Game Day Idea

On Game Day, instead of overloading the server with constant refreshing of the "Weekly Game Thread" threads; how about setting up a chatroom? What would be the 'cons'?

My guess would be moderating workload and server space to run the room. I've visited chat rooms on official websites of other NFL teams. The language (profanity/vulgarity) and personal attacks quickly get out of control.

It's something we've discussed on-and-off for the last two years, and there's a chance we could see it happen in the future if demand is high enough (which I imagine it'd be) and if the filters and Moderation tools were good enough.

The only problem would be the human element in Moderation; there just isn't enough of us available on gameday to monitor everything that's said and keep up with the game. That said, it's still something I'm pushing for, even if it means I have to sit at my laptop almost every game day. ;)

There always seems to be a moderator around on game-day, but that is just what I see. (Point taken)

As for the profanity/vulgarity; would it be possible to install filters for that? Also, how about making it a forums member only type chat -- and put a 30-day account life minimum on it to prevent the fans of opposing teams from trying to start trouble with Ravens fans & vice-versa?

Maybe you get get a non-football fan to moderate it: that way, he/she wouldn't mind missing the game and could focus on deleting f-bombs.

Come to think of it, most websites have censor-software. For example, if you say **** on a college board site, it'll be automatically cut out. Good idea bringing this idea up, MalkavianRaven.

Keep in mind, it's not just profanity we'd need to filter; there's also personal attacks and veiled profanity (for instance, using symbols to substitute a profanity), among other things.

Moderation is only a tiny part of the issue, you have bandwidth, server and legal issues too.
If you host a chatroom on your website, you run the risk of potential liability if others post obscenity, libelous remarks, material taken without permission, links to sites that allow illegal free downloads of commercial software even with a user agreement.
It is hard enough to get people to read the Code of Conduct they agree to to post here let alone keep it clean in a chat room. We have users as young as 13 on this site. so that also has to be kept in mind --as it is we usually get 1 or 2 a game that get a time out because of streaming links, profanity and generally not playing well with others.

Heh, maybe you should talk to a moderator from another team site: I bet you could get good tips. BTW, what do you think of the above suggestion?

It's more than just a moderation issue (as Moderator 2 explained).

Thanks for the insight, ladies & gents.

I guess I'll sit back & wait to see if it does come to fruition, and should it - I'd be happy to help out with it.
