Browns Considering The Rookie To Start

55 posts in this topic

With Delhomme and Wallace both nursing ankle sprains, the Browns are considering throwing their young QB McCoy to the lions on Sunday at Heinz Field. It seems a little cruel but who knows? Perhaps it is just what the Browns need.

The Browns just added Brett Ratliff.

HE will probably start against the Steelers. Sending Colt in will turn him into Tim Couch, IMO.

Further proof that no one in that organization has a clue. If he does start I predict it will be worse than Jimmy Clausen's performance on Sunday.

I'd start him. Give him a taste of the NFL and let him to show if he has potential. Next year's QB class looks to be pretty strong and the Browns need to know whether McCoy is someone they can build a team around.

I tend to agree that Pittsburgh would make his debut something to remember, and not in a good way. Still, your own link suggests that Ratliff is to back-up McCoy. Guess we will see on Sunday. I think it should be interesting either way. Ratliff doesn't have a boatload of experience himself.

Starting McCoy against Pittsburgh??...... Not a good way to start your career.

Hes way too raw to face any NFL team, let alone arguably the best pass-rushing team in the NFL.

Agreed but the powers that be in Cleveland are not really known for their good decision making abilities.

Pitt will eat him alive.

It's kind of ironic that both teams will have qbs that haven't played a single down this year.

Indeed both statements are true. The only thing I find interesting is that a Undrafted Rookie QB had his 1st NFL Start before Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow had their first NFL Start.

If Mike Holmgren is smart, he would keep McCoy benched and let him develop this year, and next year have Colt battle for the starting job along side Jake and Seneca or another Vet QB to see if he can earn his starting job.

I predict a monumental bloodbath. And of course all the yinzers will be puffing their chests out claiming Ben is the second coming and the steel curtain is back. Man I hate them with a passion.

So I'm curious to those that feel McCoy should NOT start.. what really then should Cleveland do? I personally don't want him to start but at the moment we really don't have much of a choice. We brought in Ratliff because he knows our system but honestly if you are going to start Ratliff or McCoy I think the decision is pretty obvious who you choose. If we bring in a veteran QB that may work in a week but there's no way he'd be ready to go this week.

It's a crap situation and odds are we'll get schooled miserably but there's not much else that can be done about it.

The Browns should bring in some Brownies on the sideline to distract Big Ben.

Ugh, Why would you do this to McCoy? I'm gonna have to avoid the highlights of that game. They are going to murder him.

Because the Steelers feast on rookie QBs. I've always wondered if Boller would have developed had we not thrown him out there against the Steelers for his first (rookie, no less) start.

Granted, the Browns have a much better O-line then we did in those days so maybe McCoy won't get too beat up.

If I remember correctly, Kyle Boller's first game was against Pittsburgh and HE never recovered...

So again I will ask.. who exactly should we start? We have two options.. McCoy and Ratliff. I'm sorry but Ratliff is nothing better than a 3rd QB at best. If you have to start one of these two then there is absolutely no reason to NOT start McCoy. I agree that it's probably one of the worst possible teams (if not the worst) to throw a guy out to for his first NFL start but we don't have a choice.

Again.. I don't WANT McCoy to start and I personally wish it was avoidable but it is what it is. We drafted and invested in McCoy to see if he has an NFL future; not Ratliff. He is simply insurance.

And that sucks and I'm not keen on Ravens QB history but if that was an organizational choice that was made out of necessity then I understand it; if it was made to be made then I'd say it was probably a mistake.

Our situation unfortunately is different.

I'm surprised you guys didn't go after Troy Smith, who is the 3rd QB in San Francisco. He has "experience" and can move around well in the pocket.

No debate on this message board is exempt from Troy Smith apparently. :D

The way SF is playing right now who knows if they want to trade him? Again though even if we did trade for him or someone else there's no way he's starting this week or maybe even next week. May as well have two QBs on the roster that know the system and start the one you drafted as your potential future.

Hey you know all of us Ravens' fans are behind the rookie. Your O line is pretty solid so perhaps it won't be as bad as we all fear. Maybe, we just remember Boller and how he never did seem to come back from that "incident".

I hope the kid is amazing. Here's to him having the game of his life on Sunday :)

Anything is certainly possible; it will just be extremely tough. Unfortunately with our lack of overall talent we have to play an almost perfect football game to win. I don't expect a victory (hope for one however!) but I am hopeful we'll compete.

Billick's ludicrous system was Boller's problem, not his first game against Pitt......

I agree with Brownsfan, I don't think they have much choice. I hope for the Brownie's sake Hillis has a huge game.
