lm just saying.

I am upset to say this, but I told you harbs won't be able to find a roster spot for him; and it would be a bit naughty to ask him to come back on the practice squad

@50barnes#1fan- True but Jarret Johnson is the starting left pass rusher. And I suppose they must like what Edgar Jones and Prescott Burgess is doing if they maintaining them over retrieving Barnes. I like Barnes but he wasn't a starting pass rusher and the rotation would be kinda jacked up if we were to resign him...

Wow. Not a Ravens fan?

We traded Burgess to the Pats last season. Then after they released him, we picked him back up.

C'mon son.
