You Number Crunchers, I Need Some Validity

One of my good friends is ALWAYS harping on how Rice always runs out of bounds and that he needs to man up! WHAT?!

I know as you guys, that this is b.s. He was like 3rd best in the NFL overall last year.

Unfortunately he is injured and having a tough year.
But what the heck?!

First of all, most of the time I watch him, he is running outside to one side, and then cuts back to the other side of the field for a first down.
Second, he runs OoB SOMETIMES, because as you we can see, he's a small dude lol, he can only take but so many big hits.

Trying to figure out what you're asking here....not much number crunching to be done with this one.

What numbers are there to crunch?

The only time I remember him running OB on purpose was in that playoff game against Indy. After he fumbled, he had a 15-20 yard gain and said "I'm holding on to this one".

Perhaps he wants us to go back to every play Rice has ever ran the ball and tell him a percentage of how many times he's ran out of bounds.

That's just crazy talk!

Well, that's all he had to say. The answer is pi.

It seems the NFL has a stat on just about everything. I was just wondering if there was a yards after contact or something. That would prove he usually invites tackles and continues forward and not just running out of bounds all the time.

Here is a great graphical explanation, Ray ranked 8th (barely behind J-Stew) with YAC in 2010. But it does suggest that his percentage is not that good.

Yet, above Mendenhall! Which my friend, a Steelers fan, has said is a tougher runner.

Nice, and THANKS A LOT!!!

But Mendenhall YAC was greater in terms of percentage of his overall rushing yards over Rice.

So Rice had more yardage but Mendenhall had a greater proportion to total yards.

Your friend is full of shiz. You dont average 5.6 yards a carry (last year) by ducking out of bounds at the first sign of contact. Doesnt take a genius to figure that out.Even if he did, so what? Rice is an undispute top 4 running back. If thats all your friend can come up with to knock rice, just point at him and laugh.

You guys need to learn how to read graphs.....

The graph shows that Rice had one of the worst % of yards after contac. Sure, he has more yards, but its not saying much. CJ's YAC is low because a whole lot of his yardage was gained by his pure speed. Rice, not the case

Did you not read where Pu says 8th best in yards but not in percentage?

So, you're saying Rice is slow?

A little off topic, I'm trying to determine what's wrong with our Pro Bowl RB this year. After thinking about it, I always come to the conclusion that we've been facing some stiff run defenses, and Gaither being out with Cam's style of play has shown a decrease in Rice's overrall production. But as the schedule gets easier, hopefully Rice will be a threat every time he touches the ball, much like last year.

His Fantasy Football owners are waiting patiently lol...

Not the ones I know, fantasy owners can be very impatient. I've got some in my leagues that are calling for his head!

Hahaha.. he needs to step it up, we don't mess around! I've seen broken relationships between FF players and owners. Something nobody should go through...

Yeah, I was reading some of the comments on CBS and it's pathetic how worked up people get because a player isn't producing.

I have rice on my FF team and im not too worried. He didn't get too many lanes in week 1 cause it was the jets.In week 2, just when he seemed to be getting in a grove cam decided to go pass happy. He was doing work against cleveland and i kind of freaked when he didn't play almost the whole 4th, but then I heard about the knee contussion right after the game. Against Pitt, harbaugh was being cautious and he didn't get too many carries and their run d is the best in the league so he wasn't able to do much with his 8 carries. BUT..i have a feeling hes going to have his first 100 yard game for the season this week, maybe even a td or two.

Now for the topic...just remind your friend to count how many tackles he broke on that 4th down play last season in the second game against them

All our backs are struggling with ypc, personally I think it comes down to Gaither not playing.
[/quote]
YPC has been up and down for Rice We saw him do just fine against the Bengals defense but went down to 2.5 this week after his knee injury. So I obviously see inconsistency.

But in Cincy, against that tough defense, he had 16 carries for 87 yards which is just under 4.5 ypc.

His rough start to the season can be put on the O line for not doing a very good job in creating gaps, but also, Rice just hasn't looked comfortable in any game we've played so far this year. He's been less powerful and less quick outta the backfield.

He just seems scared out there, which is the last thing you'd expect from a Raven, especially after what he did last season.

Why would you have started Rice last week???

I have Rice in at least one of my fantasy football leagues, I benched him and picked up another running back from FA. And actually, it ended up being McGahee LOL

Maybe because Ray opens his eyes really widely? If that's the case, he's never seen Rice play before.

Ray Rice was definitely not scared.

Ray Rice is supremely confident. I'm sure he's talking down his groceries at Superfresh, too

He runs out of bounds a bit, but he gets the first down when he can. It keeps him from getting too banged up and keeps the ball in his hands.
And Rice has really excelled in draws/counters. We just have not seen that much of either so far this year. But now that our passing game in clicking, we'll be able to catch defenses off guard with the draw more. And it'll be far better in the shotgun, Flacco has been spending a lot more time in the shotgun.
