"goal Line Back"

41 posts in this topic

I have been thinking this through out the season, but today kind of solidified my opinion. First of all, I think Mcgahee is a good back but I don't like him at the goal line over ray rice. I feel like if ray rice is able to run, he should get the shot at the goal line. He has the best acceleration out of all of our backs and even though he isn't the biggest back we have, he is strong enough to get that extra yard or two.

Mcgahee got stuffed two plays in a row at the 1 on the first drive. Yeah, denver did a good job penetrating, but I feel like if he had a quicker burst he would of gotten that yard. Even mcclain got stuffed at the goal line. But, Ray rice scored the first time he got the carry. It just makes me mad when we get to the goal line and can't punch it in. I feel like scoring in the goal line, especially inside the 5 is as simple as running it with ray rice.

What is everyone elses thoughts?

Honestly, Ray or Lay'ron (seriously, when did he change the pronunciation of his name?) wouldn't of been able to punch it in on those runs. The Broncos goalline defense was a wall and they had one of our guards on the ground so Willis had to go around him.

However, I guess he could of tried jumping but I always get nervous about fumbling.

P.s. Why would you pass to Ngata on 4th and inches on the goalline? And why wouldn't you throw the ball away when you are about to get sacked?

Yeah and I understand we ran to the left with rice..instead of the right but this isn't the only game where mcgahee hasn't been able to punch it in at the goal line. I feel like rice is more capable of scoring at the goal line than mcgahee is

Ngata was open for a split second there. Wouldn't that have been a thing of beauty? Flacco to Ngata for 6? lol.

I have seen this COUNTLESS times from McGahee this year... goal line situations and he is dancing around in the back field... I would rather just give it to Rice if McGahee doesnt get it fixed, maybe he isnt as big as McGahee but he is just as tough and will move the ball forward through the small openings
I cant be the only one noticing this, sure its wasnt a big deal today because we absolutely destroyed the Broncos but in a tight game that could cost us the game
JUST RUN FORWARD! EVEN IF YOU RUN INTO THE BACK OF YOUR LINEMEN YOU WILL GET THE TD JUST MOVE THE BALL FORWARD

No, you're not the only that thinks this....not saying I do or don't agree, just saying there are already threads about this very topic.

Dude, I couldn't agree more. I have been complaining about this all year he needs to run north and south in short yardage situations.

Just give the ball to Rice on the goal line going forward. He's 2 for 2 on the season...

I love McGahee, but everytime the coaches put him in there on about the 5 or less, I feel like it'll be a quick 3 and out. Can't have that

It was 4th down and Joe was trying to make a play. The call was foolish anyway.

Not to mention he had about 17 guys in his face....tough to turn and throw it anywhere, including away.

He never changed the way his name is pronounced, that is the correct way to pronounce his name. It really came last season I believe when we played either the Broncos, Bears or Lions, one of the guys calling the game was saying (Lay'ron) and even I was like WTH. So the following Monday on the Bruce Cunningham show someone had mentioned it and Bruce was even like WTH, but Bruce was talking with (Lay'ron) and asked him about it and (Lay'ron) told him that is the way it is supposed to be pronounced, but he never really inforced it or nothing. Yeah just figured I would throw my two cents in on that, because I always thought it was Leron not (Lay'ron) as well.

My understanding was that it is not pronounced <lay ron>, but that he requested it be pronounced that way through his twitter as a joke.

Well he must of forgot what he told Bruce last season then if that's the case lol. I don't know but when I heard it last season I was like WTH, and then listening to Bruce I heard that little tid bit about the whole name thing. So who really knows then. Oh well I'll call him whatever he wants as long as he helps bring another Lombardi back to Baltimore!
The stats suggest McGahee is a more effective goalline back, as he has a higher strike rate percentage.
What about this season though? Because mcgahee has gotten a lot of opportunities at the goal line and has only scored twice, while rice was given the opportunity twice today, and both times he was an instant td

Down the stretch, McGahee (or LayRon) will be punching it in on GL situations, trust me. Save Rice for what he does best.

Four games is still a small sample size, we'll have a better picture near the end of the season.

Wait wait wait! Where was this absurd shenanigans last year when Willis was a goal-line TD Machine? You know? Those times where Ray had chances to get the ball in the endzone, but he was curled up before even getting to the line of scrimmage? Don't fall into the hype. We have 3 awesome goal-line options. Let's not limit ourselves to just one.

Ray - Check
Willis - Check
Le'Ron - Check

Let's go.

He has one off game and now Rice should just take over goal line duties?

Willis will be fine. He is and will always have that job and do well at it.

Ray has never really gotten a chance to take it in the goal line. Mcgahee did a good job last year but the point is that rice is more than capable of doing it this year.

Mcgahee is a great spell back and if we get to the goal line and rice is all huffed out, then mcgahee would be the best option. But if not id give it to the lead back first

Rice may be capable this year but Mcgahee is the more consistent option. He had an off game today but most of the time at the goal he does typically really well. You could say give Rice more opportunities, but goal line duties will still for the most part be all Mcgahee work.

I have no clue if they were here last season or not, because I wasn't a member last season. But I have seen some crazy stuff from people so far this season. One guy complaining about the run, yeah the last two seasons have been GREAT with the run. This offense is KNOWN for pounding the rock, because we have never had a serious passing threat, no secret there. But you go with what works, and obviously the pass working great the first 3/4 series and then you got someone crying about Cam not strictly running lmao. Go with what works, and be happy we have a decent passing game we can switch to. Case in hand with Denver, great passing game and NO running game. We have both and they work great, if they can implement both and tweak it up a little more just imagine how they are going to be from the Bills game on. They got a 3 week window with a home game, bye week and home game. That right there is going to be crucial for our players in a great way! Got a good feeling about this season and have for a long time!
