Flacco Picking Up The Blitz

12 posts in this topic

I was watching NFL Matchup and they said Joe Flacco has been blitzed 64 times this season, a league high. Of those only 1 has ended up as a sack. And he has thrown 4 of his 5 total touchdowns against the blitz. I noticed that Flacco had done a lot better picking up the blitz this year, and our line has stepped up a bit to keep the sacks and pressure down. Those stats just really put it in perspective though. Nice to see him starting to do some veteran like things, and only looking for more improvements in the future.

And it's not just about Joe, it's about him having multiple targets to throw to this season.
In his last game winning TD against the Steelers, you'll notice Heap and Rice picked up the blitz.
It can happen from any position, but Flacco has been good against the blitz, for the most part as throwing TD's.
Just another step in his progress. And he is doing very well.

The pass protection against the Steelers looked really good too...He seems to be working through his progressions much better...Flacco and the O-line looked relaxed and poised against a Pittsburgh defense that is not shy about pressuring a QB. I agree...he's "doing very well."

Yeah I can't count how many times I have seen that last offensive play broken down. Heap coming across to the other side to block Polamalu. It truly helped make the play. AND BloodRaven, you're right about the upgraded receiving corps helping. They have and will continue to only enhance Joe's progression. I'm just a bit surprised he has made so much progress since last year. He's not holding onto the ball so long, able to move around a little more in the pocket, and finally getting the ball out for quick completions when needed (although too many are thrown for between a 2 yard loss and a 2 yard gain)

Same Story, Different QB. Most defenses in the NFL seem to blitz 2nd and 3rd year QBs a lot more in hopes of causing them to make more bad throws or something. Probably why the term "sophomore slump" exists. Flacco came back and had two pretty good games after his 4 INT game though.

If any QB's stats are looked at, their 2nd and 3rd years starting are usually the most amount of sacks they've had. If the QB is a first round pick, they'll probably get blitzed a lot during their rookie season too. Aaron Rodgers got sacked like 50 times last year and it was his second year starting.

LMAO!

If I was to look up the stats of almost any QB that is currently playing, their 2nd or 3rd year starting (in most cases both are probably equally high) are usually always going to be their highest sack total of their career. That is basically what I was saying.

Back to topic, I'm really happy about Joe's progression and maturation. He really steps up and plays smart football. Can't wait to see how he handles the Broncos blitz and secondary defense.

Joe Flacco 260yds, 3td
Rice 100yrds, 1td

Flacco has been doing well against 3-4 defenses all season. Here are his numbers so far this year, pretty much minus the Bengals game(4-3 team)

Flacco's numbers against 3-4 defenses this season. 66/106 766yds 4TD 2Int 70%(competion[/b]), 51%(3rd downs)11.3ypp, (9)20+ plays, (1)40+ play, 3 sacks

Those numbers are really good, especially the 70% completion and 51% 3rd down conversion. Minus the Bengals game, which was as much on the WRs as Flacco imo, but other then that game, Flacco has been playing well.

The offense is still leaving plays out on the field, but these numbers will only get better as the season goes on. Imo we won't see too many defense the caliber of a Jets or Steelers.

The Broncos play a 3-4, and that don't get good pressure on the QB. I look for Flacco to have a huge game today.

Yeah that's definitely true. And I'm not sure who the guys that have been blitzed next most are. But I would think guys would blitz a young guy that doesn't have the weapons Flacco has. IDK Josh Freeman maybe? Maybe the other factor is us not having our former LT in there, and they think they can get some pressure. Or get Oher to false start, which works a good bit :th_shame:
